Truly, there is magic in fairytales. And in her eyes, he found his own...

For as long as Marybeth Wright could remember, the imposing ruins of the ancient castle had always been a place of comfort. With knowledge of herbs and a small cottage passed down to her from her late grandmother, she spends her days in the quiet seclusion of the woods.

For Felix Hulford, Duke of Arkley, curing his ailing mother is his life’s purpose. Growing increasingly desperate, he decides to enlist the help of the old sage of the forest, only to discover that there’s nothing old about the striking healer that appears before him.

But she seems to be carrying a curse, for her arrival triggers a series of baffling happenings. Determined to discover who is behind the attacks on his sick mother, Marybeth and Felix come face to face with their worst fears.

And it all seems to be connected to Marybeth’s parentage and Blackleigh Castle’s fabled treasure…

And again I'm just being way too picky when it comes to romance books.
There were a lot of things I did like in this, but I didn't really get attached to the story or characters. I think it ended up just being a little too sweet and adorable for me.
This book definitely focuses on the romance and not just the sexual attraction between the two characters (which tends to be one of my main complaints in other romance books). It wasn't steamy at all, so if you don't like reading sex scenes, you'll be fine with this.
We actually got to see the two characters fall in love and weren't just told that they liked each other and expected to believe it. I also liked that Felix wasn't one of those sexist alpha-male characters that I've seen in way too many books recently.
There were quite some plotpoints beside the romance, and the stakes were actually quite high at several points in the book, which I really enjoyed.
I also loved seeing some of the non-romantic relationships, like the friendship between Marybeth and Oliver or how much Felix cared for his mother. In general there were a lot of relationships were you could really see how much people cared for each other, which was heartwarming to read about. But I have to say I didn't like the mother's character herself too much. She was talking too much about young people having to marry and made a lot of heteronormative comments. I know it's realistic for the time this is set in, but I don't want to read stuff like that.
Marybeth's character never quite reached her full potential in my opinion. She was set up to be such a strong protagonist, but something always seemed to be missing from her characterization, and I can't put my finger on what it was.
And while I do think Marybeth and Felix make a good couple, I never got emotionally invested in their romance.

    He Ain't 😨Afraid of No Ghosts👻!

Crazy, Beautiful, Wonderful, Heartwarming, and Heartbreaking💔!
Murder🔫🔪☕, Mystery, Treachery🔪, and Mayhem in Jolly Olde England🏰!

What a wonderful tale📕 that will take you through a full range of thoughts and emotions! This is a very involved and interesting book that will mesmerize you until The very end!

The book begins with the tale of a local legend about a supposed witch, a lost or Hidden treasure, and a sacrifice for the truth.

The legend persists and Marybeth, the current healer, in the Duke's woods is a descendant of the woman in the legend, and some consider her a witch, too.
She spends a lot of time at the ruins of the old castle🏰 where her ancestor leapt to her death so many years ago.

When the the Duke's mother falls ill he goes to healer Marybeth's croft deep in the woods on his estate and brings her to his mansion🏰 as a last ditch effort to heal his mother.

Once at the mansion🏰, Marybeth💃💋 begins to help Felix's mother and at the same time she and Felix🐺, the Duke, begin to have feelings for each other. Then weird things begin to happen at the mansion. There is apparently a 👻ghost roaming the halls!

Neither Felix🐺🔫🔪 or Marybeth💃💋 believe in ghosts👻 but the apparition👻 is impossible to catch!

This is one historical romance you will not want to miss! It has a bit of everything in it--a devoted Duke and his ailing mother--a love that is not allowed but flourishes anyway and a ghost that is haunting the Duke's abode--but only after Marybeth comes to try and heal his mother.

There are a million twists and turns in this one and a couple of dastardly high society men as well.

Why is the Dutchess ailing--none of the physicians of the day have a clue--will Felix really have to marry someone he does not want to--will they be able to track down the ghost? Will the treasure ever be found? The ending will astound you as the real parentage of Marybeth is revealed!

I absolutely adored this novel and the extended novella makes it even better if that is possible!

I found myself captivated by A Duke Under Her Spell by Emma Linfield. In this book the reader discovers haunted mansions and castles, evil villains, and period social and cultural norms. This is a true Regency Romance Novel. It fits all the criterion of this genre. It has a high-spirited heroine, Marybeth Wright, a healer. There is a strong irresistible hero, Felix. Ms. Linfield’s plot is quite believable filled with mystery and suspense. The antagonists, the Earl of Bredon and his sister Lady Cordelia and Lord Enfield are the perfect villains. To get their hands on the allegedly lost treasure of the Blackleigh Castle they unite and embark on a dark path wreaking havoc. Their quest is the device that moves the plot along.
I enjoyed Ms. Linfield’s complex and multi-layer characters—both the primary and secondary. Marybeth and Felix are kind, caring individuals who are loyal and brave. The same can be said for secondary characters like Oliver Stinger, Mr. Wheatley and the seven Enfield adult sons. Her antagonists got under my skin as they were as evil as anyone could be driven by greed. I also appreciated Ms. Linfield’s use of dialog to enlighten the reader to the different layers of her characters. The reader feels as though they are first-hand witnesses to the drama that unfolds. Ms. Linfield incorporates several twists and turns into her plot to build mystery and suspense. Overall, this is a riveting read and I highly recommend it to Regency Romance readers.

Well done and hectic story of a beautiful and very much alone young woman who works as a healer and is alone. Left by her only relative's passing, Marybeth is summoned by the Duke of Arkley to help his mother. He is concerned about her recent decline and fears she may die. He is responsible for his estate, the people on it and his need to sire an heir. His mother wishes him to marry a local noble, and he will oblige his mother even though the lady and he really do not mesh. Unknown to Felix, his bride-to-be is being coerced to marry him in order for her brother to find the treasure that supposedly is hidden on Arkley land. Felix is falling in love with Marybeth but they both know the futility of that. There are many other threads here and the author keeps the action going well.

    An interesting mix

For the most part this is a very proper, polite book. And most of the characters are excessively nice people who speak to each other in what we today would consider a stilted, super courteous manner. Then all of sudden there are hidden treasures, haunted castles, poisoned Duchesses, crazy evil noblemen and a surprising amount of physical cruelty and violence. The story held my attention despite it's implausibility and I kept reading, eager to see how it ended.

    Love never lost

Interesting love story twist and turns as Noble men try to win an unusual way to show their love for the mother and a young lady that has lost her love of her life . Finding love in teaching medicine that is thought by many a witch craft. Murder. Mayhem. Interesting use of language.

    A healer and a Duchess

Marybeth was raised to be a healer and when when she was summoned to attend the Dowager Duchess she encountered the Duke! This story caught me by surprise! It was so detailed and meticulous with evil men spawned from the depths of Hell!!!

  • Kathy

Felix’s mother is very sick the doctors don’t give any hope. So Felix asks Marybeth a healer to try to help. She is making headway, but there are too many bad guys mucking up the works. A complicated story but enjoyable.

  • Jennifer

Dialogue was a little rough. Story line was ok, but the end did not wrap up the whole story. Kept waiting for them to find the hidden treasure, or go into more detail about the myth. A little disappointing.

    Tales and honor

You will read of love at first sight. Devotion and willingness to help. You'll see the many years bring death. Greed brings death. But true love will with stand the time no matter.

    DNF: Lackluster writing

Pedantic writing tells a dull story with stilted dialog, information dumps, and an overabundance of expository description. Ugh. I would have given this a 1-star review, but decent editing (I found few errors) adds a star for technical competence.

This book captures your interest from the beginning. Each character is written with interest and layers to the personality. This author never fails to impress with her writing abilities.

    A beautiful story

This was a good story from love hate and in between. I couldn’t get on the website when I finished the book but I enjoyed it.

Fast-paced, squeaky clean, and very romantic. (Of course, no great piece of literature, but that goes without saying.)
