That was actually...cute?!?!
But Will here was nowhere near as perfect as Will Herondale. *swoooon*im weird, i know
But wow, I wasn't actually expecting to like HBB. After being warned, I went into this with very low expectations, so maybe that's why I ended up really liking it? ahaha who knows.

After being publicly humiliated due to a *ahem* misunderstanding at a high school party, Ellie wants nothing more than to disappear.
And what better way to do that then to run away to England? I mean, I'd totally do the same.
But really, there was just another spot open to study abroad, and so Ellie took that chance. There, she meets with three others from her school, and our charming hot British mate, Will. Of course, she automatically has a hugeobsessioncrush on him. And the other way around.
Ahhh ✨insta-love✨. Or is it really? I guess obsessing over him isn't the same as love.
Anyways, from the blurb alone it sounded like any typical contemporary romance novel but oh how more complicated and amazing it was.
I admit, I wasn't really a huge fan of Ellie -- like she was pretty cool, and her hobbies were really cute bUT HER OBSESSION WITH BOYS-
Now she's what you call boy-crazy. But Ellie did (kinda?) tone it down on the boys. Definitely a difference when you compare her from the beginning and the end. Still, there were so many moments that made me cringe ahaha and secondhand embarrassment asdsadfs poor Ellie.
And ohmygod her friends were adorkable. (they were a very diverse cast too😏) One played Quidditch, one could beat-box, and the other was such a nerd -- I loved it. They're such dorks, and that's what makes them so lovable.
I could not get enough of the places they visited in Europe. sdfdsfds I've always wanted to travel to England. The accents especially omg it's amazing. All the places to visit ughh my school should really have a study abroad in England smh I'm going to petition for one.
The ending was very satisfying as well. Loved the way the author handled it.
All in all, if you're looking for super cute read, looking for some diversity, and can handle the MC's obsession with ~de boys~ I think you'll enjoy this too!!
I still want a hot British boyfriend tho-

Pre-read Review:
I saw British and the name 'Will' and thought of the Will Herondale.
I need this. -
(This review may contain a major spoiler)
The cover is truly deceiving because if you even see my progress in reading this book, you'll know how I whined a lot.
Hot British Boyfriend started when Ellie suffered a humiliating public rejection from the boy she's been crushing on; which the video was later posted on Instagram for everyone to see to a point she has no idea how she'll face everyone at school. She then learned of a last-minute opening in her high school's study abroad program and works with her mother to make it happen. Ellie travels to England and stays at a beautiful manor that has been converted into a school.
However, her luck quickly turns when she meets Will, a charming British boy who takes her off her feet. He is everything Ellie desires, yet she is unable to open out to him. Instead, she turns to Dev, a boy from her high school whom she had never met before, for advice on how to woo Will. In the end, she must choose between keeping loyal to herself and her hot British boyfriend.
Characters:
Honestly, there's nothing to not like about Ellie. She's fun, joyful, and sweet. I adored her fondness for fairies and fairy gardens. I love seeing her hyping people up doing what they love. Most times, I am the one who hurt and felt like crying (and maybe I did cry) for seeing her getting underestimated, for having that one person who supposed to understand her, not understand her; to have insincere friend, to hide and care more about what people think and not stand for herself.
Unfortunately, she also talked and thought of boys a lot than necessary, you can guess how annoyed I am. I understand she's in high school, but I wanted to give her a good shake and tell her to be herself! I know we don't figure things out immediately at this age but she’s a fairly superficial character. I have no judgment on that (thinking about boys all the damn time), as long as they know their worths and what's best for them but having to see Ellie figuring that part is the most infuriating one.
And that's basically what made this book less enjoyable but other than that, it wasn't a bad reading at all. I love all the side characters for most; Sage, Dev, Huan, even Frank, and Miriam for how lovable and warm their characters are to Ellie.
Will may not be as likable. He's funny but unsophisticated and Dev is the classic impassioned best friend who wants to get into Ellie's good graces. Dev is hands down my favorite in this book and I enjoyed reading all the time he spent with Ellie. The study group, the Quidditch, bought her some fairy figurines because he knows she loves them or collecting acorns for her, the secret hiding place. I still think it's a scam not to have him on that cover though.
Pace and Setting:
The book is pretty slow and as much as I don't mind a predictable plot, HBB could come off a bit bland and uninteresting. Regardless of how, the setting is what makes the book more enjoyable. London is a lovely place, and I love how the author makes me thrilled to read the characters exploring the city.
On the whole, this was a light and lovely book to read (if you perceive the book correctly), but I can understand how it could not appeal to the majority of readers. You wouldn't appreciate it if you're reading it for the romance plot; but if you're reading it for a YA coming of age story about establishing true friendships, learning to be comfortable with your true self, with a little romance thrown in, you'll enjoy it a lot more. -
This book is irredeemable.
It was boring, bland, and everything I don't want in a book. The writing style was so amateur it did not read like a published book and the characters were not developed, they were just given names and bodies and the reader is magically supposed to like them even though they are not memorable. The main character ONLY thinks about boys. BOYS BOYS BOYS. That's all that runs through her mind and it was so annoying to read. This book was repetitive and brought nothing new to the table and it wasn't even semi-enjoyable, I hated every moment of it. I DNFed it because I knew that nothing could possible change my opinion of it unless a new writing style is magically adapted and the plot/characters just happens to magically gain more substance.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a review copy. All opinions are my own.

DNF @ 16%. Review maybe to come, but for now: Gave this a shot because I had a review copy, but YA romance just isn't really my thing anymore. If you're into that-- you may still love this! It just wasn't quite for me. Onto the next one!

I should have known by the title that this was not going to hold my attention. If I travelled across the world to an amazing country, I would not be fixated on snogging a hot guy. -

3.5⭐️
This was pretty cute overall. It was a super fast and easy read. I really liked the friend the group this followed, I honestly probably liked the friends more than I liked the MC.
The writing was super simple and felt like it was on the younger side of YA but the characters involved are all seniors in high school or older so that didn’t really fit the writing style.
To me, this was a slightly less enjoyable version of Anna and the French Kiss.
It was still a fun read but it didn’t stand out from other YA contemporaries I’ve read. -
3.5 stars
Perfect for when you need a nice fluffy read but not super high quality. (ALSO I'm trying a new review format so let me know what you think!)
This book is great for fans of Kasie West, Morgan Matson, and other YA Contemporary Romance lovers.
Characters:
ELLIE
Ah, Ellie. Such a strong character with great potential that I just didn't quite click with. I didn't love her carelessness at the beginning, and it just really bothered me throughout the whole book, not sure why. She had a lot of character growth, and I ended up liking her somewhat, but she just never really worked out for me.
WILL
I DESPISE YOU WILL. WORST LOVE INTEREST EVER. YUCK. BLECH. PFFT. That's all I got. Pretty sure dear Jimmy Fallon does it justice though. ⬇
DEV
Dev was pretty likable and I'm glad He wasn't highly developed, however, which made me a little bit sad but overall was pretty good.
SAGE
Well, well, well Sage. You are a QUEEN. I wish she was real because we would totally be best friends. A wonderful friend to Ellie (once she got to know her), Sage was smart, kind, supportive, and my favorite character.
Plot:
The plot was actually mostly prominent for a YA contemporary, since usually the characters just float along doing nothing the whole time in most books (I mean, it's true). There was some minor suspense, there was drama, and while it wasn't the most thrilling, it was great for a calm, lovable book. There was also a lot of humor, making it even more enjoyable!
Overall:
While the characters weren't perfect, there was a pretty good plotline and appealing components *cough cough sarcasm + humor* *cough cough England* and I really enjoyed it as a whole! -
Let it be stated for the record that I am not this book's target audience, and I am aware of that. This is a YA contemporary romance about a teenage high school student. I am a 24 years old adult. I graduated high school seven years ago. Maybe I would have liked this book seven year ago. Then again, a good and enjoyable book should be good and enjoyable at any age. Unfortunately, I didn't very much enjoy this one the way I'd hoped.
As the title might imply, this book a girl (Ellie) and her hot British boyfriend (Will). She got into an exclusive study abroad program for high achieving and intelligent students, despite being neither high achieving or academically intelligent, and spends the entire trip chasing after Will, a British guy she lied to about everything, from her name to the fact that she's not a college student. Ellie then spends a good portion of the book failing classes because instead of studying, she's pretending to be interested in Will's hobbies. She then spends the other part of the book wondering if maybe she like her friend, Dev, instead.
Basically, this book is about a young girl who only thinks about boys.
I can't really tell you much about Ellie's personality. She liked making fairy gardens, which is cute and I like that she had a hobby she's passionate about. Other than that, I can't tell you much. She was willing to hide everything about herself so a hot British guy would like her. Ellie's boy focused mentality didn't change or grow until the very end of the book. And even then, she she was still technically thinking about boys.
And I just wasn't feeling it.
Another issue I had was that this book felt long. Physically, it's a fairly short to average length novel, only 336 pages. But reading it felt eternal. And there's nothing worse than when a book you aren't loving feels like it goes on forever. Every time I put it down I almost forgot to pick it back up.
In the end, I didn't really enjoy this one. I don't have much else to say.

Let me start off by saying—I am not a huge YA fan what so ever. I’m more into the steam and angst. However, this book was sugary sweet. It had a great ending and though not 100% predictable you kinda knew what was going to happen. It’s a great coming of age story and Ellie really growing up into the person she wants to be versus what she thinks everyone else wants her to be. She has cute and quirky hobbies that she hides to seem “cooler” but realizes if someone loves you (friend or romantic interest) they will love you for all of you and what you stand for. It was a really great debut novel from this author! Also, it’s set in England so—bonus points! -
Reading Hot British Boyfriend is like injecting pure joy directly into your veins. This is a sweet, swoony book about finding love and, more importantly, yourself. Perfect for fans of Anna and the French Kiss!
-
Adorable! Loved the whole friend group, especially Sage.
-
"Forget Andy. I want a hot British boyfriend."
Will ??? like why do you even like her
Nefasto gente, no lo lean a menos que les guste sufrir.
1.5 de 5 estrellas. -
What a cute YA romance. The setting was amazing. What a charming book!
Hot British Boyfriend is a Young Adult Contemporary Romance. The narrator is high school student Ellie/Elle (1st person POV).
The story starts in Washington, DC. Something happens to Ellie that changes things in her life.
Her school is doing a study abroad trip to England. But it's only for honor students.
There was so much to like about this book. I just loved the friend group that Ellie made (Dev, Sage and Huan). And the whole idea of a hot British boyfriend was such a fun thing.
I loved the whole greenhouse/gardening/fairy garden aspect of the book. I don't see this in too many books. And it was just such a fun thing to read about.
But my favorite thing was definitely the setting. I loved getting to see different parts of England. And I absolutely loved the extra trip that they took.
Overall, this was an enjoyable book. I liked the romance. And it was such a quick cute read.

This book was just straight up adorable. That's it. That's the review.
Just kidding.
But seriously! I know I read a lot of darker, heavier books, but I would not be able to get through them if I didn't have something like this book to break them up. Sometimes you just need some fluff, you know?
After a horrifying public rejection by her crush, Ellie Nichols does what any girl would do: she flees the country. To be more precise, she joins her high school’s study abroad trip to England. When Ellie meets Will, a gorgeous and charming Brit, she strikes up a bargain with Dev, an overachieving classmate who she’s never clicked with, but who does seem to know a lot about the things Will is interested in—if he helps her win over her crush, then she’ll help him win over his. But even as Ellie embarks on a whirlwind romance, one that takes her on adventures to some of England’s most beautiful places, she still needs to figure out if this is actually the answer to all her problems…and whether the perfect boyfriend is actually the perfect boy for her.
Hot British Boyfriend wasn't perfect. But the charm of it is that it doesn't need to be! Sure, the main character got a little bit annoying, but I liked her overall. She seemed just a little too fixated on boysboysboysboys, but that calmed down around the middle of the novel. I did like her path to accepting herself and learning that others can accept her for the way she is. Mixed bag of feelings on Ellie, I guess.
But DEV! I love Dev. Can I have a Dev? He's a nerd and a Potterhead. Must I go on? He's just so sweet...I don't know if I can say any more without going on a full-blown rant, so I'll just cut myself off here.
The writing style matched the type of book perfectly, but it was a little obvious in places. It said that Dev looked at Ellie with longing, and then she completely brushed it off. But the readers know now! Ellie can angst, but we know we can't suffer with her. Which I guess might not be such a bad thing, but NOT THE POINT.
I loved the setting! I've only been to England once, but it was magical. London is absolutely beautiful! I loved reading about it. It almost made me feel like I was across the pond again!
May I just take a moment to fangirl over all the Jane Austen and Harry Potter references? It made my day. I love JA's books and Harry Potter was literally my childhood! (Shoutout to all the other Huffles reading this review!)
I had such a blast with this book! It was so much fun. Just think--this is only the author's debut novel! I can't wait to see what else she has in store! -
Let's state some facts:
1. I love England - it's my favorite place in the world
2.
Anna and the French Kiss is one of my all time favorite books.
So based on the above, I was told this was the book for me. But I had also heard some not so great things about it. So I went in neutral, think of me as Switzerland.
So
Hot British Boyfriend follows Ellie as she runs from humiliation all the way to England. While there, she falls for a "hot" British boy and begins this whirlwind romance that, let's be honest, we all saw a fleeting. But Ellie is young and determined to prove that she's moved past her public rejection. But of course, Ellie is blind to what she actually has in front of her and only cares about this dream. So much, that there were times where I didn't want her to get her happily ever after because she was so selfish.
Words to live by: Don't ditch your friends for a boy (or girl).
There were parts of this book that I think I criticized a little more because I'm older than the target demographic. Like the girl who gave up a chance to study abroad for a semester because she got a boyfriend - like I get the teenagers attitude, but what parent is like, yeah that's cool. And then there's Ellie who goes to England with the AP honors kids and is shocked when there's actual school work. Umm...what did you expect on a school trip?
Honestly, Ellie as a whole was just not my favorite. The reason I liked this book was her friend group and the adventures overseas. The friends that she made were just the best. I almost wish it was an entire book about their exploits because then I wouldn't have wanted to rip my hair out at Ellie's antics.
I will say that I liked how this didn't really go the route of perfect English boy solves all problems. Because let's be honest, he was kind of a hot mess.
Overall, it was cute. There were some really adorable moments and there were ones where I just wanted to rip my hair out at how immature Ellie was (but then I remembered she was a teenager). A super quick read and one that made me want to book a flight to London asap. -
June 23, 2020: This cover is TOO cute. Too cute.
-
hm. yes. this was, in fact. A Book.
-
the mc is so obsessed with boys i literally cant stand it. i HATED that shes always thinking about boys. i mean i too would love to have a hot british boyfriend but not to the extent that i would think about them 24/7 man thats insane. having a chance to study abroad means a lot to me and she was just out there spending time with the dude like shes not supposed to be studying GIRLE YOU'RE STILL IN HS THERES A LOT OF DUDES OUT THERE (unfortunately) THEY WONT SUDDENLY VANISH !!!!! the only character i loved here was dev because he was such a sweetheart
-
Unfortunately had to DNF this one. Going into it, I was so excited because I was in the mood to read something like this. But the writing was almost middle-grade level, and the characters have absolutely NO DEPTH. It isn't worth anyone's time.

A Book Shrew
That sounds kind of harsh, but I admit this wasn't as memorable as I'd hoped. In fact, I found myself wanting more the entire time. Don't get me wrong, this was cute. Downright adorable from start to finish. After new kid Ellie experiences a truly mortifying public slip-up that's caught on video, she takes the first chance she can to study in England for one semester. She's not a 4.0 GPA, AP class-taking student, but she's going to give it her best shot because this is a much needed fresh start. And what better way to show everyone at home that she's totally cool by finding herself a hot British boyfriend. And Will most certainly is hot.
With a bit of a bad boy air and more money than she could ever know what to do with, Ellie quickly falls for Will. And I suppose teenage me would have too, if his appearance on the cover is anything to go off. He spoils her profusely with huge floral arrangements and fancy dinners, but he doesn't like the same things she does. Ellie certainly doesn't care for cricket, but she's going to learn no matter what it takes. This is a story about a young woman discovering who she is and what she needs in a relationship, but there's also a really sweet message about finding the friends you deserve.
My problem with YA contemporary is that I find it rather predictable, and with this one I knew exactly how it would end from the summary alone. That sucked a little because I wanted to be strung along in a different direction for a bit. I did hope for more English/London stuff as I made the assumption the school was in London, not Northampton. We see very little of England aside from the school, one day in London, and the inside of a few pubs and markets. There is also a trip to Venice that was described so well, I wish it had been applied more to the English setting. I think my favourite part of this book was Ellie and her new friends. Sage, Dev and Huan were such delightful people and I adored every scene with them.
What bothered me the most is that we are still reading narratives of teenage girls who feel they must lie in order for a boy to like them. They pretend they don't like things they love, force themselves to learn things they couldn't care less about, and suppress the absolute weirdest and most wonderful parts of themselves. I never feel my teenage self represented in these stories because I never dreamed of putting in that much effort for a boy who in the end is not worth it. I really want YA fiction that stops pigeon-holing the girl who is confident in being herself and proud of what she likes into the role of side character. They're always the voice of reason and I want those girls front and centre, damn it!
The cover was way too cute to resist, and while I thought the story itself was adorable too, I just wanted something different. -
“Do something you don’t care about that makes you lots of money. You can do everything you love on the side.”
I can understand this and currently am doing this. I still have pride in my job but it doesn’t stress me out as much I used to. I definitely most things on the side. This is a definite YA romance to read in Feb 2021!
I love the traveling I wish I could travel and I understand why people don’t want to read this due to the current world climate. My favorite parts about this book were the side characters and their different hobbies!!! Fairy gardens! Quidditch!
This ended on such a high note I loved it! Thank you so much Harper Collins for this book! -
This was like reading a really fun, cliché, cheesy teen movie and I had a blast. This was such a comforting book to read, because you go in with certain expectations and all of them are met and played out in the ways that you expect. A great read if your in the mood for a ya romance.

DNF @ 50%
I was so excited for this one, so it hurts me to have to DNF it. The characters are all so bland and there’s not enough character development to keep me interested. Will is literally just a hot British boyfriend--that’s it. I also don’t like Ellie enough to care about how she might learn from her mistakes later on in the book. This book feels very MG to me, and I just wish there was more depth to it. Unfortunately, this one is a miss for me. -
Thanks to Harper 360 for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
2.5 stars
This is a light-hearted coming-of-age story about young girl who, after a mild social faux pas at a party, decides to go to the UK for a semester of school to escape her friends and embarrassment.
Harper 360 were kind enough to send me an e-ARC of this so I read some of it on ebook and some on audio. The audio was enjoyable but I found the narrator's accents distracting at times, which took my out of the story.
Ellie is a fun, caring person who loves the UK and dreams of visiting. She begins the novel with her priorities slightly out of order, caring more about social status and getting a boyfriend than her school work or making genuine friendships. But when an embarrassing video of her goes viral, she decided to join study abroad programme last minute to get away from the harassment.
I didn't mind Ellie has a character, but there were times when she took her friends for granted and acted selfishly, which was frustrating. She seemed more interested in finding a boyfriend than studying, and I wanted to sit down and have an intervention with her on multiple occasions.
I didn't particularly warm to Will, the love interest, as something felt off about him from the start. The further we get into the novel, the more we realise that Will's only interested in his own life and takes his privileges for granted. It was frustrating to watch Ellie put all her faith in Will and hide her personality just to please him when they weren't well matched at all.
Dev was probably my favourite character and I wish we'd got a more in-depth look into his backstory. We learn a little about his family, career goals, and hobbies, but I just wanted ~more~ of all these aspects. There's a great scene where he gives Ellie the intervention/wake up call that she needs (and the one I'd been wanting to give her), so I liked him even more after that.
The romance didn't really do anything for me because I didn't trust Will for a lot of the novel, so I wasn't invested in his and Ellie's relationship. But there's a nice shake up (although not a surprising one) in the final few chapters and I did like the happy ending. I would have liked the third-act conflict to come a little earlier so we could have more time for the resolution to play out, but that's just personal preference.
