Captain Samuels:
We were pirates. Er, traders. Yet even we were repulsed by women being sold like chattel.
But I couldn’t stand by while her father sold her, treating her as if she were worthless.
She was a sweet, hard working girl.
Her delicate blue eyes called to me even more than the sea itself.
The only thing I wanted now was to keep her safe. In my arms. In my bed.
My biggest fear was that I might hurt the tiny lass. I could never let that happen.
Flora:
A complete stranger asked me what I wanted. I’d never been asked that question before.
The Captain was the first man to ask me to speak my mind.
I made my choice – to sail away for a life of adventure rather than stay under my father’s thumb.
The world was bigger out on the open sea.
The colors were brighter.
The feelings were… Strangely deep and powerful.
I just couldn’t tell if the Captain felt the same.
He was so kind to me, treating me as if I were precious.
Every time he touched me, I wanted to feel like I was his to enjoy.
As my life finally became my own, I began to make my own rules.
I'd learn to speak up for what I need.

Author’s Note: I write contemporary romance. How the blazes did a pirate tale appear? Look, sometimes these things just happen. If this doesn’t float your boat, sail on past. Or raise the flag and come aboard for a sweet and steamy adventure!
Even More Important Note: If you’re looking for perfect historical accuracy… Er, keep looking. This is fiction. Please consult history books for precision. This is heart fluttering, pearl clutching, knicker dampening romance.
***
This shy girl / alpha male romance is a standalone novel.
No cliffhangers, no cheating, and a sweet HEA.

A more apt name for this book would be ‘Helped By Friendly Sailors Who Respected Her Virtue’.
This was the lamest pirate book I’ve ever read. You can absolutely tell this was written by an author of contemporary romance, though to be fair she does have a disclaimer saying this is not supposed to be historically accurate, and it surely isn’t. But the accuracy aside, this was fanciful and flowery, I felt like it was people pretending to be pirates at a local fair. The language was its own thing, it wasn’t contemporary and it wasn’t historical, it was just weird. This book is what people who make fun of romance think romance it all about: cheesy, corny, sappy and prosey. This is not sweet or steamy as advertised, it’s more childish and nauseating. Not one thing about this book was ‘knicker dampening’ ffs.
The cover and the title are very misleading, this is not the pirate book you are expecting. Honestly, this isn’t worth reading. Take my advice and find something else, this wasn’t good. Check my highlights, you will see exactly what I mean. -
What a great story!
I really loved this book! I appreciate that the author was clear in the blurb that this was not a true historical romance but more so a blend of things.
Flora really found her strength and self worth in this story after spending her life being beaten down and being treated so poorly. It took a band of pirates to treat her right and show her how to embrace life.
I absolutely adored the familial relationship between the ship's crew. They took Flora under their wings and treated her like a beloved sister (well except for Captain lol 😉 ) and I found myself rooting for their HEAs as well. -
Short and sweet. No angst. No pining. It was a very pleasant surprise.
This story is a tribute to any woman who has been through difficulty and faced a turning point in her life whether by choice or forced upon her by circumstance. This is a story of affirmation, acceptance, and love. The found family was an extra bonus.

My Thoughts:
This book was ok. I liked it more in the beginning but it felt like a lot of the same thing after a while and just wasn't quite strong enough to make a lasting impact. It was sweet and steamy & short and easy to read and was a good option for me to pick up during a pirate themed readathon.

The title of the book makes it seem like it's some kind of slave / master story with maybe a reverse harem theme , and I wasn't interested.
However I still read the blurb just in case. Because it isn't the first time a book has a title that can easily be misinterpreted.
Thankfully the blurb caught my attention and clearly depicted a story that was in high contrast to its title.
In the end, I gave this book a chance, and I don't regret it. It was a sweet love story. With barely any drama. It was a cosy read with a slow burn romance.
Flora was such a sweet character and she deserved to blossom. He father was an evil bastard, but at least he did something right when he sold his daughter to the Captain. Flora was sweet, kind and smart, and being surrounded by the sailors aloud her to come out her shell and blossoming into a beautiful and lovely woman.
The Captain was just a sweet. He was a great character , and I fell in love with him the moment he saw Flora and wanted to protect her and take care of her.
The ship's crew was a good bunch. Everybody was welcoming toward Flora. They taught her, complimented her and made her feel like part of the crew and family.
Would I recommend this book ? Yes. If you're looking for a calm and easy romance this is for you. -
I can only describe this book as a wish fulfillment fantasy type story. It worked very well as a nice quick escape from reality. However, I had some issues with it:
- The word use in the beginning was distracting. It made the sentences sound clunky and forced me to reread a few of them.
- To call this knicker-dampening is ... not really true. I've read this author's other work and I can say for a fact she has much hotter slow burn under her belt. This was much more romantically sweet than sexy.
I'm also not sure if the main character can be described as a Mary Sue, although I guess that comes with the wish fulfillment genre territory. She was humble enough that it wasn't entirely annoying, though.
All in all, I liked this story, but I wouldn't reread it, and it certainly wasn't amazing, so I'm going to have to go with a solid 3 stars.
My rating system: * I didn't like this ** it was meh *** I liked this **** I really liked this and would reread ***** this book is the bomb and I will sleep with it in my bed.
This is based on an ARC from booksprout -
I almost didn't want to count it as a book thst I read because its emmbarasing that I read it
Also this is the worst writing I've ever read -
I need a pirate, please!
Wow! For an author who writes "contemporary" HT sure does a great job with a pirate love story! I wanted to read this after an ARC reading her other historical fiction (The Princess and the Warrior). I greatly enjoyed this story, and would be happy to see her do other period pieces! -
I was thoroughly entertained by this, but it was a little too unbelievable. Like, I love how sweet the whole crew was to her, but it was way too much suspension of disbelief to think an entire crew of pirates would respect her the way they did.
The steamy parts were really good, but it grated on my nerves a bit the way he would talk to her during them; like she was a child? Kind of? -
I love this story, and I love the idea of sailing on a pirate ship. This story made my heart happy. I picked it up on whim thinking I might not like it. But I'm glad I read it. I loved it so much. 5 stars for me, and can't wait to read more about this story. I like the romance in this book. A fantastic read. I don't know what else to say about this book, but that I loved it.

A well written story that held my interest until the end. I enjoyed seeing Captain Samuels and Flora's story come together. I will be watching to see if more books come out in this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A lovely read
A lovely light hearted read. After being continuously beaten and ridiculed by her father, Flora is luckily sold to a kind-hearted pirate and his crew. She soon becomes part of the family and falls in love with the captain. A HEA story. -
Sweet story but kind of uninteresting and I didn’t really connect to their love story.
-
I think it’s super cute. I really enjoyed the whole story. It kept it cute and interesting the whole time. Definitely going to read more from this author!
-
Simple and sweet story, with only a little drama along the way.

4.75⭐️
I would read a 300 page book about these characters. Everything from the romance to the found family all just made my heart happy!
I do wish there was a discreet paperback cover lol. -
Its a nice little read. I was craving a pirate book. Honestly, i wish that it was told only in floras pov and that we got to see more converaations but its fine. I love her relationship with larry!
