In The Eye of the Trainer, Ken Ramirez brings to life the power of positive reinforcement training to build trust and transform lives.

Ken is one of the most creative, cogent, and effective animal trainers in the world. His positive reinforcement training principles are studied, replicated, and applied in settings as diverse as conservation efforts with elephants on the African plains, canine search and rescue in Texas, oil-disaster recovery for sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico, butterfly training in England, and animal shelters in Chicago.

In this inspiring, heartwarming, and hopeful series of essays chronicling his 40+ years of global exploration and observation, Ken shares not only the intriguing personalities of the animals that shaped his life, but how their unique challenges influenced his training choices, philosophy, and worldview.

Ken's world is one where great training transforms the shy animal into the confident one, the aggressive into the calm,. and the mistrustful in to the trustful--and even the unsupportive boss into an ally.

See the world better .See it differently, See it through The Eye of the Trainer

So to start of Ken Ramirez is basically an animal training celebrity, and rightfully so he has a lot of experience and knowledge. He's worked with countless different animals and many different environments/places.

    What I liked:
+ His underlying training philosophy, that he refers back to over and over throughout the book. In a nutshell it's about putting the animals needs first which is wonderful.
+ Lots of anecdotal stories about many different kinds of animals
+ Insightful/resourced well, he constantly sights scientific studies and articles, love that his information is grounded in these kinds of things.
+ Some of his work is truly groundbreaking, like teaching animals to count.

    What I didn't like:
-I really wish he gave more specific examples of how to train. I would LOVE to learn more about how to teach animals complex concepts like counting. But maybe that's in one of his other books?
    - A few of the stories just felt a little meh, like the movies he talks about felt unnecessary. Like it simply didn't add anything.
    - It's interesting but I kind of think he humble brags throughout the book. Like yes, he's modest, but he also gives you A LOT of examples of how he can train ANY animal. And a lot of feel good stories about animals being transformed. But I just feel like he's not painting a full picture.

Overall a good read, but maybe pair this book with some other dog training books?

Sooooo much to love about this book!

    1) Ken Ramirez is not only one of the most accomplished animal trainers in the world (with a species count of like 500!), but he is also one of the best at making training secrets accessible to less experienced trainers (which includes, like, every trainer in the world).

    2) He's humble and quick to admit when he's screwed something up.

    3) He puts just as much emphasis on being kind and fair to people as he does on treating animals right.

    4) He acknowledges that you don't make people want to change by telling them they should, or that their methods don't work. You make them want to change by giving them more tools for their toolboxes. The change happens on its own when people realize the potential.

    5) He mixes solid training advice perfectly with engaging anecdotes.

Ken Ramirez is the perfect expert for where I am in my training career, but honestly he is so accessible that even a beginning trainer would get a lot out of his books.

(I do not give a lot of 5-star reviews to training books.)

What can I say? Ken Ramirez is the man.

I love the way he talks about training, how he brings everything back to good fundamentals for animals and good skills for trainers. I like how open he is, how he's always learning and how willing he is to share what he's learned. He doesn't give off the impression that he knows it all, but he can always support his methods with science and research.

Most of all you can see how much this man cares for animals and their welfare, and that he doesn't discriminate from the smallest butterfly to the largest elephant.

Ken is a model for thoughtful, considerate discussion. His stories are always entertaining and informative. Having heard him speak (and thereby heard many of these tales before), I could hear his voice in the writing, which is a gift. This book was enjoyable because it offers more insight into how we can become better trainers, better learners, and better people. Huzzah!

    Positive all the way!

Such an interesting read. Reaffirming all the good things in positive reinforcement teaching for everyone. Ken is an inspiration to so many people and has done so much work worldwide to improve the way we interact with animals and each other. My dream is to visit The Ranch!
