Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues #1 (of 4) Reviews

This was really cool - basically bridges the gap between the first Karate Kid film and the Cobra Kai series', via Johnny's (unreliable) narration. Great art. Fun story. Cool references. And great storytelling.

Cobra Kai has taken over my life, so this feels just about right.

I purchased this series for our library before even reading it for myself. I think the tv show Cobra Kai has done really well in continuing the Karate Kid story and I was beyond eager to read this series. I assumed the book series would just recap the television series, but I was surprised to find it contained even more of Johnny's back story, and even includes some of his perspective from several scenes in the original movie series. I gave this review 4/5 stars because I enjoyed the content and I thought the illustration style was unique. However, I was mildly offended to see how Mr. Miyagi was portrayed in the series... In the original films, Pat Morita speaks using broken English but his character does not seem ignorant or less-than simply because he is an immigrant who speaks with an accent. I was very surprised to see Mr. Miyagi portrayed as passive and seemingly incapable of speaking English in this series, and that's what prevented me from awarding it 5 stars. I tried to think about how maybe this portrayal of Mr. Miagi makes sense if we are seeing him through Johnny's eyes... But I'm not sure -- it just didn't sit well with me.
