Reading Philippians: A Theological Introduction (Cascade Companions) Reviews
-
Gupta gives a great tour of Philippians. While Nijay is clearly a distinguished New Testament scholar with a deep understanding of the text, he puts this in service of a lively and engaging introduction to this gem of a letter by helping you see the text anew. He starts each of the four chapters introducing the four chapters of Philippians with a fresh translation. Use of "celebrate/celebration" instead of "joy/rejoicing," for instance, brings an immediacy and freshness to familiar words. In each chapter, he then looks carefully at the main features of the text, then concluding with reflections on the significance of the text. He concludes the book with a brief chapter on the scholarly study of Philippians. I loved this book. It's a delightful invitation to this beloved letter of Paul.

A slim but stimulating theological introduction to this short epistle, with some interesting practical/pastoral insights, that avoids descending into intragesis or exposition. It is not a detailed verse by verse commentary, but there are plenty of those already from all sorts of theological angles. Will seek out more in this series and by this commentator.
