“Sweet Revenge” is an intriguing and well written mystery that kept me guessing till the end. As much as I enjoyed this novel, there were a few issues I had with it.
Firstly, the two protagonists in the story, Annie and Shane, were quite boring. Yes, there was a lot of character development but there was nothing interesting about them. Not to mention there were absolutely no sparks, passion, or chemistry between the two.
"Annie Kessler was a good looking woman, there was no denying that. But she was good looking in a different kind of way than he was used to. Blond, tall with nice figures, model type faces.
"She was small, barely five feet tall. She didn't have the curviest figure. Her face was nice, he supposed. It wasn't anything he probably would have noticed right away if they hadn't been thrown together the way they had been."
Wow! What woman wouldn't want to hear such endearing words, especially to someone you're in love with? (Commence eye rolling) "Her face was nice, he supposed." Please stop. You're embarrassing me with all your compliments. Whatever. (Continue eye rolling)
By the way, I'm really sick and tired of reading how when the hero and heroine make love: (a) she's on the pill; (b) no condoms available; (c) they've tested clean for STDs; or (d) she's unable to have children - only to find out their HEA includes (Surprise!) a baby.
Now, there's a killer out there and his main target is Annie. FBI Agent Shane is doing his best to keep her alive. So tell me, after constantly badering (my opinion) Shane repeatedly asking him if they'll make it out alive, why the hell does she leave the motel room alone to see how close the killer is when she hears him outside the window, thereby getting herself captured by him??
Part of the story included a subplot about Annie's abusive ex-husband, and how he was going to "make the bitch pay." Perhaps more development of this story would have made the novel even more intriguing. Instead, buildup of this story quickly went south.
All in all, still a good whodunit mystery that's worth the read. -
Surprising Suspense
From the first page of this book, I was hooked. There were the few times reading when I knew what was going to happen with the storyline, but the majority of the book kept me guessing. Tried to read it all in one day, but had to put it down @1 because I didn't want to miss anything important. This is the first book I have read from this author and I will definitely read more. -
