I have a 1976 hardback reprint in French from Dupuis. Originally published in book form in 1974, this third episode of the series picks up the story arc from the end of the first book, leaving the second episode as something of an aberration.

This is much better than the second episode, both in the more detailed, more imaginative and dynamic art, and in the developing story. Although simple humour predominates, for example a dog learning to use the instant language learning device, a great spin on a tired tech trope, the plot returns to the family origins of the human protagonist, setting up a proper space family drama with hints of backstory and foreshadowing of future episodes. Of course there’s a bad guy to defeat but that too fits with the family saga.

The author has built up a nice sci-fi universe in the vein of Star Trek, with a relatively diverse and egalitarian society living in harmony with nature, in stylish high tech surrounds (with a strong sixties vibe - check out the beehive on one of the secondary characters). Simply done, but very nice. The difference with Star Trek is that this society strives to civilise barbarian planets rather than obeying the Prime Directive.

Amusingly, the colourist didn’t read the memo. In this world men and women wear similar outfits, but on some panels a girl’s legs are coloured to turn her outfit into a skirt rather than a long tunic over trousers. Clearly not quite as forward thinking. But it was the mid seventies still, and the plot requires a damsel in distress, which seems to be the turning point for the impromptu and temporary wardrobe malfunction!

Altogether this is a cracking read, a favourite when I was a child, and deserving of four stars.
