Actor: The Life \u0026 Times of Paul Muni Reviews
-
An entertaining and vivid account of Muni's complex life and relationship to his own art, particularly the chronic problem the man had with his own self-esteem. Even better, there is the fascinating history of the world of Yiddish theater, both in Europe and the USA--including the wild, miscellaneous touring companies who struggled across the continent. The crazy plays (or mini-dramas) Muni performed in as a kid, often in elaborate costumes and disguises, make him a participant-pioneer in some of the weirdest theater to arrive in America. The Hollywood and Broadway stories are interesting. The man's relationship to his wife and her influence over his acting choices equally fascinating. Muni is also a clever man, and his many criticisms of acting and movies contain a lot of wisdom. Example: Question: how many actors are in the Screen Actor's Guild? Muni: I'd say about one out of a hundred".

Excellent biography. Like all biographies, it has minor flaws, but overall truly a wonderfully written work. This was so easy to read and engaging with the writing style, and I truly feel as though I learned a lot more about Paul Muni and his life. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys Muni.
