King of Midnight (Rosethorn Valley Fae #1) Reviews

What a silly little book. I was sucked in by one of those facebook ads and decided to give this a go. The concept had a lot of potential and in the hands of a skilled writer could have been a heap of fun. Unfortunately it read more like a synopsis than a fleshed out novel. Relationships moved quickly without making much sense and it just felt like so much was missing. It was so cute and quaint that the sex scenes felt starkly out of place.

Nothing… happens. I mean stuff happens but it happens all at once and then just ends. It was plotless and lame and I really wish I hadn’t spent the $5 on it because it was a COMPLETE RIPOFF.
Nothing is truely established and the character had a habit of telling (not showing) with no evidence or past action to back it up and it all just felt cheap, like a dollar store knock-off.
Also a lot of the development happened “off screen/stage” and you read the characters TELLING YOU STUFF INSTEAD OF THEM DISCOVERING THEM.
This was Wattpad bad with shit tonnes that made no sense and character that were flat, bland and 1-dimensional, AND THEY ALSO NEVER QUESTIONED ANYTHING HAPPENING!
More time should have been devoted to characters developing and a plot existing, with some more explanation sprinkled in so the story didn’t feel so anaemic and shit. You also don’t get anything wholly conclusive by the end.
Even though the next book is from a different set of characters’ perspective you’re going to be getting the same running around like headless chickens song and dance you got in the second half of this book I guarantee.
1 Star is far too generous🤬.

    Maybe 2.75.

I liked the concept, but there is barely any time in the fae realm, the plot is rushed and there is a massive case of insta-love with the main characters.

I'm afraid this one wasn't for me.

Read this on the plane with 3 screaming children in front of me because I couldn’t fall asleep.

⤷ this is book 11 of 77 books i have downloaded for free on amazon kindle, so it may be time to finally go through them all. oh god, wish me luck.

great idea, disappointing execution. this could have been really enjoyable, but was written very juvenile. the characters fell in love faster than i can say "shit" and everything was so underdeveloped. just...thank god it was so short; i don't think i have the patience to read bad things anymore.

    1.5 stars.

I thought this book was a bit more just because of this sentence: His darkness fills her world, but only her song can fill his heart…
    But i had it wrong.
I loved this cover but thats all i have to say about this book.
It was for me a total let down for me.

  • Melissa Welsford

Loved the plot, the start was amazing, the whole book was, amazing short read, can’t wait to get more into this x

Let me start with this warning...
    It ends in a cliffhanger!
Now that that's out of the way wow!
Witty and funny dialogues, lots of action and this whole fairytale-y vibe that this book has it totally make me fall in love with this.
Fast paced with a cliffhanger to blow your mind in the end this book marks the start of another amazing and very promising series by the author.

Meh. So much missed potential. So many missed opportunities. So disappointed.
This had so much potential from the blurb, but it all felt rather rushed. I loved the idea of the midnight ball, but it was merely a blip in the scheme of things. The MCs fall in bed and love at a nauseating rate and the author tries to rectify this by creating the illusion that they were destined to be together since Sara was a child. But honestly, this felt like a last minute decision to fill a plot hole the size of a Mac truck.
And lets be honest, if your best friend had some weird ‘otherworldly’ shenanigans going on PLUS the sudden appearance of the love of her life whom you’ve never laid eyes on before, you’d ask loads of questions. Irritating.

Wow! I love this kind of stuff anyway but this was great. Sara is trying to sell an old mansion in her town so it won't get demolished. She has been fascinated by it since she was a child. She would go over and play in the gardens & sing to the roses. She can't remember anyone ever living there. It is the first house on her list she shows the couple of the day. While she is going around inside pointing out the beautiful features she sets her cell phone on the window sill in one of the rooms. While the couple are looking around she is looking out the window facing away from the wall mirror that reflects the ballroom. She is humming the song she would sing to the roses when she came to play when she was little. From the other side Dorian, the King of Midnight, hears the tune the little girl would sing so many years ago to the roses. He looks out of the mirror to look but there is no one there. The child had brought him much joy in his imprisonment. Mortal time is different than his, now she could be a grandma or maybe even gone. He hears a crash & wonders what is going on. Sara knocked over a vase & will need to tell to company. The couple decide to look at smaller houses. As they are driving away Sara thinks she hears the song she was humming playing. The King of Midnight is sitting on his throne waiting for the monsters trapped in this prison prepare for the ball to begin. That is his sentence, to live this day over for all eternity. Sara helps the couple agree on a house. She is looking for her cell phone & can't find it. She goes to her office to track it on her computer. It's almost midnight & she is ready to go home. She locates it at the mansion on the hill. She really doesn't want to go there this late but she has to be available. She goes to get her phone. As she goes in she hears the grandfather clock that has been silent for many years chiming. After she finds it on the window sill, she sees the mirror in ballroom reflecting a party that isn't there. She walks over to look closer at the people in masks dancing around the ballroom in the mirror. She is in the reflection. She touches it & is suddenly on the other side. She is surrounded by people in masks & ballgowns & suits dancing around the ballroom. A scary looking woman grabs her arm & drags her over to a mesmerizing man sitting on a throne. He asks her to dance, as they start dancing she finds herself in a beautiful gown & he asks if she remembers him. When she doesn't, he says maybe this will help. The song she used to sing as a child is played. They start to smile, there is a loud noise from the chandelier. He tells the other people to get her out of there so she won't be trapped like them. When she finds herself back by herself in the room she remembers someone saying that if someone broke the mirror it would set him free. She gets a chair & tries to break it but can't even crack it. She goes home to go to bed. By morning she is sure it was a hallucination. She goes by the local museum to she her friend Tabitha & see what she knows about the mansion. It turns out it was brought overseas from Wales over 100 years ago. Sara tells her about the company wanting to buy it & knock it down. If she can't save it maybe Tabitha can get some of the beautiful things out of it before this company totally trashes it. Tabitha agrees to go up & look around. They leave. Sara gets to congratulate the couple she had been helping locate the house they wanted for their good buy. On the way home she is still trying to tell herself what she saw last night wasn't real. Unable to sleep she finally decides to prove it to herself & goes to the mansion. It is about midnight when she goes in. Again the grandfather clock hands are spinning & it is chiming. She is also seeing the same party going on in the mirror like she did last night. She gets close to the mirror & turns away. She finds herself back inside the party. She needs to find the King. He wants to know why she is here & she says she wants to help him. He tells her no one can. One tells her to sing for them, another does as well. She is unable to stop singing, it becomes a scream, it breaks the chandelier which then shatters the mirror. Dorian finds himself free & in the mortal world with Sara. They go to her house. He finds her fearlessness of him & her magical strength amazing. While she is making him some tea downstairs he has figured out he has found his Queen. She brings his snack up to the bedroom so they can figure out what to do next. The next morning he comes down while she is making them breakfast, he begins to explain why & how he was trapped in the mirror. At the end of that he tells her she is his queen. He is the King of Darkness it is her lightness that will balance him. She is to be his queen. He kisses her hand on her ring finger, giving her a tattoo - like ring on her finger. He tells her they will finish eating & talk about it more. She tells him he needs to get some clothes, they are going to the mall. They get to the mall & he tries on some clothes that suit him well. They but them & are looking around when there is some noise at a fountain. It is the naiad. Dorian says she must have escaped when he did. She is dangerous they need to get her & send her back. They gather his clothes & the backpack he had seen & purchased. They get her out of the mall & back to the mansion. She is not doing too good out of water. They take her to the koi pond in the garden. They see the shards of mirror glass on the floor. All of the pieces are dark except one or two it shows what the naiad is seeing. Dorian calls the magic of midnight to him & tells Sara to sing. As she is sing a little song it sends the naiad back to the fae realm. the shard goes dark. They try to attach it back to the frame of the broken mirror. The gather the rest of the mirror shards to put in the backpack in case any more monsters escaped. She sees another shard showing her friend Tabitha's place. He asks her who it is & she tells him it's her best friend, they need to get there fast. When they get there, they run in to see Tabitha with a handsome man. When he sees Dorian he runs. They catch up with him at a book meeting. His magic is to get women to fall in love with him & let it drive them mad. Dorian manages to knock him out & get him to the car. Sara & Tabitha are trying to help him get the guy to the mansion as well. Tabitha is taking this all rather well considering. On the way there he starts to wake up, they stop along the way to just send him back where they are. He calls down the midnight powers again & asks Sara to sing. As they are on the way home he tells her she is a bard. At the end of her little song he gets sent back to where he belongs. Sara fills Tabitha in on everything. He sees how much it is draining them & notices how it seems his darkness has seemed to effect the whole town lately. He needs to think a little. Sara & Tabitha try to think of a way to make the town see the mansion as a national treasure. That way it will be protected. They go to one of the smartest & powerful people in the town who could help, Helen Thayer. She tells them some of the possible ways to do it. She tells them to leave out the magic when they are asking for help. Both are shock that she knows anything about that & try to deny any knowledge of what she is talking about. She just laughs & tells them that the whole valley is sort of special. She will talk to who she can & try to help. The next morning Dorian is gone and Sara is trying to find a way to stall the company from finalizing the deal to buy the mansion. When he gets back he tells them he has seen what his darkness is doing to the valley & the people here. He went to see the one who should be able to balance his darkness The King of Light. He was one who sat by & let him be imprisoned. Dorian told them that he had realized that if he had been imprisoned The King of Light may have been as well. He found him & set him free. He came back to Sara to wait for them. While he was waiting for him to arrive he truly made Sara his queen. The next morning they found Sara's phone in the car with over 70 missed calls on it. She called Tabitha to find out she was at the mansion with the company's demolishing crew trying to save the building. They get in the car & get over there. They all notice how the weather is getting better. Dorian sends the workers home with a spell. When Tabitha points out the rainbow overhead. Dorian is a little unhappy to say that The King of Light, his brother, Tristan, is already here. Totally great story! I had the hardest time putting it down! I am already reaching for the next one! All I can say is "GIMME!!!"

King of Midnight takes us to the Faery realm... in a very anti-climatic tale of ... well... I'm not sure exactly. The story had so much potential, but just kinda explodes after the first few chapters.

The mirror/creature plotline just is left hanging there. Literally. They catch a couple characters, and then it's like 'we'll just let that sit for a while' even though a couple pages before now Sara and her friend were totally going to talk about a plan of attack, but then drop her friend off at the museum and she doesn't even say "hey, I thought we were going to discuss what's going on and our plan of attack."... So weird.

I was put off when the King of Midnight uses modern vernacular when he tells Sara "you got this"... but in previous chapters he was using old-school dialogue and turns of phrase. It was... off-putting to read. Nobody learns that quick. So, while the author stayed true to this in the earlier portions of the book, she got a little lax on enforcing this character trait for the King of Midnight.

The author needs a better editor. There was a lot of potential in the story and the characters... and then it just piddled out. No plot development. No character development. It fizzled fast and tanked even faster. I wish Black had spent more time developing the story before publishing... oh, well.

This is a ARC book by Tasha Black, it about a young woman Sara, who is a realtor and her favorite place she would wonder to and sit and enjoy the flower and sing as a young child, was the mansion on cliffside. As a child she could feel the magic of the house, but when a contractor wanted to buy the abandoned mansion and wants to tear down the house and build condos, Sara hoped the sale will not go through. When she realizes she left her cell at the mansion she returns there to retrieve it only to brake a wall to ceiling mirror and was trans ported by magic back centuries and met the King of Night also called King of Midnight.
Dorian has been cursed to stay at the same place and same party for centuries, reliving the same party night after night and now is suddenly thrown into the current time, when a mirror is broken and he meets Sara. Not only did Dorian arrived at this current time period, but also several bad villains and both Sara and Dorian work together to return return them back to their time period. That when another person arrives from the past, his brother.
I am volunteering to leave a review for a ARC of this book.

Sara Mason has had dreams since childhood featuring the mansion on the cliffside and although it feels magical in there she never expected a midnight visit to end in her taking place in a mysterious ball in a fairy realm on the other side of a mirror, let alone to find herself in the arms of a man with a smile that is both sad and cruel. Fae Dorian has been imprisoned as the King of Midnight for centuries until a lovely young woman appears at his nightly ball leaving him with an internal battle between the need to explore a longing for her and the need to protect her. When the mirror is broken the king is released into her world as are other creatures - can she find her own magic via her song with the help of Dorian or will he be forced back into the mirror as the King of Midnight before her can express his love for her and make her his Queen?

This was a sweet light story that could have been improved with more details and description of the ball and Dorian's environment but was still enjoyable. I did enjoy the setting of the old disused mansion and the proximity to Tarka's Hollow. Easy to read and understand. Contains some sexual content.

💢 I am not a Fae lover never have been but I fell in love with the King of Darkness and his pure light you will too. Yep ! You will want read this.
🔹️ Sara Mason works in reality at Tarker’s Hollow Realty Group. As a little girl she used to walk up to the mansion and see the gardens and sing her heart out. She was still single to this day thing anyway and she waited she would get in her car in start to sing, even be at home she would sing. Everything changed when she was showing the mansion.
🔹️ For centuries Dorian has been imprisoned as the King of Darkness. Darkness follows him everywhere he goes, well he just started going place since someone broke the mirror. That someone was his Queen.
☄️ This review is my own opinion, this author is one that I love to read her books.

    3 stars! |Fantasy-NA Romance|

The story had so much potential but instead of developing it more, the author played it safe. The blurb was something unique and never-heard of, and that was what captivated me to take up this book but there was hardly any exciting moments in the book.

Yes it made for a nice read but as soon as I completed reading the last page, I felt so disappointed for the lack of what never even happened in this book.

“Do you really not know what you are?” he murmured.

    She shook her head.

“We’ll find out together,” he told her.

Then he was pressing his lips to hers and she felt the world fall away around her.

We're not really given a detailed insight into MCs' pasts and that vastly impacted my reading experience. Yet I am tempted to read the next book but I'm scared of getting disappointed again after another wonderful blurb. :/

Another cute and steamy series by Tasha Black

4.5 Stars rounded up (because it felt insta-love-y, but since it’s fated mates I feel like I shouldn’t actually complain)

This one was a nice departure from almost of the books I’ve ready by Black, while retaining everything I love about her books. The beginning felt very creepy to me (I have a low tolerance for this), and it felt so right for the premise to have it start that way. The mystery was super compelling, and I really liked the characters. Most of the heroine’s decisions are dealt justified and you feel her going back and forth. The only exceptions to this **spoilers: when she invites him to her home, then to take her bed** were the only time the novel lost me, mostly because inviting stranger to sleep in your house just flat out sounds like a bad idea. But hey, it’s fated mates—so obviously it’s all just gonna work out lol

Dorian is trapped and forced to be the King of Midnight each night. Sara is a realtor attempting to sell a cliffside mansion she has dreamed about since she was a child. She is showing the house to a young couple but they decide the mansion is not for them. Sara forgets her phone at the mansion and has to go back to retrieve it. Once she arrives at the mansion the clock starts working and everything is a little strange. She can see people in a mirror and when she gets close to it she is on the other side in the Fairy realm at a ball. She meets the most amazing man but he said she has to leave nd she is thrusted from the mirror. Sara wants to help the king and the other in the mirror with him told her to break the mirror. It is race against time to save her small town from the monster, she has the magic of song and with Dorians help she has to return all the monster back to the mirror. I love this book, amazing story and wonderful characters.

  • Jennifer Libby

Wow. This new series takes my breath away. How it intertwined with the Tarker’s Hollow characters are going to fun watch develop. Sara believes she is just a real estate agent. Little does she know there is so much more to her. Dorian is a Fae who has been locked away from the world not due to being a bad guy. Dorian remembers Sara as a little sprite floating around his roses and singing to them a special song. Now present day, Sara has grown into a beautiful woman. The mansion has had a long history and it’s in a sad state right now trying to be sold. After showing the mansion to a perspective couple and Sara forgetting her phone there the fun starts. Watch as fate takes over at the steering wheel and hang on for the ride. There are definitely some questions that remain unanswered, but there are more books to come in the series.

Ms. Black does it again with this first new story, “King of Midnight” in the brand new Rosethorn Valley Fae world! ... I loved this magical PNR, fantasy that’s like an adult fairy-tale & a unique mystery to unravel! ... The relatable H/h, Dorian & Sara, with witty dialogue and surprises had me glued to my seat & turning pages like crazy. Add in steamy romance & a touch of suspense & I was a goner until I had finished reading the whole book in record time! .... I never write spoilers or copy blurbs, and even tho I volunteered to read this, it was without any outside influences & I usually buy kindle books whenever I can. So yes, I honestly do recommend this to 18+ adult fans of fiction & now I’m craving more! :D

This is the first story, in the brand new Rosethorn Valley Fae World..... “King of Midnight”

Sara Mason sang to the dead roses as a child and brought them back to life. Now she would bring him back to life, but not by singing to him, but by breaking a mirror.

He's the King of Midnight. Fae Dorian had never imagned that in this nightly party he must endure, that he would find his light in the form of a gorgeous human. She managed what no other could, she broke him out of his prison inside the mirror. But in doing so, she unleashed the other and together they must imprison them lest they ravish humankind. But could he chance darkening her light?

Plenty of magic and intrigue, not to mention the hotness

  • Christina

A solid start to a series that mixes the modern world with a magical one.

Quick summary: Dorian, the titular King of Midnight, is trapped in a time loop until real estate agent, Sara Mason, falls through the looking glass into his world. Unfortunately, by freeing Dorian, other creatures also escaped into the human world. Can they team up to catch them all before havoc is unleashed upon our world?

The spice level is a 1 out of 5 and I didn't think it was needed. The characters are engaging enough that I was just interested to see how they can get through this situation. I honestly liked all the scenes where Dorian was figuring out the modern world. The book is pretty short and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so you have been warned...

  • Jaylah

The premise of this one was intriguing, but I wasn't thrilled with the execution. It didn't feel as polished as it could have been. I think that had it been a full length book, it would have allowed the author to really dive into the story and give it more detail and world building, allowing room for scenes to breath. Instead, it just felt rushed the entire way through With that, it was very much insta - love. Too much so that I didn't really have any grand feelings for the couple. I guess simply put, it should have been longer so it wasn't as rushed and allowed for more world building with better transitions. I'm giving it three starts because the writing overall wasn't bad and it wasn't not enjoyable enough story. It just didn't knock my socks off and I wasn't all that impressed.

  • Jesii

A good read but feels rushed

I will say there is a good little plot here, but I felt like it was a bit rushed. You barely get to know Sara before she is whisked away by this King she is suddenly in love with and trusts fully over night. I would have expect the king to be a tad bit more ominous considering he’s the king of darkness and midnight. I liked the read but it definitely felt like the author wants to explain everything later with this novel. Hopefully the next book explains a bit more and doesn’t leave me feeling like there is something missing. Tons of potential here though.

  • Yvonne Daniels

    Absolutely Captivating

WOW I really enjoy reading about Tarker 's Hollow and the King of Midnight takes us back with another thrilling experience. The characters are so compelling and exciting, they are funny with unique personalities that you will enjoy every moment you read. There is plenty of drama with sizzling chemistry. I am so excited that this is a awesome start to the series. If you enjoy reading paranormal romance you will enjoy Tasha Black as much as I do. It's everything that I absolutely enjoy reading.

  • anne pavlish

    Semi spoilers

Nice short story. As what happens when a story is short, things get tight. Not really sure about the broken mirror. Only two escapees? No mention of the rest to be captured. The book is HEA but it definitely continues. No closure with the mansion. Lots issues you kind of presume got done or finished. Like the poor ladies in the book club.
How about the all important meeting to help save the mansion. Add another 100 pages to maybe answer these questions. Or have a part 1 and part 2.?
