The galaxy lies in ruins.Hundreds of planets crushed to nothing more than dust. The Winter Tiger's diabolic plan has been executed and not a single species lifted a finger to stop him. He was born to rule and with the help of the Elder Three and the might of Tigris behind him no one can stand in his way but that doesn't mean those within his own ranks might turn on him...

Star Wolf and the Band of Breeds have formed an alliance that has drawn upon the forces of the Scarlett Fox, the Night Badger and the infamous Leopard Shadowfang but will their combined strength be enough to topple the growing Tiger empire?

Every decision the Winter Tiger makes is born from methodical planning and careful manipulation of the Tiger forces. A wrong move could see him incur the wrath of the Tiger planet's rulers, the loathsome Elder Three. A foul trio too preoccupied with dark arts and rituals designed to prolong their already extensive lifespans.

The Winter Tiger must continue to fight a war on two fronts, head-on against Star Wolf and his newly formed army and internally, amongst the shadows against the ever-growing politics back on Tigris...

Since the true intentions of the Tiger race to conquer the universe were finally revealed at the Council of Worlds, General Winter Tiger, aboard his command ship, Darkchurch, has destroyed over 100 more home planets of innocent species. Other ships in his fleet have encircled the food planets preventing access to everyone but tigers.

Star Wolf, the young leader of the Wolves, has inspired a loose group of leaders and warriors from across the universe to join together and form the Band of Breeds and defeat their common enemy. Red Lion, the great warrior from the Apex War, takes on the task of preparing their fighters and helping the wolves defend their home planet, Lupus. The Night Badger, the Scarlett Fox, and Shadowfang the Leopard, call in their worlds’ fighters to supplement the ranks of the wolves.

Meanwhile, the Winter Tiger is putting his own preparations into action, and it’s not proving to be an easy task. The Elder Three, the leaders of Tigris, are demanding results and are insisting Winter secure his bloodline. (He must mate and produce cubs.) He’s also got his hands full with the old tiger guard, former warriors leftover from the Apex War, and still commanding troops, who question his strategies. Then there is the constant pressure from the up and coming, younger tigers below him, always on the lookout for a weakness, a chink in his armor, and an opportunity to overtake and replace him as second to the Elder Three. Frustrated by side issues and incompetence, Winter has a secret weapon. He’s got a traitor or two among the Band of Breeds.

This second installment in the Sci-Fi series, Song of Star & Winter, by L.A. Frederick, drops the reader right back in the story where Star Wolf left off. It covers the war preparations and the inevitable journey to war with the Tigers and provides some very interesting background on the Winter Tiger character. However, tragic his story, the action proves this is one bad dude from a harsh culture. Our series’ main character, Star Wolf, is still finding his feet after his ascendency to Wolf leader and is realizing the impact leadership has on his personal relationships with his life-long friends, River and Sky. Although there is quite a bit of exposition, it is well done and delivered within the context of a lot of action.

I recommend this book to those that enjoyed Star Wolf, the first book in the series. It is not a standalone novel. THE WINTER TIGER is followed up by book three, THE NIGHT BADGER.

I'm sure there are several reviews below telling you that this is 'Game of Thrones in space', 'Game of Thrones with talking animals' and maybe even 'an R-Rated novel of Brian Jacques' Redwall'. The first two would overstate the value of this series, because Game of Thrones operates in an area of verisimilitude that doesn't really match this. I'm not sure if the author would delight or cringe in me calling this popcorn fare, but to me, it's a compliment. He has certainly given life to these bipedal animals with a plausible explanation, i.e. The Universal Beacon of Light, which hasn't been totally explored yet. When the main protagonist, Star Wolf, the reluctant commander of the Band of Breeds, begins to suspect a mole in this fragile alliance, the author carefully laid out about five different red herrings for whom it could have been, all expertly played. When said mole was finally revealed, I simultaneously cheered as if I'd known all along and grimaced at abandoning the character as a suspect leading to a pretty intense and dramatic conclusion. Night Badger is quickly becoming my favorite character, and I look forward to learning more about the way he operates in the eponymous book 3.

The Winter Tiger's diabolical plan has been carried out to completion. The galaxy has been left in ruins, hundreds of planets crushed into dust. No one, not a single species, tried to stop the destruction he poured out on them. No one felt able to. They thought he was born to rule -- and as he was joined with the Tiger planet's rulers with their dark arts, the horrible Elder Three -- no one believed they could stand in his way! But that isn’t necessarily true. There is an alliance forming. Untested, but maybe with hearts, courage, and spirit to put up enough resistance to slow it down, or tear it down completely. Now the Winter Tiger faces threats from both sides as Star Wolf and the alliance prepare themselves while the evil politics back on Tigris will try to betray him.

We get a glimpse of the Winter Tiger making his first kill on Earth where he hunts and kills a wolf for food. He ripped it apart and pulverized the bones. To have the power of death at the tips of his claws like this was beyond exhilarating. He felt brave and powerful, and he was proud to realize that he was born to be a killer. So it’s easy to see how he was becoming merciless. Will the Alliance be able to push the Winter Tiger back? Is there anything left to save? Grab your copy of this exciting space opera fantasy and see what the future holds – if there still is a future!

A story with a difference. The creation of the species is brilliant, some similar characteristics as those on planet Earth. The concept I can't get over.
The story of war among planets and species is well done and certainly looking forward to the next chapter
    Highly recommended to SCI-FI fans.
