The traditional story of Snow White reimagined...

The king is dead and Snow White has to live with her step-mother as queen until she can rightfully take her place. Though every indication tells her the queen will not give up her power easily. She assigns one of her terrifying huntresses to Snow to keep an eye on her, all in the name of protection.

Her huntress, Devana, is the most beautiful woman Snow has ever laid eyes on. She's strong and fearless and every day by her side is torture. The queen wants Snow to marry a prince, but all Snow can think about is the woman by her side all day and night, silent and stern. Does she see Snow the way she sees her? It's impossible to tell.

The true test comes when the queen demands Snow White's heart and she assigns the task to Devana, offering freedom in exchange for the fairest heart. Will the huntress kill the princess to gain her freedom, or will she give in to the pull between the two of them?

Snow White and Her Huntress (Sapphic Fairy Tale Retellings, #1) Reviews

I enjoy fairy tale re-tellings of the sapphic variety, and this was no exception.

It was full of mystery and intrigue. Magic, Faeries, Dwarves and Demons. Different enough from the original story to have you guessing. I believe this is the first in a trilogy. It leaves you wanting more, but still doesn't leave off in too much of a cliffhanger, either. So you feel satisfied while looking forward to the upcoming installment.

Snow's step mother can be downright charming, and loving towards Snow. But her lust for riches and power over-rules that bond. Snow realizes there is something deeply wrong with the land and it's people, some sort of curse seeping through. Not to mention her step-mothers own power plays which may be magical in nature. She also realizes she herself may have special abilities and origins.

Snow is attracted to her personal bodyguard 'the huntress' Davana, and together they try to uncover what is going on and seek answers, while trying to come to terms with their mutual attraction, and the fact that the Princess is being forced to wed within the year.

This story isn't the bodice ripper the book cover might suggest. If anything I think the cover does the story a disservice, since there's more political and magical intrigue here, than anything overtly sexual. There is one sex scene more toward the end, and was quite heartfelt while also being steamy.

The peek into the backstory of Davana being an orphan that was then raised as an assassin who was then hired by the Queen to be a 'Huntress' aka bodyguard was engaging, and I look forward to knowing more about her and seeing the complex relationship between her and Snow blossom. As well as how they will tackle what is to come in the kingdom and it's magics, with all the Queen's plans.

A very interesting kindle unlimited read.

A sapphic Snow White ;) Disney et your heart out!

Whatever you expect, this is a very nice and sometimes seriously hot, but also slow burn romantic fairy tale. It's highly entertaining.

I received an advance review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a f/f romance retelling of Snow White, without evil stepsisters and where her stepmother actually loves her, which was really enjoyable to read. It made everything more interesting when there was genuine affection involved.
There's a forced marriage situation brewing, but Snow only has eyes for her personal guard, Devana. Snow White's already half in love with her huntress before the book begins, but there is the lead up of does she/does she not return those feelings. It's set from both women's viewpoint, so you figure it out pretty early on, if the cover and title hadn't yet given it away.
Snow was a great character. It kept mentioning how everyone liked her wherever she went, but you could actually see it on the page in her thoughts and actions and like her alongside everyone else, and I loved that!
There isn't a huge amount that happens in this story or big surprises (which I find tends to be a drawback of retellings) but there is a lot of build-up, which I expect pays out in the next book. I'd really like to know more about the world here and it's been set up well to keep you wanting more answers without being frustrating. Hoping the action ramps up a bit more too; for a badass chick huntress in leathers she doesn't do much hunting or fighting, and those are my favourite parts.

Snow White as you've never seen her

This is a fantastic story. I love when fairy tales are retold in a way I can relate. This is one of the best. Snow is so kind and still strong in her convictions. She is so in love with her huntress Devana. They battle demons and magical spells. I cried and cheered while reading this book. I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

What a wonderful retelling of this classic tale of Snow White. She is strong, kind and intelligent. Deep morals and empathy written in deep and multifaceted characters that you want to fight for. I look forward to the next installment.

    A fantastic retelling

In so many versions of the Snow White tale, Snow is a demure, one-dimensional character. This book finally gives her the personality she deserves!

In this version, Snow retains the classic beauty and her graceful manner with people. But she also has real opinions, and a level of determination you don't see in classic fairytales. She knows that she wants a life with Devana, her Huntress, and she's working to get it while doing right by her people.

I also really liked the character of the stepmother in this version. Her wickedness and cunning are wonderfully balanced by a love for Snow, who is truly considered a daughter to her. Again, it's adding new layers to what used to be one-dimensional characters.

This looks to be an exciting trilogy, filled with romance, plot-twists, and magic. I can't wait for book 2!

Side note: I hope we get a spin-off book about Prince Edward and the sea witch. That sounds so fun to read!

Fairly silly fantasy content and simple prose, but poignant, direct romance and pretty steamy in moments.

I enjoy some good old fashioned lesbian tales, especially ones with strong female warriors and damsels who are more than just fragile and beautiful.
Snow white and her huntress was exactly that, an exceptional read which was not confined to being the regular old fashioned fairytale. What I loved most about this retelling was how human the author wrote the queen as. The Queen actually cares about snow white and continuously gives her chances instead of going for that quick kill. I also liked the mystery this book kept around everything. We all know what happens in snow white but this retelling is not the exact retelling with a lesbian take. No, this book could stand as its own very easily.
An amazing read. Entertaining, sexy, and fascinating. Highly recommended for people who are into fairy tales but would love to have those fairy tales featuring badass women.

The king is dead. Long live the queen. But who will that queen be? With her father passing before her coming of age, Snow White is left to the designs of her stepmother. While she’s always been loving and supportive, the undercurrent of hunger that drives the woman forward has always offset any trust Snow might place in her. Especially given that the woman may have planted spies within her midst, not limited to the Huntress - the warrior woman hired by her stepmother to protect Snow at all costs. How far does that loyalty go though? Snow is drawn to the beautiful, silent Devana like a moth to a flame. Will she get burned or can she rescue them both?

This retelling was a quick, enjoyable read. It kept just enough elements of the original storyline and altered others to make it it’s own unique tale. I enjoyed the feminist aspect of it, with Snow White railing against the notion that she needs to pick a prince to wed in order to rule and her defiance of the restrictions placed on her because of her gender. Even her stepmother has a role in promoting feminism in Snow White’s life though due to her own mechanisms she’s also the one who places the restriction of needing a husband on her.

However, it also felt sort of rushed. Devana is meant to be a stone cold warrior whose never experienced kindness in her life but she opens up and begins her relationship with Snow with hardly more than a token protest. Similarly Snow White’s emotional depth is very limited and rather than exploring and moving through those emotions with her we’re just thrust from one into the other without much connection.

Additionally, the Evil stepmother actually loves Snow White? I’m not sure what the intentions were with that and maybe it will be explored if this series continues. While Grimhilde is shown to be a by the book ruler, making no exceptions and ruling harshly, as well as being suspected of using magic to smooth ruffled feathers in the kingdom, she also loves and supports Snow White and only moves against her when Snow refuses to be her pawn any longer. Even then she apologizes to Snow for having to execute her for the sake of securing her power. What?

Overall there just wasn’t enough antagonism in this novel. Devana quickly falls for Snow and vice versa. They declare their love without any miscommunication. What could force them apart is eliminated by Snow standing up to her stepmother whom she is ultimately rescued from by Devana who in turn is saved by true loves kiss. It was a nice, neat tale, but I could’ve used more action. I’m hoping we’ll see that in book two now that Snow is on the run and looking to garner support in a bid against her stepmother for the sake of her people.

“My heart will always be yours.”

Sapphic retellings? My ultimate love. I love. Women in love = perfection.

Snow. Beautiful, Intelligent, compassionate & brave. Snow White in this book is a far cry from Disney’s Snow White. Snow is a not just kind and beautiful, she’s brave and she’s bold. She fought for her people and she saved her lover. I loved Snow’s character <3

Devana. Beautiful, intelligent & strong. Devana was your typical silent and deadly huntress. With a soft and sweet heart inside. Bound by a blood oath to the queen, Devana is in charge of protecting Snow but little did she know she would fall so hard in love for the gentle and sweet princess. Eventually, she fought Snow’s battles alongside snow.

In a refreshing tone, the queen is surprisingly not evil. She’s just a woman wronged by men who believes that she has to do the most extreme to get her way through life. She truly did love Snow.

    The only issue I had:
    - the lack of racial diversity

I loved the relationship between Snow & Devana. It truly warmed my heart. The spice was amazing too ;) I’m so excited for the next book.

I wouldn't say this was the best adaption of snow white I have read, the writing style take a bit to get into and the author repeats the same ideas a lot with a "tell don't show" method but it sort of vanishes by the end of the book though I do think this book could have done with first person narration to make the characters feel less detached.

From what we see of them both Snow and Devanna are good charcaters and their relationship is cute and both their chapters have distinguished voices which is always good.

The story deviates from the original quite a bit so much so that I forgot I was reading a sno white retelling but it wasn the snow white bit I was overly interested in, the differences in plot make it more interesting and I think more of those elements will be added in the following books in this trilogy.

Overall it's a good book, if you can get through the first couple chapters it goes up from there.

    Beautiful alternate Snow White tale

I loved the bastardization of the Snow White tale. Snow being clever & intelligent was a given (come on, it's Emma Dean), but it's is possibly my favorite part. Most Snow White retellings have her kind of vapid & reactionary instead.

I desperately need to know Devana's full backstory. The tiny tidbits we get are fascinating & not enough! lol

I'm very excited to see more of the dwarves; loved the name changes. Looking forward to seeing the characterization connections there, if any.

As with all Emma Dean books, grammar & spelling was top notch. Nothing was superfluous, every scene has a reason to be there. Even the couple sexy scenes are tasteful & well placed, not titillating for titillating sake (not that I thought that would happen).

Loved the F/F take on a classic

Another good read by Emma dean. This series might be shaping up to be one of my favorite retellings of snow white. It has many of the themes that we love in snow white and add great depth to the characters.

Snow wants to be the queen that her people deserve but when you are taught one thing but the truth is different it can be eye opening. But once your eyes have been open what do you do about it?

Devana is the silent huntswoman who is suppose to protect snow but works for snows stepmom who snow doesn't fully trust. Devana has to make choices that she didn't see herself having to make.

Both of this characters grow alot within this book and I can't wait to see what happens next.

If you are looking for a Romance book with a retelling of Snow White with a twist, then check this out! This is my first F/F book. Having read and enjoyed many of Emma's books, I decided to try it out. I normally don't mind a romance so long as there is strong characters and a compelling story. Emma definitely had all of this and more. With Snow White and Her Huntress, I enjoyed both perspectives, looking forward to seeing how the story is shaped by the two and enjoying watching both of the characters grow throughout the book. I spent much of the book eagerly wondering how Emma's twists on the story of Snow White will influence this story. With Emma's amazing talent for writing and the amazing story and characters she's created, I can't wait to see where the story will go in book two!

  • Vervada

Actually, just recently I read another lesbian Snow White retelling after loudly proclaiming that this fairy tale was among my least favourite. But I enjoyed that other book and I liked this one even better. The thing I'd hated the most about the original tale was just how passive the protagonist was and how everything happened to her. In this story, however, Snow is a far more interesting and complicated character. While she doesn't do much in the beginning out of both fear and love for her stepmother, by the end she's finally decided to fight back and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing that in the next book.

  • Dee

It was really hard for me to get into the story. I went in thinking it’s a stand alone book and was wondering why it was dragging so much with nothing much happening. It wasn’t until the final chapter that I realized it was book one of a trilogy. I don’t think I will be reading the next books for now because I honestly didn’t connect with any of the characters enough to want to know or care what happens next.

In the end I read it just for the sake of finishing it because I was already in too deep.

  • Caitlin

    2.8 stars.
It was good but I got bored with it around 60% because it was the same inner battle over and over again. I’d like to have more detail of everything else in this magical place. And like ugh I wish I knew this was a series that ended not a cliff hanger type thing. That’s just not my style for books these days I’m recovering from burnout so like I cannot read longer drawn out stories right now.
There was minimal spice (basically one scene) and minimal magic which is ironic given how this is a Snow White retelling.

  • Olivia Marie Clark

    This book was kinda strange.

I didn’t enjoy it, but I didn’t hate it either. It didn’t have much of a plot at first because there was nothing but Snow and Devana pining after each other. It became more interesting when there was an actual plot involved and not just romance. It was good enough to keep me reading, but not good enough for me to really contemplate reading more of the series.

  • SaraBeria

    I really loved this book!

My favourite part of the book was the relationship between Snow White and her stepmother and I loved how complex it was from loving to controlling, from closeness to distant. The start of the book was a bit slow-moving but when you get over it, the story gets more interesting.

While some parts of the book seemed a bit rushed (like the fairy godmother just saving the day out of nowhere) overall this was a pleasure to read and I can't wait for the next book!

  • Dee Kap

My first journey in this genre ff. What strong female characters. They are extremely well written. This is just a really wonderful take on a classic fairy tale but it gives you so much more. I found some parts a little repetitive but I have a feeling it could be to really throw off where the story is going and lull the reader into a false sense of security! It is sexy it is dark and it is well worth reading.

  • MaryAnne

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this story. I just wasn't aware that it would be part of a trilogy (I just assumed subsequent books would have different MCs). This makes sense for why the book seemed to drag a bit? I think it could've worked fine as a standalone - the middle scenes felt like a lot of filler. I'd want to read more from the author since I like her writing style, but this book in particular wasn't all that thrilling

  • Lindzee Haack

F/F typically isn’t what I choose to read. This one was my first time reading one and I was NOT disappointed. Emma twisted the original Snow White in a beautiful way!! Snow is innocent but also strong and determined and doesn’t let anyone make decisions for her. The relationship between her and Devana is slow but hot! I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait for the next one!!

  • LORRIE

I loved this! There was no shortage of action, laughter, fear, sexiness and l0ve

  • Rebecca

I absolutely love this book with a twist. Snow White and her Huntress is now one of my favorite books out . How could you do that to me ??? Cliffhanger really??? I need book 2

  • Oakley

    Great Book

Love this book! I have been waiting for this book to be released and the wait was worth it. One of the better fairy tale retelling that I have found.

  • Kristina Lovel

What a great retelling. This story was full of magic and intrigue. I love how Snow wasn't made into a weak fearful woman. The way the Huntress was portrayed was brilliant as well.
