The Demon's Retribution (Shadow Quest #3) Reviews

    Demons check
    Sexy check
    Hilarious check
    Read it check

Kyra has been hiding on Earth, struggling to balance her magic as she relies on forming bonds… but the short life span of humans keep interfering. Cale is a delicious demon. He has some serious asshole tendencies to protect himself after being betrayed tragically *cough* cliche *cough*

This two clash and argue, which blurs the lines between chemistry and desperately needed anger management.

“And how did you go about strengthening this alliance?”
From the corner of his eye, Cale saw Sonya raise a brow just as he registered the snide innuendo in his own tone.
Unamused, Kyra remarked, “Well, Cale, I simply slept with every male in the clan. No surer way than that.
Kyra smirked when she heard Cale’s low growling”

So you definitely need to enjoy angry big alphas that learn to be more vulnerable. But I mean read how fucking cute this scene about Kyra’s gift is....

    “Preposterous. A worthless hunk of—
    A small blade, he realized.
He tested its sharpness with his thumb. Not bad.
There were other half-moon carvings, and before long, he had them all pulled out. He lowered to the couch, gazing at his prize in pure masculine awe. It had everything! Albeit small, but ingeniously crafted. Multiple blades, tools, there was even a small light at one end.
Utterly enamored, he forgot his anger and spent the rest of the evening exploring his new favorite possession.”

its a goddamn pocketknife, i fucking cantttt lololol

This is definitely the kinda series where each book can be read alone but they all build on the general overlapping plot of eventually killing the bad guy after them all. Honestly, I’d just recommend picking and choosing based on what characters interest you the most, as you can totally keep up and fill in any blanks

The world-building is set up where all of Earth’s mythology has alien origins of them visiting with their superior technology and magic where all the sisters are uniting to use their abilities to save the world from the bad guys that we get some sneak peeks into when we visit the planet

“The phrase “what could it hurt?” held a whole new meaning when the consequence meant potentially shattering the planet.”

Overall, a fun sexy sci-fi read that I’d definitely recommend because you already made it this far looking for alien smut.

Hmm, a good mix of paranormal and sci-fi, but not enough of the magic part. By that I mean the main character, Kyra's magic. She only rarely uses it and never practices it, which I found annoying as the books with her sisters were much more so about their gifts/talents.

The male main character, Cale, is a demon and a giant asshole. I didn't like him at all because he's just plain out nasty to Kyra. I don't like mean guys and he is one. He's all cracked in the head and takes it out on everyone around him. Get some anger management classes, demon dude.

The secondary characters were good, minus Zoe and Sonya. I quite liked the witch, Portia. I'm not sure if there's a fourth book in this series, but j assume there is as many things were left open ended.

The best parts of this book were the end on Evlon. I enjoyed finding out about the planet, people, and what the bad guys had been doing.

The romance part annoyed me because Cale was such an asshole to Kyra. If he'd not been a jerk at every turn I would've liked this better.

    3-3.5 stars

I've been a fan of Kiersten Fay's 'Shadow Quest' series since first coming across her self-published novel 'Demon Possession'. It was chock full of spelling/grammatical errors, but it also harbored an interesting story with likable characters and I eagerly picked up the next book, 'Demon Slave' (which just as good if not better than the first) when it was released. Now Fay brings us the third book, 'Demon Retribution', and while it answers a lot of questions and delivers a conclusion of sorts to the ongoing story arc, I was unfortunately a bit disappointed in this one.

    What I liked:
    1) The explanation of mythological/paranormalian creatures as space-bounding aliens. I won't say too much more so as not to give too much away, except that I liked Fay's reasoning as to why demons, "fairies", shifters, etc appear in Earth's mytholgy when in fact they are from alien worlds.

    2) The first half of the book. In DR, we meet up again with demon Cale as he locates the eldest Faieara Princess Kyra on Earth. Cale's been entrusted with protecting Kyra until the spaceship Marada arrives to reunite her with her sisters and then embark on liberating her home planet from hostile aliens. I enjoyed reading about Kyra's experiences on Earth and the initial back and forth between her and Cale as they banter back and forth and struggle with their mutual attraction.

    What didn't work for me:
    1) Weird Scottish accents cropping up in alien species. Sure, Scottish accents are way sexy (especially on warrior-like males), but this was a big ??? for me and didn't really make sense, nor was explained, in the context of the story.

    2) Sonya and Ethan. Don't get me wrong - I've thoroughly enjoyed the Sonya/Ethan side story since they first met in 'Demon Possession'. They've enjoyed some great sexual tension! But... their relationship seemed too easily resolved from what it was. I wanted more angst! I know things aren't 100% resolved with them, but I was kinda hoping for the tension to be drawn out more with it maybe leading to their own book...

    3) Anya and Nadua. They show up as supporting characters in this book, but they fell way flat IMO. Considering Anya, Nadua and Kyra hadn't seen nor heard from each other in over 400 years you'd think their reunion would have been a bit more... exciting. Alas, it was like they were just seeing again after having had an obligatory family dinner a couple of months previously. There was no real sisterly love or connection between them. I actually found Anya annoying and Nadua quite cold.

    4) The last half of the book. When Kyra and Cale (and Zoë) get picked up by the Marada, things got a tad boring for me. I wasn't inpressed with the "reunion" and the whole "saving the planet" thing felt really rushed. For any "Star Trek: Voyager" fans out there the up-til-now mysterious Kayadon race was very similar to the "Vidiians" and thus, I didn't find it too orginal. Honestly, I found myself skimming through what should have been an exciting climax, but I just couldn't muster up the enthusiasm for it.

I'm fairly certain that Fay will be continuing the 'Shadow Quest' series, perhaps with an emphasis on the Scottish accented Dragon-shifters... hopefully, the next story is back up to the calibre of the first two.

Can a heart betrayed ever be whole?

Cale has been betrayed by love - and for a demon there are no second chances. He has been to the “Edge” and fought his way back with the help of his brother & sister.

Kyra the oldest of the fairytale sisters, has escaped to earth and has been alone for hundreds of years - unable to form deep bonds due to the short life spans of humans and the need to stay hidden with an untamable power within her that destroys.

When Cale appears to rescue Kyra and reunite her with her sisters - these two are immediately drawn to each other - and yet, due to their own person struggles & pasts fight hard against the attraction and each other.

Can they survive the enemies that find them and each other during the journey to save Evlon? Add in a few expected and intriguing side characters - a spunky human friend, a space witch and a friendly Karaydon in a world saving battle that includes magic and dragon shifters.

I found myself so emerged in these struggles and characters I lost all track of time in the turning of the pages. This series is most definitely a winner for me.

    3.5/5.0

I did really enjoy this story, there were just a few things that didn't quite mesh... like why Cale had SO much trouble coming up with a solution to his mating problem. With even a bit of research with Daphne one spell could surely undo or work around another couldn't it?

Also, while Kyra wasn't nearly as unsympathetic as Nadua was in the previous book, I still just couldn't catch enough depth in her character to really grab me. Maybe I’m just having trouble connecting with the way this author writes heroines, though.

The story overall, however, was very good.

  • Jeanny

Three stars only slightly better than book one and mostly because I liked the h & H much more. Also the war didn’t hurt. I’m not going to read books 2 or 4 I’m just not interested in those characters.

  • Maria

Out of the series so far, Demon Retribution is my favorite.

There are aliens invading New York in search of a lost princess, back alley fights, coffee houses, mysterious powers of destruction, true mates where there cannot be, magic, family reuniting after being separated for four centuries, finding love and being betrayed, political alliances, mercenaries, savage jealousy, kidnapping, war and saving a planet and its people from the aggressors of many planets and captors of the last 400 years through great sacrifice of one's life and magic.

The story is fantastic and hits all of my favorite genera. The transition between POV is smooth and feels natural. When you are wanting to know what someone else is thinking/feeling the POV switches and your questions are answered. This story covers missing information from the previous stories. DR could be read as a stand alone book and you wouldn't necessarily feel like you are missing out on anything, but it is better in the series. DR is packed full of action and excitement and is hard to put the book down. It ends the Faiera Princesses stories well. Can't wait to see what the Shadow Quest has in store for us next.

I LOVED the first and second book in this series. This one, the third, I liked, but didn't love as much. In fact, I think I liked it as much as I did only as an after effect of the previous stories.

    What I liked:
Love the set-up of Earth's mythology being based on aliens visiting. What a great concept! Cale is also one delicious demon and it was fun to finally see him get his own book and a resolution to his inner 'demons'. Actually, out of all the heroes in the books, Cale has been my favorite. In a strange way, I felt I was able to relate to his pain of being betrayed.

    What I didn't like:
The ending was a bit rushed, the secondary characters were flat (which is saying a lot considering that I'd already fallen in love with most of the secondary characters from the previous books), and some of the magical abilities of the fairies were not explained in enough detail to satisfy this devoted fantasy/sci-fi reader. Finally, there were a lot of sex scenes, but for some reason most of these scenes lacked the sizzle and chemistry of the past books.

  • Yarelis Martínez

I love the book! Even when Cale was getting on my nerves. That male has a talent to infuriate people beyond my comprehension. Anyways, as I said I loved the book. Seeing how Kyra interacted with her sisters was so sweet. Love how she grew and thrust herself with her own power. There were some cute scenes, hot scenes (you can imagine some 😉), and some very emotional scenes (at least one in particular to me). Now I need to get my hands on the next book!

  • Emily (Mrs B's Books)

This is another brilliant story and follows in the brother Calico's (Cale) and the sister Kyralynn (Kyra) and theme they share together along with the conclusion of the story.

Cale finds out that his mother and Felicia is mate had some bad juju and in the end it gives Calic a chance to have the happy ever after that he needs and should have had.

Kyra is the oldest sister and had to step up to her responsibilities and in the end it is her and her destructive magic that brings the magic of her sister and Ethan into the mix to win the war on her home planet.

Although there are twists and turns along the way along with betrayal and love, our friends all manage to keep their spirits up and their wills strong.

I really look forward to reading Sonya and Ethans story next.

  • Pamela(AllHoney)

The third book in the Shadow Quest series by Kiersten Fay. While the ship, Marada, goes to rescue Malik, Cale was sent to Earth ahead of the rest to search for the last princess, Princess Kyralyn (Kyra). Kyra doesn't know who the stranger is that keeps showing up but she certainly didn't think it was the man who would take her home. It has been 400 years since Kyra left her home planet of Evlon due to the invasion of the Kayadon.

Not my favorite of the series but it was okay. Cale has issues with his mate who betrayed him and because his people can only have one true mate in their lifetime, he doesn't understand his feelings for Kyra and was a major jerk about it. This made the romance element tedious for me at times. We finally get to the Princesses' home world and the story is essentially wrapped up. However, there is one more book in the series that tells Ethan and Sonya's story. Their story has been unfolding in this book and the previous book in the series so I am not certain I will continue the series. I am sure there is more to the story, I just am not certain I am interested enough to read it.

  • Pam Godwin

Third book in the Shadow Quest series and won't be the last, given the unfinished Sonya/Ethan conflict. I've stuck with this space opera-ish story for the characters and their imaginative alien attributes and abilities. There was some cool space hopping in this one--I would've loved to have experienced more of the Uli Rings space city--making this as much a planetary romance as a paranormal/sci-fi romance. The setting began on Earth, which was fun to perceive through Kyra's viewpoint and helped me connect with her. The mission, the crisis, was well thought-out as it had been building from the previous books. My big gripe was the amount I paid for the profusion of grammatical errors and misused words. Little things like that pull me right out of the story. I'd overlook it if it only cost me 99 cents. But for 7x that, Fay should be investing in an oops editor--at a minimum.

  • Emily Dickson

Cale and Kyra were fantastic to read about! I think I fell in love with this story and its characters. Both are likeable and the two had fantastic chemistry. You can read this story as a stand alone book but honestly you'll want the first two books as they are all that good. The story had lots of action and great secondary characters that I enjoyed. All in all this book is one I will probably reread as I enjoyed it that much! Can't wait to read the next book!

  • Vivian Chrisman

What's the saying about things getting better with age? That could also be said about Kyra. Over her many(400+) years on Earth, Kyra has become stronger and self-sufficient. Definitely not what Cale expects to find but maybe that's what he needs. Now to make sure they are both standing after the final showdown. That saying about age...it could also apply to this series.

*I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing*

  • Becs

Just like the 2 books before, I was just completely sucked into this story. The Demon's Retribution was my absolute favorite though.

I enjoy all of the characters, but honestly I think I've enjoyed the many secondary characters more. Each of them have at one point or another made me smile, giggle, or out right laugh out loud.

My favorite moment in this book? When Kyra & Zoey gift Cale a Swiss Army knife.....it was the most adorable reaction and had me falling hard for Cale.

    Actual Rating 2.5 Stars

This series got to be really predictable which is a shame since I really loved the first book. It's just that the formula, pattern was basically the same with the previous books so it's not as interesting.

I liked Sonya but I would have preferred if Ethan was paired up with another, they were just too easy for me and again predictable.

  • Gwen (The Gwendolyn Reading Method)

Ok the ending is tres ridiculous, but I still enjoy this series.

  • Jenn

The ending was a bit abrupt and this one seemed more heavy on the sex than any of the other books in the series. That said, the action, the story was so much more intense that I couldn't put it down.

  • H.A. LYNN

I was disappointed. I did not enjoy it as much as Demon Possession, but it kept my attention only because I was expecting things to turn out differently than they did. I don't know if this is the final end to this series, and I hope it isn't, but I will be very sad if this is how it ends.

First, I really did not like Zoey as a character at all. The only role she really played was helping translate the book, which was an accident. I honestly think we could have done without her character. Any one of the other characters, or even just the witch herself, could have ended up gaining the power of translation by "accident." I did like that Kyra ended up being on Earth. That was refreshing since the rest of the characters were from different places around the galaxy.

Secondly, these books obviously give the female characters a lot of power over men, but also in their position over their subjects. I wanted to see more interaction between the sisters and their people. Kyra took command of most of the planning with the allies, but I wanted to see some sort of balance of power between the three of them, even if that meant that they take different jobs within the restoration and negotiations of their planet/war. It is clear that all three of them are independent in their own stories at times, but in this one they all seemed to highly depend too much on their mates. These are suppose to be strong female characters and if they are going to have so much power in the end to finish a war that barely even seemed to have started, I wish they had been portrayed as "damsels in distress" a little less and more as warrior princesses.

Speaking of the war, it seemed to come out of no where, and then all of a sudden the sisters are gathering their magic together and the war is over. I like the magic that was used between the four characters to end the battle, but I did not like how it started so suddenly and ended just as quickly. It did show the sisters' strength together, but I would have liked it even more if there had been a conflict in the middle of the battle. For example, it would have been heartbreaking, but awesome if one of the main characters (other than Ethan) was fatally injured. It would have put a twist on how everyone on the battle field would have been feeling at the time, it would have distracted them and made them weak, pushing the sisters to summon up their magical strength. We didn't know that Ethan was weak until after the battle was over, and by then they had a chance to get him to safety. However, if Sonya or another beloved character (god-forbid Sebastian or Cale) had been killed off during battle the sisters' rage, pain, and heartbreak would have been even more compelling, pushing them over "the edge," causing that blinding magic to kill off the enemy. Yes, we would have lost major characters and readers would be furious, but the strength of the sisters would still be intact and more powerful than ever, which is what I think this story lacked for me in the end. Honestly, I would have liked to see the girls overcome the loss of one of their men. It would show a weakness, but also show that they are capable of taking care of themselves. They do lose their father and grieve over him, but the entire series seems to hint at the fact that he isn't going to pull through, so we aren't really surprised that he dies.

The sex is hott and steamy, as always. Who doesn't love that? My boyfriend loves the fact that I came across this series because he thinks it's cute when I get flustered during the intimate parts.

The constant possession the men have over the women is irritating at this point, in my opinion. I really wanted to see the female characters take the lead in this book, and for the most part Kyra did, but I hoped that the other two would have had more strength at least by the time the battle rolled around. I got enough of the demons' strengths and their constant need to protect the sisters in the last two books, and really had hoped this one would have been about the girls' powers and independence without the constant need of their mates. It's great to have a strong man behind you, but their possessiveness is frustrating and sickening at times. It made it way to hard to believe that the princesses had any strength of their own. In each book you can see their individual strength, but in this book all I could see was the girls being shielded by men every time they breathed.

Clearly, my favorite character at this point is Sonya. She is the only strong, independent female. Even with her feelings for Ethan, she maintains her independence and badass attitude. I love that she was sexually innocent until Ethan, and that we are left wondering if she mated with him or not. Her relationship wasn't made the center of attention like the other girls' relationships, her strength was shown the entire time, and it was only nearing the end that she started feeling protective over him. There are clearly some hidden emotional issues that Sonya is dealing with, which I am still curious about. For the most part, she keeps her cool and pushes her emotions aside until her job is done. It's nice that she is guarded, but also opens up to Ethan at times. I wish there had been more of her characteristics shared with the other females in this story. I was also glad that Ethan was in a coma after he used up a lot of his own energy during the battle because it suggests a not-so-happy ending.

Finally, I don't know how I feel about Cale being King. I think his and the other demon men have shown enough of their masculinity at this point, and I wish that this position had not been given to him. It would have given Kyra more strength of her own as Queen.

The relationships are great, minus some of the overprotective parts. The sex is awesome, as always. The description of people, places, and things is detailed, but not overwhelming. I suppose I'm just not thrilled that this story is, for the most part, ending "happily-ever-after." I think there is a lack of tragedy. Like I mentioned before, killing of main characters would have pissed off a lot of people, but I think it would have made the story better and the female characters stronger. I struggled with what to rate this story as because I love the author and I love the series. I'm just so disappointed with the ending. Even if this isn't the final book in the series, I really wish there had been something to totally throw me off during the battle scene. Maybe there will be a twist in other books to come, if this series continues, but it would have been nice to see it in this one.

If I had it my way, which wont happen, I would want the battle to be bloodier and longer. I would have killed off one or two of the main characters. Examples: 1. Sonya dies while Ethan is in a coma...Wouldn't that be romantically tragic? 2. Cale or Sebastian dies as the sisters are attempting to reach each other to harness their powers, causing one of them to struggle emotionally. I would have chosen Cale just because we led up to his and Kyra's romance, but he had not mated with her yet. It would infuriate readers & Kyra would take on her position as Queen alone. or 3. Kill off Zoey along with one of the other major characters that way you have two major deaths that affect at least one of the sisters. Thank God I don't get to chose who lives and who dies because the audience would be really mad at me ;)

*excuse any typos. this was a long one*

    Bad boy Calic.

Calic the last of the demon boys story to be told. Cale as he likes to be called is one hell of a sexy demon. With short spiky blond hair, blue eyes, tall, broad shoulders, a chest and six pack to drool over he was good enough to eat. A player in every sense of the word he seduced women for his own enjoyment, playing the field and avoiding any sort of emotional attachment. You can't help feeling a little sorry for him because if it wasn't for his mates betrayal he wouldn't be the way he is now. He always made his intentions clear though letting the females he was perusing know that it wasnt serious, just a one time deal nothing more. He's sent to earth in search of the final princess Kyralyn and upon finding her it's as if his heart and soul have sensed something in Kyra his mind cannot believe or accept. Their first meeting was intense and quite hilarious as he couldn't seem to stay away from her. The chemistry between them was undeniable, their attraction and heat a palpable thing. No matter how hard Kyra and Cale try to stay away from each other they just can't. God their is soooo much passion between them it could set your kindle on fire! All that building lust after their interrupted so many times must have given Cale the biggest case of blue balls ever lol. When they finally do come together he utters the sexiest line ever 'I am going to have you now' to then release his inner beast. And once he's had a taste..... once is never enough, a big problem to his love 'em and leave 'em life style. Even if his heart aches for her he keeps looking for ways to distance her from him as he can never offer her forever breaking her heart into pieces in the process. To get his point across their were numerous times he was insentive and cruel saying some horrendous things to her. He even burst out saying that he could never feel anything for her, that his obsession is all an illusion created by some faieara magic the demons are susceptible to. Omg after I heard that I thought Kyra get some self respect and forget about him. If he really wants you he better be prepared to grovel but not after I'd slapped him good after how he behaved. Inbetween their lovers quarrel they are recruiting allies for their upcoming war and we get to meet the Dragon king and his three son's Tristan, Gavin and Lear. Tristan just happened to be an old flame off Kyra's so it was great seeing Cale loose his shit lol. The focus is taken off of them for a while as they finally arrive at her planet and they prepare for war. Their's plenty of action throughout the book to keep you entertained with loads of angst and passion too. My only issues were these: firstly how was it that Cale's problem was fixed? Aided by the elves magic when he didn't need healing? I mean having your mate bond broken was susposed to be impossible and he wasn't ill or injured sooo what the hell happened their??? Were also given no information about Sebastian and Anya or Malik and Nadua. Did they stay in the palace too? I guess they must have but it would have been nice to have been told so. Then the story just ends without any closure for Sonya and Ethan! I mean he's been in a coma for a while with no signs of waking and I hope were told what happens between them in Sonya's book or I'll go mad!!!

This 3rd book in the Shadow Quest series takes us to Earth where the demons find the last of the 3 princesses scattered after an invasion of their planet. We get to know one more of the male demons and see how his heart gets won over after a past betrayal. There is also a final showdown at the end of the story I won’t get into, but the action builds in momentum through the entire book to the point I couldn’t stop reading. I absolutely loved everything about the ending! No big cliffhangers, although I would love to see Fey continue the series at some point and introduce us to more characters in the future that they make for themselves.

  • Krystal

In the third book of the series the third sister Kyra is found. Cale acts more like a hormonal moody teen through a good portion of story (could have used less of this). A great read with some new likeable characters introduced & some not so likeable. I loved the details given of the space city & Kyra’s home planet as well as the bits of New York. The actual war was fast & a bit glossed over; however as this isn’t a horror novel it was just right. Overall this story is fast paced, action packed, with a bit of humor & steam that just keeps the pages turning.

I voluntarily agreed to review this book, and was given an Advanced Reader Copy to do so.

  • Jennifer

This one again picks up right when Cale gets to Earth to find Kyra, and of course, he doesn't do it the right way. The bad guys are there too, and they are on the run. Luckily his family's ship is right their to rescue them and a Kyra's BFF who has to tag along. Lots of drama and action and a huge battle to save her world. Loved all the previous couples, plus we see more of his sister, Sonya, and her friend, Ethan's relationship develop.

    Yup, Samantha out.

Romance was formulaic, characters were flat, writing was terrible. Does this author have a copy editor?? Not even worth the time to review it.

I didn't like this as much as the first or second book. The main focus of the last 2/3 of the book was about returning to Evlon and then battling the Kayadon. There really wasn't much of a focus on the two main characters and their love story. Cale was a pretty disappointing Hero...
