Marie Angel (1923-2010) writes and illustrates a lift-the-flap alphabet book featuring equatorial environments and animals. Each two-page set features a single, different environment with prominent native animals. In each scene, flaps reveal different native animals whose names begin with a particular alphabet letter. The flaps are thin and easy to tear or wrinkle. Often, the location of hidden animals in each image does not thematically fit with the foreground image. An instructive variation of this theme could include featuring camouflaged animals in their natural hiding spots--to avoid interrupting the narrative. While some readers might be concerned with readers easily damaging the book, other readers should find Angel's illustrations to be charming and delightful.
