This manual reflects PartnershipProjects advanced level training in NVR. The principles and methods that are introduced in this training module have been specifically developed for helping parents or other caregivers who have experienced trauma, or who are looking after children who have experienced trauma. However, we have found over time that they have wide application and can be useful in working with NVR regardless of the severity of the problem, or whether or not family members have experienced serious trauma. The manual is divided into three parts. Each section represents one aspect of the adapted model of • Part I elaborates on how you can use the methodology of NVR to create a safer family environment for the recovery from trauma, by facilitating change processes in the larger system around the family that enable other adults to become safe supporters. • Part II introduces you to the use of NVR as a trauma-focused approach for parents and other caregivers, helping them move from trauma, secondary trauma or, in a wider sense what we call erasure, to a state of mind we call the presence mind, and which is functional both for resisting harmful behaviour and for caring for the child. • Part III finally, illustrates how you can practice child-focused NVR which can be especially helpful for children and young people who have had early histories of abuse or hardship.
