Team Yankee: Oil War (Wwiii) Reviews

Team Yankee, the Novel and Game, are about a (Thankfully) mythical Conventional War between NATO (and a Few ANZAC- the game's Publisher in based in New Zealand) and the Warsaw Pact forces that takes place in 1985. But knowing that many players of their Six Day War/October War variant "Fate Of A Nation" that features Israelis, Jordanians, Egyptians, Syrians, and Iraqi would want to get involved, they came out with this extension to their very Successful Flames of War WWII concept- that Updates the Middle Eastern Armouries, with a loose basing on the Forces that Israel and Syria clashed with in the Bekaa Valley in the Lebanon Campaign of 1982 and the First Gulf war, when Iraq attacked Iran in 1980. As such this Rule Extension/Force Creation guide is a pretty good effort if you want to game the 1980-1991 Era. You can certainly use this as a loose guide for a Gulf War I or II, as the Iranians make their debut in a big way in this book. In the book, the Iranians and Warsaw Pact are allied, and Iraq is a NATO ally- but the reader/player can mix and match as they like.

Israelis players get to trade in their Sh'ot Tanks (Centurions) and Magachot (M-48/60 Pattons) for their new sexy Merkavot! The Israeli made Merkava I and Merkava II having come in to service by 1985. The Rest have mainly Warsaw Pact Gear- but the Iraqis with their French Purchases and the Iranians with their left over American and British gear are also interesting twists. You get to understand how to put a force together with the points system, How to base the Minis, how to paint them- as well as all the special rules for each country that Battlefront loves so much. Pretty good preparation for your first game- although chances are some rules are interpreted a little differently as different venues. Personally I'd prefer all the Combatants in one place- but this is the Battlefront way to get as much value out of each piece of the game and drag out each release. I hope that gamers will just use this as starting point, since Lebanese and Jordanian forces need to be created by the reader/gamer- but by using the other force's weapons and ratings as a guide are very attainable

There is little adult content or graphic violence to deal with here, so an interested Junior reader over about 10 can master the elements of the game- they might need guidance with the real history so they do not confuse or conflate two. For the Gamer/Modeller/Military Enthusiast, a mixed bag. The alternative history is interesting, but not overly much so for the Enthusiast, to see what forces are included- and those left out. For the Gamer/modeller, tho- a really nice look at a new possible theatres for scenarios and dioramas. And if you really want to play this game- you totally need this book.
