The Crocodile Makes No Sound (Lord Hani #2) Reviews
-
The Crocodile Makes No Sound is the second book in the Lord Hani Mysteries series by N.L.Homes, and like the first book (Bird in a Snare) it was an absolute winner for me.
This time the diplomat Hani stays in Egypt investigates the blackmailing of The Beloved Royal Wife and murder associated with it while being under surveillance by the king's police. The reason for that is the disappearance of his brother-in-law who used to be a priest of the now forbidden god Amun-Re and speaks openly against the new regime.
I'm in love with the characters! Hani is so fleshed-out and detailed and also very likeable. His worries about his family, the political situation and his accumulating problems made me feel sorry for him and kept me glued to the pages. I desperately needed to know whether he'd be alright in the end.
It's clear that the author is an expert in the field and a lot of research went into these books. That's exactly the kind of historical fiction I love and keeps me coming back for more.
So, like the first book in the series, I can highly recommend the series and I'll definitely keep on reading! -
The Crocodile Makes No Sound by N. L. Holmes a fascinating four-star read. This is number two in the Lord Hani Investigations and I have read them in order and enjoyed them this way, you could read them as sand-alone, but I would recommend reading them in order as they build and develop the characters and you add depth the more you read. I’m not normally one for a historical story, but this series has gripped me, and the cosy mystery aspect has great and the scene descriptions have been enthralling. The author has a great way of keeping you able to keep everything on track even when there are multiple characters all trying to but in and take part in the story, you can easily keep up. Bring on number three as I am eagerly waiting.

The Crocodile Makes No Sound by N. L. Holmes was a wonderful sequel to Bird in the Snare. Book 2 in the The Lord Hani Mysteries quartet; let’s get right into it.
I am obsessed with the covers in this series, and The Crocodile Makes No Sound definitely did not disappoint. It makes it so obvious that this is a mystery series set in ancient Egypt. The hieroglyphic alligator, the shiny gold title, the blood spatter, the texture of the background, the shadows, and how large the title text is; it is MAGNIFICENT! It does exactly what a book cover is supposed to do!
There is so much good that I want to say, but I have to keep this spoiler free, so bear with me! I adored this book and you will, too.
The style of this book felt perfect to me. There were indented paragraphs, appropriate usage of words and symbols, and the ellipsis spacing and capitalization was dead on.
The internal conflict within Hani was appropriate and well thought-out. He has to stretch himself thin from keeping his word to the current king, the new vassal king, the famous queen (Nefertiti), and the king’s mistress. There is so much to unpack from each character and how Hani’s mind works surrounding all of the issues facing each person. He fights with himself on the grounds of what he knows is right and what he has to do; which, often, are not on the same side.
This thrilling mystery has a combination of murder, conscious conflict, betrayal, and enough cliffhangers to keep you interested until the very end; everything you need to have for a successful historical fiction mystery.
I don’t often award 5 stars to books, but The Crocodile Makes No Sound by N. L. Holmes truly deserves it. This sequel, which could stand alone, is a masterpiece that any book lover should read. -
This was a thrilling and intriguing novel that immerses you into the story at the very beginning. It includes historical data on ancient Egypt coupled with a detailed glossary at the end which helps the reader along with some difficult information about the Egyptian empire. This is the second in a series, which although I did not read the first, was descriptive enough to keep my interest and understanding. In this book, Hani, the main character, gets drawn into religious conflict that could place his own family in danger. The book includes many unexpected twists and turns and can be read as a stand alone story. If you enjoy historical fiction and suspense, you will enjoy this book immensely.

Good Read
Good read for Egyptian history enthusiasts. Great series, rounded characters, Good plot line with enough twists to keep you interested. -
N. L. Holmes’ ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ is an excellent example of thoughtful, engaging historical fiction that offers readers a deep-dive into ancient Egypt by way of a compelling, politically-fueled mystery.
Set in ancient Egypt, ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ picks up where the first ‘Lord Hani’ mystery (‘Bird in a Snare’) left off, once again following the fictional storyline of Lord Hani, an actual person plucked from the pages of history. With book two, Hani quickly gets drawn into a religious conflict that’s brewing between the ‘old guard’ and Akhenaten, a ruler bent on religious reform—a conflict that ultimately places his own family in harm’s way. What follows is a story rife with murder, intrigue and a healthy dose of subterfuge, one featuring a carefully constructed cast of characters whose motivations are constantly in question.
Throughout the novel Holmes puts her archaeology background to good use, painting the background of her story with precise, vivid strokes and populating it with realistic, nuanced characters. While reading the first book in this series will definitely add to the overall context of some of Hani’s early decisions, ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ is ultimately a stand-alone story, one that can be enjoyed as a first-entry to what is a four-part series.
With an impeccably paced plot and an abundance of unexpected twists and turns, Holmes has managed to provide readers with a novel that bridges the gap between literary fiction and page-turning suspense—a must-read for fans of anything ‘Egypt’ and historical fiction alike! -
This is a long novel but the storyline flows along at a good pace and is full of drama and mystery and I was disappointed when I had finished it. This is book two in a series and we are back with Egyptian diplomat Hani. As I learnt from book one Lord Hani was an actual person although the storyline is fictional. It can be read as a standalone story but readers will understand Hani’s backstory better if you read the series. Again Hani makes a great main character, he is well defined and relatable as well as likeable and he really brings the plot together.
This story takes place in Egypt during the period known as the New Kingdom. The time period is around 1346 BCE, and it’s now four years into the solo reign of Akhenaten’s solo reign and his religious ‘reforms’ are causing widespread dissatisfaction. This is especially true amongst those that practiced the old religion of Amen-Ra. Our hero Hani, is already under the kings watchful eye due to the disappearance of his Amen priest brother in law. Hani then gets drawn into an investigation involving the blackmailing of the ‘Beloved Royal Wife’. Complicating things further for Hani is the new vassal king of A’amu, who is being lodged at Hani’s house whilst waiting for the king to grant him an audience. The problem is Hani’s house guest is not proving to be very loyal to the new king. Hani is aware of his own oath to the king but must also follow his conscience.
Reading this novel I felt completely immersed in the story due to the authors wonderfully detailed descriptions of both the characters and the setting, so much so I felt I could be in ancient Egypt. The authors knowledge and research shines through, all wrapped up in a great murder mystery thriller. The historical notes, list of characters and glossary of terms and places are all very fascinating and helpful especially being at the beginning of the book as this makes it easy to refer back to if needed. I was hooked from start to finish and I enjoyed the cosy mystery element of the story which kept me guessing until the end of the novel. I look forward to further books in this series. -
The Crocodile Makes No Sound (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 2)
By N.L. Holmes
5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book The Crocodile Makes No Sound (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 2) by N.L. Holmes. It pulled me in from the beginning and I was hooked. This story has Lord Hani in several serious situations at once. The danger to him and his family becomes very real. What will happen? Read this book to find out. I love the character of Lord Hani. When he is involved in an investigation, he does his best to find out the truth behind it. He is always walking a fine line with his personal beliefs and those of the current king’s. He is a man who loves his family and has friends that he can call on when needed. This story had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. The author does an amazing job of making me lose myself in the time period. Also, making both the storyline and the characters come alive. I enjoyed reading about many of the additional characters as they have been brought forward from the first book. This story includes secrets and danger. Don’t miss out on an exciting and entertaining book that you won’t be able to put down until the final page. I highly recommend reading it. -
The Crocodile Makes No Sound is the second book of N.L. Holmes’ Lord Hani Mysteries. I am blown away by the research that the writer has done and I am eternally grateful for the list of characters at the beginning of the story as I found myself going back there constantly as I tell you it is not so easy to remember the names and backgrounds as one would think! You can read the story as a standalone as it has its own storyline and what is amazing is that Lord Hani is an actual person and so many elements in the story are ‘real’, the whole story itself is fiction.
I suggest you take time when you start reading as then you can fully appreciate the details that the writer brings into her storytelling, it is like a colourful tapestry that you need to look at long and hard to truly see all the colors and connections and … the way she has with words, oh my, I have no words …
If you love history and especially Egyptian history AND mysteries then this book is for you and it pulls you in and you cannot leave it until you come to the end to see whether Lord Hani manages to resolve a conflict without too many losing their lives … -
This is the second book in this series which I enjoyed just as much if not more than the first. This is a well developed story that has characters that make you feel part of the story. They made it easy to read and kept it engaging. I had no issues connecting with them as they kept me turning pages. There is alot going on in this story but the author did a great job of not making it confusing. The details are written in a way that made you want to know more and wanting to see what would happen next. This is not normally a book that I would read but it made a great afternoon read. I am glad I picked it up and so will you. If you have not read book one I highly suggest you do. I highly recommend this book.

4 Stars
The Crocodile Makes No Sound is the second book in The Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L Holmes. This is another cosy, historical mystery set in ancient Egypt.
We met Hani, a diplomat, in the first book- and team up with him once more as this mystery plays out. With blackmail, politics, religion, and mystery all woven together, it makes for an interesting read. We are transported to the time of Akhenaten- which the author does a brilliant job of recreating and bringing to life.
As with the first book in the series, the author’s knowledge and passion for the period really shines through in the story and through her writing. This passion certainly added to the ‘richness’ of the story.
Looking forward to seeing what Hani gets up to in Book Three!
Thank you, N.L Holmes! -
I loved it! The Crocodile Makes No Sound (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 2) by N.L. Holmes, was such an excellent read. This is the second book that I have read by this author. I can't tell you how much I enjoy these books. These mystery stories set in ancient Egypt are just delightful to read from the first page to the last. Holmes crafts the story out of such beautiful use of the language. I almost forget that I'm reading a story because I get lost in her excellent writing. I almost feel like I am on those streets in Egypt. Like I'm a part of the story. An excellent story an excellent mystery and I'm already looking forward to the next one. If you love to see words used as if they were paint on a canvas this is a story for you.

This magnificent series just gets better and better! Having loved the first book, I found the second in the series moved on seamlessly from the events in Bird in a Snare. The main character, Hani, as experienced and wise a diplomat as he is a loving family man is a superb guide into the world of Ancient Egypt and its increasingly dangerous political mood as the reign of Akhenaten continues. The author's depiction of everyday life, with the sights and sounds and customs, draws the reader in like a magnet!
N.L. Holmes combines her in-depth historical and archaeological knowledge with superb storytelling skills to create a reading experience that is very special indeed. I will be gladly following Hani and his beloved family in their further adventures. -
This story follows Hani, a diplomat who is pulled into an investigation of the Queen. Hani’s conscience had forced him to leave the diplomatic corps as he no longer respected the foreign policies. When Hani’s brother-in-law goes missing, Hani needs to find out what has happened. This is the second book in the series – the first one being Bird in a Snare – an equally enthralling read. The scene is set in ancient Egypt – with very descriptive scenes and maps included! The amount of detail in the scenes and the extremely well written characters allows you to envision the goings on while reading.

The Crocodile Makes No Sound (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 2) by N.L. Holmes. This one was just as good as book one. The author definitely has a way with words. From page one I was completely drawn into the story world that’s been created for readers. The characters are complex and easy to connect with they truly pull you right into their world. I was happy to get lost within the pages of this book. While there’s lots going on the author has a way of making it all go smoothly and never lets things get so crazy it’s confusing. It’s a well written story and the characters are well developed. I’m definitely looking forward to more from this author. Four stars and highly recommended!

The Crocodile Makes No Sound (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 2) by N.L. Holmes is a historical mystery story set in ancient Egypt and Lord Hani returns where the danger is very real for himself and his family as he searches for the truth. This story had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. NL does a great job of setting the scene with being very descriptive in the writing. Once again there is a lot going on within the story, but NL does a great job of shaping it all together. The thrills and mysteries intensify as we go along on the journey with Lord Hani to find those behind the lies and secrets.

This is the second story in the Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L. Holmes. The story has historical fiction, mysteries, and cozy mysteries. I found myself turning the pages quicker than the previous one. The story had some elements for only a certain character. This was well written so that I did not get confused but it enhanced the storylines. The characters were fully developed and true to the time period for what it was written in. The attention to detail in not only the storyline but in the character details as well. If you love history and mysteries, you will enjoy this story as well. I highly recommend reading the first book as well to get the full enjoyment of the Lord Hani series.

The Crocodile Makes No Sound by N.L. Holmes is the second book in The Lord Hani Mysteries Book series. I recommend reading the first book in the series prior to this one. In this book Lord Hani has his tons on his plate, there are multiple situations going on which affect him all at once. His character is becoming more developed as the series progresses, and I am getting more interested in learning more about him. Also, I love the fact that this is set during the times of ancient Egypt. This takes this story in a very different direction than if it took place in more contemporary days. I look forward to reading more from this series and this author in the future.

The title the Crocodile Makes No Sound reflects the entire novel. It doesn't make sense in my opinion. It was hard for me to read and stay involved in it without putting it down more than once to take a break. The author N.L. Holmes is a wonderful author but the novel itself is sort of dry. I love the author and writing style but the novels are not really my thing. What I don't understand or I think my misunderstanding of the novel is the time period it takes place in and that is what is confusing for me. N. L. Holmes uses pieces of history to write and that's what I love about the novel.

This is the second book in The Lord Hani Mysteries Series.
This was a great mystery that keeps you hooked from the first page. I love the fact that the author is knowledgeable about ancient Egypt and their beliefs and their way of life. It makes the story all the more real. You can actually imagine it happening.
There are a loads of characters in this story which at first glance can be confusing but once you start the story they all fall into place and it is easy and enjoyable to read.
