The NHL’s been at my door since I was 18.
But I’d never leave the Swedish Hockey League—
Not while raising my little brother.
But now he’s grown and the Carolina Reapers show up with my greatest weakness:
Langley Pierce, their new head of PR.

I’ve never been able to say no to her.
She’s fierce, independent, and the sexiest woman I’ve ever met.
She also has a stubborn streak wider than my entire country.

One comment from her smart mouth about never dating again, and I propose.

No, really, I actually propose:
A six-month marriage contract in exchange for signing with the Reapers.
I want to date this woman so badly that I’m going to marry her first.
I’ll use each day to show her how a queen should be treated.

Our wedding day started a countdown I’m powerless to stop,
And the faster the months fly, the harder I fall.
She’s sworn she’ll never choose a man over her career,
And I promised never to ask her to.
Until I’m forced to.

How can we move forward when we started this whole thing backwards?
If I can’t convince her this marriage is anything but fake—
The next document we sign will crush us both.

Welcome to the Carolina Reapers, Samantha Whiskey’s newest hockey series where the chill of the ice meets sultry southern nights.

    4 Solid Stars and would have been higher if not for Langley

    I really loved this quick read. It was filled with all of my favs from the past series and I FLOVED Axel....I mean he was sheer perfection. Now Langley, hmmmmm, I am really on the fence with her. She annoyed me to no end but yet I did like her too. I guess my feelings for her ran up and down BUT the twist that came when she "hurt" him and YES for me, she just made the wrong decision.....that part really made me kinda mad if I am honest. He was always so ALL in and her, she would act it one minute and yet ran cold the next, well maybe not too cold, lol, but lukewarm and he didn't deserve it.

    For me, I just wished some things had played out differently but hey, it's all good because I am still a fan and plan on reading the series:)

  • Ⓐlleskelle - That ranting lady ッ

    I'm partial to hockey gods in my romance, as such, Axel really made it on my list of swooning fictional athletes. This was also my first Samantha Whiskey and my interest for her other books is definitely piqued.

    "Axel" totally it the spot for me as light and sexy sports romance.
    A really good hero a little gruff around the edges determined to prove a hard as nails heroine they're made for each other. Axel is patient but he's not against using leverage to help his case. Marriage of convenience anyone?
    Light, sexy, steamy and a little bit angsty, Axel made a Carolina Reapers fan out of me!

    This was the first book I've read by this author, and I couldn't have been more pleased with this sexy romance! Axel is a fast-paced, easy reading experience. Ms. Samantha Whiskey's writing style is smooth and flowing, making this an engaging story. The plot is believable and the characters are great. There is wonderful chemistry and a smoldering passion between Axel and Langley, and I thoroughly enjoyed their journey. They were the perfect fit for each other. I loved the character of Axel, the Swedish ultra-sexy giant hockey player! He had such wisdom and unconditional love. I was rooting for him to win Langley’s devotion from the start! A wonderful hero that you will fall in love with. If you like a heartwarming love story with good depth of character, sizzling chemistry, and a great plot, then you will enjoy Axel as much as I did. Overall rating : A solid 4 stars!

  • Topastro

    I'm a bit torn on this book. Axel was perfection but Langley was making me want to pull my hair out. Axel has always loved Langley and when he finally has his chance to show her, he does not waste it. After taking care of his younger brother and putting all offers from the NHL off he finally agrees but on the condition that Langley marry him so he can finally date her (a little silly, but I liked that.) He doesn't care about the millions just the chance to make the career driven Langley see she can have a thriving career and a man who appreciates her. Axel was swoon worthy and I don't even like that word but he truly was. I loved his big heart and by the halfway point all I could think of was that he deserved better.

    Langley was intended to be determined & strong with a focus on her job but it made it nearly impossible to connect with her. I felt as a MC she was boring, cold, & self centered. She really didn't redeem herself. Like damn girl you need to grovel! I found wanting Axel to dump her which is the opposite of what I want when reading romance.

    2.5 Stars
    Lots of spoilers ahead, because I need to vent...
    Honestly, I would've rated this book much higher if the female lead hadn't been so horrible. The story itself wasn't bad, and the writing was a good style, but the characters and history sunk this book.

    Plot: Strike one, this is actually a spin-off series from her Seattle Sharks series. That's fine and I love a good spin-off series, but authors need to decided it the series can act as a standalone. With this being book one and having no mention of another series, I thought I could dive into this without reading any of her other work. I was quickly proven wrong. Apparently these two characters have a lot of history in the other series, and it's never actually described in this current book. We jumped right into the middle of their relationship and never got any of their background. If an author is going to do that, then there needs to be something in the summary that informs the reader that they should read the Seattle series first. Without any of their history, the whole marriage agreement comes off as really weird.

    Hero: I loved Axel. If he had an equally likable match, I would've been able to overlook the plot problems. He was so caring and devoted. He was basically a dream boyfriend and even during the main problem at the end of the book, he was always in the right and I could always see his reasoning. He clearly loved Langley and always put her first. He spent most of his life raising and caring for his younger brother, putting off his dreams of playing in the NHL. He only agrees to leave his now grown up brother and his life in Sweden on the condition that Langley marry him so he can finally date her (very Proposal-esque) He doesn't care about the money or the fame, he only wants a chance to date Langley.

    Heroine:
    I HATED Langley. I don't believe I'm exaggerating when I say she is the worst. I get that the author was trying to make her a strong and career driven woman, but she was just selfish. She put her job in front of everyone and was just trash. In the first half of the book, we get to see Langley try and use Axel for sex, even though he wants to really get to know each other on a deeper emotional level. And the second half was spent watching Axel prove his love for her over and over and she still couldn't say she loved him. All I could think throughout this whole book was that Axel deserved better.

    Ending: WHERE WAS THE GROVELING??! Oh wait, there was a little bit of groveling....from Axel!! All Axel asked of her was to come support him while his brother was facing a serious injury. He spent the whole book putting her first and the first time he asks for her support she refuses. And while he's in Sweden watching his brother face numerous surgeries and an almost fatal blood clot, Langley doesn't even call to check in. And for some reason, all of their mutual friends seem to side with her?!?! When he is complaining that Langley hasn't even called to see how he is, his friends have the audacity to say the phone works both ways. And then at the press conference he stands up for her not joining him in Sweden because he's a good guy and doesn't want to throw her under the bus (which she completely deserved). They only get back together because she says sorry once and then finally tells him she loves him.

    Overall: Axel was amazing, Langley ruined the book. I don't know if I'll be able to read any more of this author's work because this was such a horrible introduction to her. The only reason this book got any stars from me was because of Axel.

  • Courtney

    When I started this book, I didn't realize it was a spin off of another series. Because of this, I unfortunately missed out on any relationship building that occurred between the MCs before the start of this book. I'm not sure if that would have helped me believe in this relationship more or not, but since I didn't particularly think Langley and Axel worked well together, it might have been better to start with the Seattle Shark series to see just what Axel saw in her.

    The only reason I stuck with this book can be summed up in one word - - AXEL!

    description

    Seriously, if you wanted to create the perfect man, you could just use him as a template. Sweet, caring, generous, understanding, athletic, and sexy.

    description

    Axel's only problem is that he's in love with a terrible child-woman who is ridiculously self-obsessed and really not ready to be in a relationship with anyone. Look, I get it. The author wanted to write a driven career woman, but the things that Langley worries about are just so small and unimportant. Like, she worries about being late to a New Year's Eve party and how Axel will react (Newsflash, he's a grown man and doesn't care).

    description

    But then when there's a serious problem, and he begs her to have his back, she's just like, "Nope, got my own shit. Bye."

    description

    She could have redeemed herself by actually calling Axel while he was off dealing with this stuff, but she didn't. Why? Because she's a CHILD! It's just so ridiculous. I don't care if she regretted her choices later, and she has mother / ex-boyfriend issues. If you're an adult in a relationship and you hurt your partner, you call. Especially if they're going through some shit.

    I don't know why Axel took her back. It would have been a better ending if he left her.

    description

    Honestly, there's just not enough given on Langley's side for this to not be a one-sided relationship. Axel does all the heavy lifting, and she's just along for the ride. The only time she seems to actually give a crap is when he's going to leave, so her attempts to win him back don't seem genuine.

    If there had been a bit more to the story and Langley had grown more sooner, this could have been a 4 or 5 star book for me, but mostly I just feel bad that Axel got stuck with this woman.

    Read Grinder First

    I reread this book once I finished the Seattle shark series sand it is amazing!! The first time I read it was a struggle falling for the characters... but now... fantastic!! Ready for the next!!

    Loved Axel and Langley!!! Can't wait for more of these Carolina Reapers.

  • Shelby

    Axel plays for the Swedish Hockey League and has no desire to leave. That is, until Carolina Reaper’s PR rep, Langley, knocks on his door, offering him an enticing NHL contract. The two of them met a couple years back when Langley was fresh out of a relationship and Axel was her tour guide and friend. Ever since, Axel’s had a crush on her. Knowing that she isn’t interested in dating, Axel makes Langley an offer: if she marries him for 6-months, Axel will sign on with the Carolina Reapers. This will finally be his chance to date Langley...what could go wrong with dating your wife?

    Axel by Samantha Whiskey is book 1 in the Carolina Reapers series. I had no clue this series was a spinoff of the Seattle Sharks series, so I felt I missed out on so much of the backstory. It took me a long time to feel the connection between Langley and Axel because I think their history was played out in the previous series. Axel made this book for me: sexy, kind, didn’t care about the money, family oriented. Langley, on the other hand had some maturing to do and she wasn’t the most likable. I’m thinking I might go back and read the Seattle Sharks series before continuing with this series, as I do enjoy a good hockey romance. 3.5/5 stars.

  • READ ME ROMANCE

    The Carolina Reapers is a new spin off series based on the very successful and titillating Seattle Sharks series featuring a professional hockey team. It is written by hockey guru and writer extraordinaire Samantha Whiskey.

    We first met the heroine and heroine, Axel and Langley in the Seattle Sharks series, and I couldn’t wait to read their story. I happen to do public relations for a living so I always enjoy when the career is featured in a book and Samantha nailed it. Langley is talented, dedicated, and a real-life fixer for the players and management of her new team, the South Carolina Reapers. As public relations director, she is one of only a few women in this position in professional sports and I really admired her skill set and the respect she had earned.

    A year ago in the book world, she went to Sweden on a business trip and first met Axel, the hero of this story. She was coming out of a long-term relationship and he was just what she needed. And I am not talking about S E X. He was a friend and confident, patient and understanding, made her laugh, and understood when she needed a shoulder to cry on. He was in awe of Langley and did everything he could to build her up with not just his words, but with his actions. She was fierce, sarcastic, and at times, a bit too stubborn for her own good. But none of us are perfect and we often act a certain way to guard our bruised hearts and ego, and Langley was no exception.

    Axel, the namesake of this book, was a hero in every way. A 6’4” Nordic hottie with a giant selfless heart, raised his younger brother, Tage. Axel was not materialistic, was a talented professional athlete in his home country of Sweden, all while remaining humble and non-materialistic. He was a loyal friend and not a player with the ladies. He only had eyes for our sweet heroine and negotiated a deal in order to get to know her better–she marries him for six months and he will uproot his life, move to the US, and play hockey for her new expansion team. (This tidbit is in the teaser ads so I am not giving away any spoilers.)

    This book is about their coming together as husband and wife, and watching their relationship build slowly over time. She wanted to speed things up in the bedroom, but he wanted the real deal and for her to fall in love with him as deeply as he was with her before they could become intimate. Quite the switch! It broke my heart a bit how she was unsure and how they were both so vulnerable. They could have communicated better, which was a bit frustrating at times, but if they did the book would have been over much too quickly. I really did enjoy the character development and each time they were together, and routed for them the entire time.

    My favorite scenes in the entire book were not their sexy alone times, although they were very steamy as their chemistry was insane, but the two times he was being interviewed by the press and his honest, direct, and emotional answers to the reporters’ questions. He shut them down and said the most absolute perfect, panty melting–I love and respect my wife, responses. I was so impressed and thought he could do no wrong. He showed her over and over again how he felt about her, and it was very emotional when she finally let down her guard and learned to trust what they had was real.

    I loved how some of the former Shark players, including his best friend Lukas from Sweden, and Gage McPherson, the former Shark’s team captain who is now the head coach of the Carolina Reapers, and their wives or girlfriends, made appearances in this new series. Please note that Axel can be read as a stand-alone as all of the characters are identified so it’s easy to follow. I can’t wait to read more of this new series! Axel is a must read!!

  • Joyce

    This was painful. I just could not care about the characters. I never got into the story at all.

    It’s about Axel, who had an enormous crush in Langley after spending two weeks getting to know her a year ago. Apparently after she went back home after visiting Sweden, he harbored this crush which manifested into him loving her despite not seeing or hearing from her all year.

    When her job needed her to recruit him onto the team, she was used as bait to ask him to join because apparently his thing for her was known. So he maneuvered the deal into her having to marry her for six months. This was so they could date (she had sworn off dating) and he could earn a chance with her.

    He refused to make it about sex and there’s supposed to be a lot of sexual chemistry and frustration but it just made me yawn. Honestly.

    He’s supposed to be the epitome of a perfect man. I think it just goes to show me that perfection needs flaws. The flaws that create drama are what makes things entertaining.

  • Kylee

    I am in LOVE, not puppy love, not a little school girl crush, I mean hearts in my eyes, sweaty palms, butterflies in my stomach type of love. Axel might be just a character to some, but this Swedish Viking owned my heart from the very first page. Axel and Langley’s story is one that will at times take you to the peak but then have you falling to the bottom. It is emotional, captivating and at times will have you edgy. This first book in the Carolina Reapers series will leave the next books with a hard act to follow. Axel will make you swoon and you will hurt for Langley at how hard it is for her to trust someone with her heart. So much more than just a hockey romance, it is intimate, sexy, passionate and at times heartbreaking. A story filled with so many emotions that your heart and soul will be on overload. At the end of this book one thing will be certain, Axel and Langley will be planted so far under your skin that there will be no letting them go.

  • Dela

    I loved Axel and Langley together. They had great chemistry and cared for each other throughout the book. I really enjoyed reading their story... my only issue was with Langley... as much as I love her character I couldn't help but be so angry that she was so blind and closed off to things. I understand her reasoning for why she does and thinks the way she does but damn. I also know that Axel knew the way she was but sis wouldn't give the man an inch. She made no compromise and expected the world and that was sucky to see because in every book she was empathetic and intuitive to her friends but her she was cold and blocked off to the one person giving her everything. She made up for it yeah, I just wish that the whole book hadn't been Axel chasing Langley who put in little to no effort until the very end when she almost lost everything.

    It was fine, it just wasn’t for me.

    Like if I’m ever caught up on my tbr then sure maybe I’d add the rest of the series to it, but I highly doubt I’ll ever catch up. There are much better options to read.

    It’s weird because I do normally really like hockey books but this one idk, the vibes just weren’t there. Literally over half the book and nothing had happened, I think it was like 63% before any sort of conflict happened. Maybe I just need to stick to dark romance.

    Smut was good though, however, very limited at the start.

  • Renée

    Axel by Samantha Whisky is a hockey sports romance that follows the story of Axel and Langley. This is the first book in the Carolina Reapers series, which is a spin-off to the Seattle Sharks series.

    Well damn…Axel really knows what he wants and he’s not afraid to jump in head first, and what he wants is Langley.

    And Langley wants to keep her new job, but she’s also been hurt badly in the past. But Axel has captured her heart and mind for so long now, that she’s not sure she can resist what he has to offer.

    These two had chemistry the first time they met, which continues to grow throughout the story. I’m so glad that the new series starts off with their romance.

    This story ticks the sports romance box and adds in a marriage of convenience.

    The story lost a star due to a few paragraphs being duplicated - minor editing issues.

    Oh I was so ready to give this five stars for the H and the H ONLY. However that epilogue sucked and pissed me off because I needed more closure. The H deserved WAYYYYYYY better than the h and I’m honestly not sure why he liked her. I think the author was trying to make her come across as a strong and independent woman but to me she came across as a self serving bitch🤷🏼‍♀️I know damn well she is not the only one on an NHL teams PR team. There is no reason she couldn’t have gone to be with her husband when he needed her. And there is NO REASON that she couldn’t call her husband and check on him and his brother that’s in the hospital, that’s childish behavior right there. So he called you cold….BECAUSE THATS WHAT YOU ARE!

    She did not grovel anywhere near enough to be redeemed. There were so many things that she could’ve done to grovel and all she did was shred divorce papers and make a Swedish cinnamon roll?! No it actually made me mad, but I was still going to forgive and give five stars because I was expecting a great epilogue with closure. But no all we got in the epilogue is stupid throwaway shit. There were so many things left unsaid that I think needed to be said, like her apartment that she kept and never gave up…why wasn’t that talked about that could’ve been a gesture to show she loves the H. I honestly do not believe she loved him, I think she liked how easy it was and didn’t want to lose that because her actions throughout the book did not scream love to me. Like her inner thoughts never once said she loved him, only when she was about to lose him did she think it. Honestly this book should’ve just had the H’s pov Bc I hated being in the h’s head.

    In summary, I wanted Axel to leave Langley, she was childish and only cared about herself and her job. She didn’t grovel when she desperately needed to and it was so disappointing that THIS is who sweet perfect Axel ended up with.

    This is book #3 with the title of Axel in my list, and this one may be the best!!

    Axel is a hockey player in the Swedish hockey league, who has NO interest in going to America to play in the NHL. His younger brother, Tage, whom he has raised, is in Sweden. That all changes when he sees Langley Pierce step off an airplane with an offer.

    Langley is the PR person for the Carolina Reapers, and they send her to Sweden to try to convince Axel to come to America and join their expansion team. Turns out Axel and Langley had met a year before, and Axel is seriously smitten with her. He tells Langley he will come to America and play for the Reapers - if she will marry him for 6 months.

    Langley was a likable character, but to be honest, her insecurities got a little old after a while. She had a rough childhood, with a mom who cared more about the men in her life than her daughter. Langley also had a boyfriend break up with her because she was way too devoted to her job. She doesn't like to give up control.

    But Axel. Good god, this man. I freaking adored him. He was SO good to Langley. He went into the marriage with every intention of making Langley fall in love with him. I sure fell in love with his character. He was kind, sweet, loving and incredibly loyal. I can't say enough good things about him.

    I really enjoyed the beginning of this new hockey series and I'm excited to read more. I would highly recommend this book.

  • Heather andrews

    Langley has quite the affect on her man, “ohmygawdthesearegood,”she moaned after her first bite. And now my pants were too tight..." Axel sometimes just talks to his passed out woman, “is that better, baby?” I asked. No response. “Baby?” I repeated. She snored. “And that,” I said, climbing off the bed to get one of my T-shirts, “is why I didn’t eff you tonight,” I told my passed out wife." Axel isnt exactly a rule follower, “pancakes were a ploy! You devious Viking!” I clucked my tongue at him. “We cook in this room. We eat in this room. We do not eff in this room.” Another growl..." I liked this book, I fell in love with Axel.

    French & English reviews

    Pensée directe après la lecture : je veux qu'on flirte avec moi en suédois !!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Direct thought after reading : I want men to flirt with me in Swedish !!
    SWEDISH IS THE NEW SEXY !!
    An almost perfect romance : I'm not a big fan of sports romances usually (too many cliché players: super sexy macho men who sleep with everything that moves) but here I loved it !! Axel is perfect (romantic, sexy, with humor, who does not hesitate towards his feelings, who supports the heroine without fail ...), the story was great (well detailed behind the scenes of hockey, drama with Axel's brother ...) and there was a fair balance between humor, action, sexy scenes and geek references =) (Hufflepuff and Slytherin =D)
    BUT
    If I really liked the heroine at the beginning (cute but also badass, with humor, passion ...), she disappointed me a lot towards the end ... Yes she has a family and relationship history that makes it hard for her to trust but for more than 5 months, Axel has done EVERYTHING so that she trusts him ... And this scene where And then she doesn't understand why he is mad at her ? And she only reacts when her best friend explains what to do ...
    I wanted to go into the book, take Axel in my arms and introduce him to another girl who would love him and make him happy ...
    And I must admit it spoiled the book a bit for me ...
    In short, a light romance that I devoured =D I will quickly see about the stories of other players of the Reapers but also of the Sharks because this book makes me want to know them all =D
    When he listens to the Harry Potter books just because she named her cat Hufflepuff is the type of gesture I want.
    This book could've been so good if the fmc didn't act so selfish at the 80% mark. Axel was all in from the start, he even called her his only love but Langley kept on with this push and pull and it made me feel bad for Axel. Also, this is the first book in the series, but the main characters seem to have met prior to this book, which made me wish we would've gotten to see their initial meeting. Overall, I enjoyed this book because of Axel.
    Too sweet to handle wkwkwk suka banget sama Axel ya ampun Teddy Bear softttt. Body Rambo tapi hati selembut pantat bayik. Jadi ya dia saking sukanya sama Langley, rela nikah dulu baru dating. Dan main rumah-rumahannya bikin meleleh. Dramanya pas, terus nggak ada orang ketiga keempat jadi makin happy aku bacanya. Setelah ini baca Connell yang iseng wkwk maaf ya Logan, kamu kuskip soalnya blurb kamu nggak menarik *plak 😂
    3.8/5 star hockey romance
    3.8/5 stars!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and this couple!
    A strong FMC? Check. Love to see it.
    BUT…. the miscommunication trope is here and I hate to see it. It was definitely a frustrating plot addition but I was able to get past it.
    It was a good, quick read !!
    Love AXEL. Viking hockey player? Yes, please.
    Was a great short story. Axel was written by a woman. This man… wow. That final interview with that reporter??? Never in my life do i think I’ll see a man defending a woman like that. That was brilliant. My fav thing about this book was that they actually think like logical human beings. I never thought I’d see the day
    DNF. THIS BOOK IS SO BAD
  • Kristiej
    4.5 out of 5
    This book was oh so close to perfect until near the end when Langley made a decision that I thought was wrong. She ended up knowing it was wrong too, but it hurt Axel so deeply and since there couldn’t be a more perfect hero then Axel, I was too annoyed with her and marked the book down a wee bit.
    I gather Axel, our hero, and Langley, our heroine, first met in a previous book, but that didn’t matter at all to picking up the story. Axel is a world class hockey player in Sweden. He’s perfectly content there as he makes enough money for his needs, he loves the town and the country and his younger brother who he raised alone for many years when his parents died lives there. He’s living a good life. But then Langley shows up out of the blue. As mentioned, he already knows her and she is there to try and get him to sign with a new NHL expansion team, where she is head of public relations. Axel explains to her his is perfectly happy where he is an doesn’t care if her plays in the NHL or not. But then he comes up with a wild idea. He agrees to sign with the team if she marries him and they stay married for six months.
    Now this sound nuts but as we read along we discover he has been in love with since her first met her but doesn’t think he would ever see her again. So in his mine this is the perfect opportunity to get her to fall in love with him. Because Langley is desperate and she did enjoy his company when they spent time together, she crazily enough agrees to it. So they get married and their lives begin to blend together beautifully and the more she sees what a great guy down the bone that Axel is, the greater her feelings grow. But she’s not too removed from a serious relationship where her ex did a real number on her and she is still very wary. But Axel gets this.
    I think Axel is one of the best heroes ever!! He is everything a hero should be, caring, supportive, thoughtful, understanding, well you simply must read the book to see how great he is. No, really. You need to read this book.
    I had more issues with Langley. I understood all her hesitations. Her ex was manipulative and as a result she is to give her job 100%. And Axel knows and understands this but for me, she takes things too far toward the end of the book and even she knows she made a mistake. I was just very angry at her and felt it was a real miss that up until then was a complete and solid A.
    But I still love this book and adore the hero. If you are a fan of hockey romances like I am, this is one you have to put on your list.
