A fine Brundage cover for C.L. Moore’s “The Black God’s Kiss.” I read the story not long ago in a 100th anniversary of WT collection, so I didn’t revisit it here, but it furthers Moore’s reputation as one of the magazine’s all-time best contributors. Readers still seem to have no notion that a woman is creating these amazing stories.
The second half of Howard’s “The People of the Black Circle” really kicks into gear too. Clark Ashton Smith’s “The Seven Geases,” a favorite of my younger days, strikes me as more of a shaggy shoggoth story this time around though the language is amazing as always.
The Trail of the Cloven Hoof continues to amuse and Manly Wade Wellman contributes “At the Bend of the Trail,” a story that gives no hint whatsoever of the author’s later, remarkable stories. Paul Ernst’s “The Sleeper” – a story of a man in a rooming house in the room next door to a mad inventor -- is minor but effective. The rest of the contents are all passable, no real dogs here.
