Pugtato: Let's Be Best Spuddies Reviews

  • Briar's Reviews

If this isn't the best title I've seen in 2021, I don't know what is!

Sophie Corrigan's adorable book book series has another addition (and man was I excited!). Pugtato is the weirdest yet coolest book I found and I'm digging every second of it.

We're introduced to Pugtato's interesting friends: like Cowbbage (that spelling is so weird, let's be honest) who loves to help him, Tomatoad who is the funkiest little red toad I ever did see, Croccoli who is the most interesting creature I've ever seen, and many more!

The illustrations and the whole concept is wildly amusing and I love. I honestly think this is a great picture book packed with comedy. I adore this series and will continue to support it and giggle and grin along with it. I also love that this book is all about friendship and fun. I highly recommend this book!

    Five out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Zonerkids-Books for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

This is another cute book about Pugtato and his... um... edible friends.

    I read
Pugtato Finds a Thing back in September and thought it was adorable. This book is just as cute. However, it's not really a story like the first one. In fact, except for the fact that this book is a bit of a spoiler for the first one, it actually works better as the first book in the series because it's basically just an introduction to all the characters. In this book, we see Pugtato's friends being friendly... but that's really all there is to it. It's sweet, but there's no real plot.

If you liked Pugtato Finds a Thing, be sure to check out Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies.

Thank you to NetGalley and Zonderkidz for providing a digital ARC.

This is the 2nd Pugtato book! Pugtato is a spunky little pug potato. In this book he visits all his various animal-veggie friends like croccoli and unicorn on the cob. This sweet rhyming tale is loaded with colorful whimsical illustrations of these creatures My little guy liked for me to linger on each page so he could take in the pictures. Its a quick little book that can easily be worked into even the most rushed of bedtimes. And maybe, just maybe, it will make your kids appreciate veggies.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

A cute story about friendship, and what makes good friends, with cute pictures that will have toddlers giggling as they enjoy "seeing" each of the "animals" and it would make a perfect book for garden-loving kiddos too.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

  • Jeanie

Another delightful adventure with Pugtato. It's a whole new outlook on vegetables for kiddos. Pugtato knows how to make friends no matter how different they may be. The illustrations will bring a smile to your young readers. It's fun to be a spud

A special thank you to ZonderKidz and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Omg this is the cutest children’s book I’ve read in awhile, partly because I’m a pug owner! We love Pugtato and his adventures so I was excited to receive this one. My kids enjoyed it! It was fun to read, the pictures are colorful, the friends all have cute names. Thank you to Zondervan, the author, and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.

  • Cover Lover Book Review

Last year I was first introduced to Pugtato in Pugtato Finds a Thing. And now, Pugtato, Let’s Be Best Spuddies is a new story featuring the cute little creature!

I love the fun play on words blending animals with vegetables. How unexpected and entertaining! (Cowbbage, CollieFlower, Unicorn on the Cob, and more.)

This adorable board book is fun and informative, teaching young readers things a best spuddie can do for others.

The illustrations are so cute and imaginative and demonstrates what true friends are.

The text is positive and upbeat, with sweetly silly rhyming text, and adorable illustrations. The characters are clever vegetable/animal hybrids (Pugtato, Tweetroot, Tomatoad, and others). The story follows Pugtato as he and his friends have fun, make music, and play.

With so many varied characters, the potential for silly read-along voices is stellar. There are lots of small details in the drawings providing lots of potential for hunt-and-find during storytime. Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies, is the newest book in the Pugtato series by Sophie Corrigan. The author uses silly rhymes and fun artwork to tell the story of Pugtato and his special garden of friends. This book will have your children (and you) laughing on every page, and coming back for more. All three of my children loved reading this book and have already asked if we can buy a copy for our own library.

*I received a complimentary copy of Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies through the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. My positive review is not required.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this! I can't stop laughing. This is my second pugtato book and it's just as good if not better. I adore the puns and the drawings are very cute. I think this would be a good way to talk about friendship with kids and just have a good time.

As a homeschool mom of four who feels strongly about the importance of reading with my children, I have read many, many picture books. So I would like to think that I know quality books. And this is definitely one.

The illustrations are superb. But they are also not overly complex. One of my four is quite artistic. I could have shown him a book like this when he was younger, and I think it would have inspired him to create his own similar illustrations. As a teacher, I am always looking to expand books into a new project.

The play on words are very clever. I could also see using this book in a classroom to be jumping point in helping beginning writers to understand the use of puns. Possibly they could create a similar book using fruit. (Bananas kind words have appeal!) The words are carefully chosen. As someone who has taught the "six traits of writing" to students many times, I think there could be a lot of creative projects that could come out of this book.

As for themes, this talks about all the ways that we can be a friend to people. Sometimes they need us to help them have fun. Sometimes we need them to listen. This could also open a lot of discussions with younger kids who sometimes have a hard time discussing their feelings.

The only downfall? This book is rather short. But for any mom who has tried to read a book to a squiggling toddler, I think this book is just right. I could see this book being requested many times as a bedtime read. As I was getting ready to post this review, I discovered that there a few additional titles in this series. I think it would be a fun collection to own.

Thank you to Zondervan and to Zondervan kids as well as NetGalley for letting me read this book. The cover caught my attention. I requested to read it. All opinions are my own.
Note: I did read this book in 2021, but I marked the date as 2020. I do not think a 12 page book should count toward my reading challenge. :-)

This is a short book about a potato pug named Pugtato. We meet all of Pugtato’s best spuddies. There is Collieflower, Croccoli, Purrsnip, Brussels snouts, and others. The author uses wordplay throughout. Kids will better understand the silliness with the illustrations. Not many young children know what parsnips and brussels sprouts are. The illustrations will put it together for them, especially the veggies with which they are familiar, such as Croccoli. There is definitely a bit of silliness to be found.

I personally enjoy it when authors play with words, Parents will enjoy the wordplay as much as their kids. The book doesn’t really have an interesting plot beyond meeting Pugtato and his friends. Language plays the lead role and silly illustrations are the sidekick.

If I you are a word person, this is a book you will love to add to your child’s bookshelf. If not, you may find this silly enough to spring for just for the fun of it.

I received an arc copy from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thanks to NetGalley and Zonderkidz-Books for the digital review copy!

Pugtato and his foodish buddies are back! This cute little book reads like the introductions after the band plays a song or two. We meet all of Pugtato’s friends and learn about what makes them such great friends!

This one is super short, so it’s perfect for evening storyime when dinner was late and bathtime was a struggle, and you can’t believe it’s already 9pm and the little ones are still awake but demand a story before falling asleep. The art is super cute (as usual), and there’s plenty of opportunity to identify different animals and foods, so if you’ve got a little more time, you can take a few minutes to have your kiddo identify Pugtato’s friends as both animals and foods.

This one’s not out until March, but keep it on your radar, especially if you enjoyed the first Pugtato picture book.

  • Storywraps

This is a delightful board book that kids will get a kick out of. Pugtato and his buddies (a.k.a. spuddies) are instructing readers how to become BBFs with those around them. How can that be possible? What do best spuddies like to do? Why they listen, share and help each other. They are there for each other and enjoy each other's company.

This rhyming book features imaginative creative characters that will have kids giggling. The illustrations are quirky and silly and that's exactly what kids love. "Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies" will evoke conversations focusing on friendship, sharing and helping others. If you like this book the other title in the series... "Pugtato Finds a Thing" will be well worth checking out. I wonder what Pugtato will be up to next... stay tuned.

  • Kelsey

This lovely story introduces you to Pugtato and their friends. The names are fun to say and make you giggle when you read them. It is an adorably fun and imaginative read.

The art is well drawn and very creative. I personally loved Tweetroot, Purrsnip, and Brussels Snouts.

A review by my 2 year old:
    - They did not like Pugtato on the first page (I don't know why Pugtato is a adorable)
    - Favorite was Tweetroot
    - They LOVED smiling like Croccli.

Thank you to Netgalley and Zonderkidz-Books for the ARC!

***updated review my now 4 year old loved Unicorn On the Cob the best and enjoyed meeting all of Pugtato's friends and was definitely more interested in the book this time

  • Lindsey Lewis

This is another pun-filled Pugtato book about being a good friend and how different friends have different qualities that make them special. I liked this one even more than the first Pugtato book. Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies is funny and creative with a positive educational theme, and it's short so it should have no problem holding children's attention.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

Pugtato is back with all his friends! In this book we get to meet them one on one, interacting with Pugtato. The illustrations are so cute! I think my favorite character, besides Pugtato, is Cowbage. Precious. Kids will love the colorful pictures and fun veggie/animal hybrids. I hope there will be more in the future!

Thank you to Sophie Corrigan, Zonderkidz, and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Pugtato, Let's Be Best Spuddies is an adorable, witty, fun book that captured my love from page one. The artwork is beautiful and comical. The rhyming is creative and flows well. I read this to my three year old and he enjoyed it too. He could relate to the animals, veggies, and activities. He even found the humor in the story. The story of friendship is sweet and endearing. I would definitely recommend this book for you and the toddler in your life.
I received this book free through NetGalley and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.

This book could not be more adorable. Pugtato talks about all of his friends in a simple book that is fun and appealing for young kids to look at. my kids got a kick out of this one. A great one as well for kids learning to read as this book has many sight words for kids to point out. I have nothing bad to say at all! I know there are more pugtato books out there and excited to show them to my kids!

  • Bunny

Holy crap, this is about the cutest thing I've ever seen.

My nephew was so amused by the food-as-animals concept, and we had a lot of fun looking at each and finding the funny. I think the Croccoli was his favorite.

The story itself, of being friends and celebrating each other's uniqueness, was lost on him, but not on me. Absolutely wonderful read, and can be enjoyed over and over, as children love to do.

Received via Netgalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

  • Jo

Downloaded for free via Netgalley; of free will review.

This is definitely a book where they took the pictures and then wrote story around them.

The artwork is cute, silly and adorable. veggies are animals and they're friends. It's cute. I like the artwork it's fun

There are Brussel sprout pigs. It's overall worthwhile to purchase for kiddos or a classroom library either for a reader or to look over illustrations.

  • Deena

A delightful and quirky book! Filled with adorable drawings and such creative combinations of vegetables and animals! I'd have to say my favorites were "tomotoad" and " crocolli". The book was very adorable and I definitely would recommend it to kids! They'll have a lot of fun with these creations and artwork!

  • Lisa Laura

A fun rhyming book with creative characters that play on words. Each of Pugtato's friends are good at something and this books highlights that. Silly rhymes and drawings add to this short but sweet book. Definitely a fun read for those who want a quick book before bed. Can engage further with child by having them imagine their own food animal. I enjoyed this fun read.

  • Kaitlyn

    I LOVE PUGTATO!
I loved the other Pugtato book, and this one is just as cute. I love how each food is connected to an animal and that the illustrations are bright and colorful and fun.

  • Kalyn

This picture books is a short and entertaining story about how different friends have different strengths and how they all better your life. The grownups will appreciate all the puns and the kids will love the silliness at the heart of the book.
