After the Rain (The Callahans, #1) Reviews

I've read a number of Jennifer Hayden's book but for me this one was a DNF. I was so bored and uninterested that I just wouldn't force myself to continue. Plus I absolutely couldn't stand the best friend and her match making. This felt so fake.
I'll pass on this series although I would read more books in a couple of her other series. -
This book was all right. I pretty light romance. The main female character seemed to get over her intimacy difficulty a lot faster than I think is possible. With my own history, it's been a decade since my situation and I have yet to feel the same pleasure with my husband being intimate in that way. It's something we had to talk about and work on for years. I find it doubtful that she was ready to be intimate like that in only a month. Although, people heal in different ways and this is just a story. I just don't want young women to read this book and think that when they find "the one" that they will heal this quickly.

“That’s why I want to move here—with you.”
Kylie needs a break from her life so she decides to visit her bestie in her new town. Trey’s the sheriff in this sleepy little town named after his family. They both hear scars inside and out and ghosts that they have to fight. Can they figure it out before they lose each other? I originally read this series when it first came out and didn’t know the importance of reviews. I’m so glad I found this series again! Super read! Enjoy!!! -
After the Rain is by Jennifer Hayden. It is one of the Callahans’s books. It is set in Arizona.
Kylie Rhodes is headed from Riverdale, Montana to Callahan, Arizona to visit her best friend. She and Faye Talbot had known each other from elementary school. Faye was with her as she tried to heal from the terror of being raped at the age of 13. Kylie’s Mother’s reaction to this horrid event was to put it behind her and forget it. However, Kylie couldn’t. At first she was almost catatonic but eventually came out of it and returned to her life. However, she could not abide being touched by a male and definitely not to become intimate. She finished college and became a teacher. She had been going with Paul for three years but broke up with him because he cheated on her. Paul and her mother blamed it on Kylie but Kylie was having no part of that. Now she was headed for Callahan to visit her best friend for part of the summer. Then she would return home and finish remodeling her house. However, her car decided to quit about ten miles from Callahan. What was she to do? Before she decided to start walking, a SUV drove up and a man got out. He was in a sheriff’s car; but he wasn’t in uniform. He scared Kylie at first. He helped her get her car going and followed her into town to the auto shop. Kylie never even got his name.
She walked to the Callahan Bar and Grill to see if she could find Faye. Faye’s fiancé and the owner of the Bar and Grill, Dusty Callahan, welcomed her and sent her off with Faye to settle in at their house. Kylie preferred staying in a hotel as she occasionally had nightmares about her rape. Faye assured her it would be OK. That night, Faye had planned a family dinner and took Kylie with her. Now she was to meet the rest of the family- Joey, Elle, and Trey. Beau was a baseball player and out with his team. Almost everyone was at the Bar and Grill and the party was going along great when the final member of the family appeared. Trey had been out working. When he walked in, Kylie was horrified to see it was the man who helped her that day. She had been rude to him. What would he think of her now?
Trey had his fill of women entering his life and messing it up. He did not want a relationship; but he was drawn to Kylie. Was he drawn to her to help her as he immediately recognized the symptoms of abuse when he talked to her or was it something else? Then Faye taps him to help make Kylie feel at home so maybe she will stay. What can he do now? What does Kylie think of all of this? -
The first half was so good - seeing how Trey handled things even before knowing what happened to Kylie. Very jolting.
The second half seemed to have a different pace. Overall pretty good read. -
This was a well-written novel. It did drag a little and had
a very well-done but sexually explicit scene. It had other material
that was adult content...not a good book for YA to read.
It was an appealing story of a young woman still coming "to grip"
with a savage rape when she was only fourteen. She, however,
overcame the trauma too quickly for it to be reality. Considering the
brutality involved with the rape and the trauma, she would not have
responded that easily.
There were times the author avoided the language and could have
throughout the story. It still was a good story though. -
I loved this introduction to The Callahans and I can't wait for the next brother! There was a great friendship, two tortured souls, a town full of sweet people, crazy ex's, and much, much more! I so enjoyed watching Kylie and Trey's story play out and I totally bought it, their struggles, and their HEA. Great start to what I'm sure is going to be a wonderful series...bring it, Beau you're up to bat next!!!!
