Excerpt:___
When you are a cop’s wife, you are aware of certain truths: 1) If he’s late, no news is good news. You are told when bad things happen. 2) If he’s late and the phone rings, most likely all is well if it is his voice you hear. 3) An officer killed in the line of duty is often a new father or close to retirement. Pay attention and you’ll see the pattern. 4) Most importantly, when an officer comes to your home with someone holding a bible, something is horribly, horribly wrong.___
It is with this knowledge that I open my door on a September day with a cranky baby on my hip and Cheerios stuck in my hair.

When a Good Man Dies: A Short Story Reviews

Raw, heartfelt, and deeply moving. A mere 30 pages, but jampacked with feeling.
Damn! This author can write straight into a reader's heart!

Narrated in a simple and straightforward manner, this short story is one of those that will stick with you long after turning the last page. Not only because the characters in it could be your next door neighbours, or because of the emotion it deals with - grief in the aftermath of loosing someone you love - a palpable feeling that bleeds from the pages.

This little story will stick with you because of the punch it packs. Because it will make you FEEL with its characters and, perhaps even more importantly, because it will make you reconsider the way you view life and the way you live it alongside your loved ones.

If there ever was a story to remind you life is short and you should make the best of it, this is it.
We never know how much time we are given with the ones we love, so cherish every moment.

    This one's a MUST READ!

I had this story on my kindle app for a while and decided to read it. What a quick but meaningful read. It probably took me less than 30 minutes to read it, but I felt such a storm of emotions in that 30 minutes.

This short is a very honest and straightforward look into the aftermath of losing someone in the line of duty. It also deals with grief in general and the things we might do to stay connected with a loved one. (And how we might not admit what we’re doing.)

Anyone who is coping with grief and loss will find a kindred soul in the pages of this story.

When a Good Man Dies is a beautifully written short story. I started crying in the first paragraph and didn't stop until the very end. My only fault with it was that it ended too soon. Obviously I knew it was a short story when I downloaded it to my kindle but it's such a heartbreaking tale I wanted more. I'll definitely be reading more by this author and III be rooting for her to write a full length novel because boy can she write!

Wow. Kreitzman is an artist at painting short stories. I went through a gauntlet of emotions in less than 30 minutes. Anyone who can make you feel SO much in such a short time deserves applause and a lot of it! Her words affected me in ways that made me feel numb at the loss she made me feel. I know this nation is full of good men who promise to protect and serve and when she writes, "but who protects them" the earth shook. I could feel Sarah's need to wrap herself in his shirt just to smell his scent again because I love the faint scent of my husband in the car as I drive to work. The tears began to blur my vision when Sarah so honestly says, "today is the day I give my husband to the ground." And I felt the heaviness in the hurt she felt when she realized months later that she hadn't though about him all day, not until she saw his picture at home. I never want to experience losing my husband, but Kreitzman gave me a pretty clear picture of how it would feel. I applaud you for making me FEEL so much!

Beautiful and moving! I'll admit I've had this on my Kindle for a while now, but I finally had the time and appropriate mindset to read this. With lovely and unique descriptions (I especially loved the section where Sarah listens to the eulogies, and becomes disquieted by the fact no one addresses the bits of Steven that made him HIM), this short story is a very quick read that packs a punch. Despite Sarah's pain and believable coping mechanisms, the story ends on a sweet and hopeful note. I finished this in less than 30 minutes, so I encourage others to give it a try! I'm glad I finally did.

    An emotional story

The story captured the emotions of dealing with a terrible situation very well. It painted pain, anger, a mixture of feelings, as if I were there.

Got this book on the recommendation of a reviewer I follow and read right away. Beautiful and haunting. I'm in tears.

Nannette Kreitzman elicits emotions in 30 pages that take most people an entire novel to achieve! This is a powerful story that grabs you from the first line and doesn't let go until long after you've finished the book. When a Good Man Dies is about the loss of a spouse in the line of duty. Kreitzman captures the depths of despair, the numbness and hope in the future. This is a brilliant and poignant story that everyone should read!

A poignant story from the heart

We all secretly fear the loss of our loved one but when they are a serving officer, that fear is a daily possibility. This beautiful and heartfelt story faces the moment when fear becomes reality and from somewhere the courage to carry must be found. All the more poignant for its lack of sentimentality, When a Good Man Dies is a must read for short story lovers.

    Touching

Bravo Nannette! This one touched my soul. Having been in the window's shoes, myself, you captured the very emotions a women feels when she finds herself left alone to carry on.
