Peter Brandvold – The Rogue Lawman – Reviewed 12/30/19
Hangings, Marshalls, Governors, outlaws, Sexy Outlaw, Betrayal and they are all against Hawk!
Gideon Hawk is a Deputy Marshall in the Dakota Territory. An easy-going man that loves his wife, Linda, and son, Jubal, also has a deep regard for the law. His wife was a fragile woman and his boy was a little slow in getting started in life. Linda and Hawk worked with him but Jubal was just going to take his time enjoying life. His favorite things were fishing with his dad and carving his beloved horses. Doing his job, Gideon had arrested Ted Meade, and he was hanged for his crimes. You can’t be a lawman and not gain lots of enemies, from people that get caught to the family members! Ned Meade was one of those that intended to make sure Hawk paid for his part in his brother’s death.
Ned found out about Hawk’s son and arrived at the school. He had told Jubal that his dad had sent him and that his dad was going to buy him a horse. He insisted that Jubal needed to check out the horse, so he needed to come with him. Now being a Marshall didn’t pay all that much, so to add to his income when he was not chasing someone, he dealt faro at the local saloon. On this day, he had just returned to dealing when the schoolmarm showed up. She let him know that Jubal did not return to the classroom after their break and that he rode off with some rough-looking men.
Over the next 24 hours was the time that changed Gideon Hawk’s life forever! Losing both Jubal and Linda caused a coldness to enter his heart, and he was not sure it would ever thaw. Gideon Hawk was going to continue to clear the world of the scum, but he was going to do it on his terms only!!!
What did I like? This was the most moving western that I have read in a long time. Being a mother and having lost a son, I know the freeze that seeps into the heart, and you don’t think it will ever leave. The pain just never stops. Peter did an excellent job of writing and expressing those emotions. I felt every moment of agony all over again as Hawk did. The other four stories continue these emotional feelings, all the while he doles out Hawks' law. The final story “Bullets over Bedlam and Border Snakes” brought a really passionate finish to this omnibus. It brought me to tears!!!!
What will you like? If you have read any of Peter’s books, such as Yakima Henry and others, you will know that he is an exceptional writer that pays close attention to details. His characters are amazing, and many feel so real that you would think that you are reading a history book. He takes them and molds them into the person next door that you definitely want to know or at least you can relate to them. Another of his writing talents is the attention he pays to the descriptions, right down to what the character is wearing. All of this takes and puts you right into the storyline yourself. It is amazing. These five books will open up the wild WEST to you in a way that you have not experienced before. Get ready for one exceptional ride through the hell that Gideon Hawk lived through. Awesome!! -
I am appalled at Brandvold's writing. Over the past few years I have read 100's of good westerns by scores of authors. None of them saw the need to misuse of to take the Lord's name in vain as Brandhold does. I will NOT buy nor read another of his books. There is also no need for his often use of the F... Word. He seems to believe that he is intelligent by using many words which I needed a dictionary to understand, but many of these words were misused. It is sad to see someone that has to go out of his way to use profanities and to use and take the Lord's name in vain as he did. I'm sorry that I ever read this book and if you read it I believe you will regret it also
See above comments and do not waste your time or money 💰 on this book. I am sorry that I did -
Raw, earthy, brutal frontier action with the men and women of the times
Nothing sugar coated as this deputy US Marshall dispenses his own form of justice to cutthroats, killers, and evil outlaws on both sides of the border. Seeing his young son hanged and his wife’s subsequent suicide drives him to serve his own brand of justice on those too smart to be caught or too dangerous for other lawmen to tackle. Great characters, tense action, sudden twists with a caveat that some actions go into too much detail. Well worth the time. -
Excellent set of books, so rich in description that it plays out like a film in your head. All the characters are well rounded especially Hawk and his sometimes nemesis, lover, rescuer, and pain in the ass Saradee.
Highly recommended, some of the best westerns I have read.
Tough, gritty and very adult.
Read them on your porch, smoking a quirley and swigging corn whiskey out of a jug! -
Rogue Lawman
I enjoyed this book very much
I would rather have this guy for a friend. Seems like the blond would have made him a good mate. But I don't know who's going to take who.JD -
Superlative story telling
This is a very fine read, every character is interesting and well written. It is well paced and exciting. I hated coming to the last page as I didn't want it to end.
Well done. -
Long but good
I really enjoyed this book but it was lengthy. The action never stopped but kept you turning the pages as fast as you could. I would recommend this to any lover of westerns. -
Good book
Read all of the books in order to really enjoy. Storyline continues to grow and develop. Characters are realistic and get better and better. -
Gideon Hawk, Deputy US Marshall. Honest as they come. Until the man that murdered his son goes free because of a dirty prosecutor and judge, turning him into the Rogue Lawman.
