Edge of Anarchy (Edge of Collapse, #4) Reviews

Finally! We get some resolution with Pike, it seemed to be dragging on too long. Of course when the time comes, Hannah has a TSTL moment and I wanted to bang my head on the nearest desk. Thankfully, Ghost continues to be a hero.

Noah has moved from meh to total coward, Liam is about 10% less dour, Quinn is still the best character, and Bishop got the best scene in the book. I'm glad he's getting a bigger character arc. A huge showdown seems imminent.

The Edge of Collapse series continues to offer characters to root for, fast-paced plot, inevitable clashes between different camps, and a whole lot of survival. Post-apocalyptic entertainment at its best.

    Great follow up

This was a great follow up to the third book in the series building up to the final act. Since this book was written during a real-time crisis, there are a lot of emotions that we can all relate to. In addition, lots of tips and tricks thrown in that will perhaps benefit who desire to not be caught unawares. I do have mixed emotions about the turn some of characters have taken but am hopeful they will overcome their flaws and do the right thing in the end. However, I am still firmly and will always be on team Hannah/Liam....I can't wait to see how the story ends.

This is book #4 in the Edge of Collapse series I couldn't put this one down and I was hanging on every word. I love it when a book can sweep me away like that.

The characters are all unique but they all have need for survival in common. It was interesting to see how the author explored the gray area where we find out how far people will go and what lines they are willing to cross to protect and feed their families/communities.

When I finished this one I immediately picked up book #5. SO 4 stars.

This is book four of the Edge of Collapse series and the author is just producing better and better books as the series progresses. This is the best book in the series so far and was just WOW! It continues with Hannah, Liam, Ghost and baby Charlotte’s struggle to trek to Fall Creek, her previous home town. Hannah was taken captive by a man called Pike and held for five years, until an EMP struck and her prison door’s electronic lock failed. She has been beaten, tortured, starved and used as his sex toy for all these years, and was left as just a shadow of her former self and heavily pregnant. Now she, Liam and her dog Ghost, had to stop during a bad storm as she gave birth to Charlotte. Pike had been tracking them and trying to get Hannah back and they thought he had finally been killed. Nothing is quite that easy though!

Back in Fall Creek, matters are about to get worse, as Rosamond Sinclair controls the town with the militia she called in, run by her cousin Sutter. Fifty fully armed and trained men are now policing the town and have full control over food distribution and justice, often quickly and viciously given out. Rosamond promoted Noah Sheridan, Hannah’s husband and father of their son Milo, to Sheriff after the previous sheriff disappeared suddenly one day. Anyone that dissents with Rosamond’s plans is dealt with swiftly by her militia and there have been a number of occurrences in the town that have caused huge numbers of deaths and left many desperate not to make waves, to stay under the radar and just survive. Noah depends on Rosamond and the militia to find Milo’s medication, which is the only thing that keeps him alive. Some in town are not happy with how the town is being managed and soon matters will come to a head. But it will bring danger to all.

There is no electricity or comforts that modern life has made commonplace for most, and some are really struggling to make the changes to cope with all the change. Most of the homes aren’t made for life without heating or open fires and no running water, so many are being housed in close quarters in the local school building and tempers are fraying. Rosamond and her favoured people are comfortable in cabins in the wealthy Winter Haven settlement just outside of town, where they have solar power, generators and running water. Life is almost like normal there.

Hannah is almost home, but it won’t be anything like she expected it to be. She has gone through hell over the last five years and in the time since the EMP strike, she has had to dig deep to gain back her strength and also to survive the harsh conditions she has been travelling through. Many of her friends and neighbours in Fall Creek are dead or living in difficult situations and no one is as friendly as they used to be. Most are out for themselves and want to protect their own families first and foremost. Her return will be a shock for all, especially for her husband Noah, as well as those who won’t want to believe who was actually responsible for her captivity and this will mean more danger for her and those she loves.

This review has been written to try and not give away any spoilers about things that happen in the book and so issues have only been widely discussed above. This book is definitely the best in the series so far. There is lots happening to all the keys characters in the story and matters are coming to a head in so many different ways. Life is hard now for all those who have made it through the initial chaos of the EMP strike and the continuing severe winter weather hampering efforts for any sort of subsistence living for most. The EMP was so sudden that 99% of the town residents were completely unprepared for what was to come. One of my other favourite characters is Quinn’s grandmother, whose husband was a prepper and taught her lots of what she needs to survive and she is passing this on to her granddaughter. Something many of us may have wished for, as the pandemic hit us all, with no warning and vast changes to how we live.

Hannah and Liam are great characters, both have been damaged deeply in the recent past, but now have a shared goal to reach, to get Hannah home to her husband and son. They have both become stronger as they have travelled, having to deal with many attacks and struggles just to make it, but with the help of Ghost, the dog Hannah rescued from Pike’s hideaway which had been equally mistreated by Pike, they have a dogged protector to help them. The relationship between Milo and Quinn has just gotten stronger after the massacre at the church and they are a great pair to follow along. Milo has the stubborn defiance of his mother and wants the justice and equal treatment of others that his father has taught him. Another fantastic read in this series and I can’t wait for the next book which will bring about the end of the series. I will be sad to see it end, but the characters and circumstances will live on in my memories. Certainly an author to follow and a series to read, as well as their other series’. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

  • ~Bonnie~

I love everything about this series, the story keeps getting better with each book. Well I love everything about this series except for one thing. For some reason in each book there is at least one pretty big editing issue. Big enough that it takes me out of the story, and I hate that. In my copy of this book, without giving any spoilers, chapter 35 is a different version of what happened in chapter 34. I thought at first I'd lost my mind. Or maybe it was part of the story. (It wasn't) And what's really bad is that chapter 34 was a very pivotal chapter. So it was pretty disappointing to me that the editors didn't pick up on this huge mistake. Like I said, there were other issues, either small or large, in the previous 3 books as well, but I won't go into all that. This is why I give these books only 4 stars. Otherwise I highly recommend this series.

Perfect buildup for a awesome climax

More awesome writing in this story. Some closure for a few characters. Hannah gets her justice with the help of her beautiful dog Ghost. Her baby girl is beautiful and worth everything to live for. Liam is the perfect protector determined to protect Hannah and the baby girl. The Psych Pike gets what he deserves - brutally (happy dance). Noahs shock of Hannah still being a live and what happened to her is having difficulty seeing the truth of everything. Everyone it seems he trusted can't be trusted. Noah finds himself between making the right side or standing by and doing nothing in order to keep his son Milo safe. However, the friends, citizens around him are dropping like flies. The struggle to deal with the truth of the leaders real motivation has come to the fore front especially now that her two sons are dead. Her revengeful to Noah is keeping him at bay and from turning him away from her. He has to do her bidding or his son Milo won't have the medical meds he needs to survive. Quinn has gather a few together to do something about the militia takeover and put an end to the madness. A climax is coming and I'm looking forward to the next book to see if the citizens rise against the militia and the tyranny leader that has threatened Noah. All good stuff. Every character is amazingly developed and I find myself rooting for their righteousness.

    Excellent Read!

The first thing I have to say is that I'm so glad that Pike is dead! I was worried for a bit though, Liam was down and Hannah seemed too scared to do anything when faced with Pike again, which was very understandable. It took her a bit, but Hannah was able to do what she needed to in the end. I'm also glad that she made it back to town, that Noah and Milo know she didn't intentionally leave them.

Now Noah, he's starting to piss me off. He just keeps going with things, even when he has an inkling that they are wrong, he plays stupid in some ways, not really wanting to know what is going on. Even at the end when he had proof of what is going on, he caves.

I was really happy with the last scene, glad that some people in town have the smarts and balls to do something. Now if they can get a plan together and have tons of luck on their sides, they might be able to pull it off.

Kyla Stone keeps delivering action-packed suspense and drama in the fourth book of her Edge of Collapse series. I really am enjoying how she develops her multi-dimensional characters. I'm looking forward to her next book out soon! Can't wait!

Another great book in an already gripping series.
This series is full of strong characters that you can’t help championing as they tackle things no one should ever have to.
There are poignant moments that will touch your heart and have you reaching for the tissues. There are also moments where peoples weakness of character and unwillingness to see the truth will make you want to cry out in frustration.
Very well written, as are all of Kyla Stones books.

  • Sandra "Jeanz"

The book starts out with Quinn & Milo out walking in the extra thick and heavy snow. Even after all both of them have been through they can’t seem to escape trouble or seeing things they perhaps shouldn’t. They are in the Winter Haven area that Milo is living with his father, Noah, the Chief of Police live. Those that live at Winter Haven have been assigned their houses by Rosamund, as the usual occupants aren’t staying in them as they were more holiday homes. Winter Haven is quite “new age” in that they have solar power which of course means showers, hot water, better cooking facilities and much easier living conditions too. Anyone living at Winter Haven is considered lucky and most fortunate by those who don’t live there. So, its not really surprising when some of the Fall Creek residents decide they should have one of these large, all modern conveniences, solar powered homes for themselves. The Winter Haven resident they choose to oust is the community bank manager Darryl Wiggins. Without going into much detail there is a scuffle going on and a couple of Militia Members, Sebastian Desoto (Mattias Sutter’s second in command) & James Luther. The same two men who in Quinn’s opinion had barged into her grandmother Molly’s home and stolen her canned and preserved foods. Despite being told to be careful around these men when Quinn sees them shooting those who were attempting to take Darryl’s home, she literally flashes back to when their leader Mattias Sutter shot her mother. When Milo runs towards the men shouting for them to stop shooting, Quinn cannot help but become involved. The action forced by Milo involving himself in the action, puts an even bigger target on Quinns back than she had before in the eyes of the Militia’s second in command Desoto. Quinn isn’t the only one with a target on her back either, as Liam finds himself in danger, though its nothing he can’t handle, it’s the fact that puts others around him in danger too that irks him into planning some sort of action. Initially he wants to walk away but when it becomes clear his new friends intend to fight back, he agrees to stay and help in the fight.

At just 10% into the Edge of Anarchy I found that I had easily slipped back into the harsh new reality the characters are living in and the new situations they were coping with. I enjoyed continuing to adore the great characters I had come to love so far, such as Hannah, Liam, Quin, Milo and Molly (& Ghost of course). This book also has those characters that you “love to hate” like Sutter and most of his men. Then there’s the characters that I initially felt okay about, such as the Superintendent Rosamund Sinclair who has been increasingly showing a rather darker, underhand side of herself and I even found myself doubting Noah who I had adored earlier in the series. I just don’t like who he is becoming now he is Chief of Police and seems firmly set under Rosamund’s steely grip and influence! Edge of Anarchy felt even more fast paced and so quick to read. Had I had the time to sit I just know I would have read it in one go!!

My immediate thoughts upon finishing reading this book were Wow! Amaaaazing! Action packed from the beginning to the end! What “side” will Noah choose? Will Noah and his wife Hannah even be able to rekindle whatever love was left in their marriage, or has too much time passed? Hannah has changed both physically & mentally. Can everyone else come to terms with and accept those changes? Who is the right man for Hannah? I know who I want her to be with!

To sum up I have tried really hard not to give away spoilers in this review which is why it will probably come across as less detailed, maybe vague review. If you have read the series so far then Edge of Anarchy is an absolute must read. If you haven’t read any of the series so far you need to start it now! I am really looking forward to the next book already too!

Still going strong! This entry was pretty much on the level of the previous one (as far as star rating). I still had my handful of complaints and grumbles, namely with the blatantly (still-existent) predictable aspects, but nothing that was strong enough to derail my momentum or drive to finish. My enjoyment still exists, though I must admit that I'm curious if the remaining books in the series will continue to be "just shy" of where they started, or if they will lose steam and be even worse (which I doubt will happen, but...still). *Crossing fingers*

Anyway, we're all crossing over at last! This is the first book in the series in which all characters finally intersect into each other's paths. It's also one that starts off with an immediate bang, throws you right back into the grind without slow buildup. At this point in time, there's no point for buildup anyway. Liam and Hannah are closer to her hometown, but sadly are still being pursued by Pike, who they foolishly thought was dead and gone. Now that Hannah's giving birth to her child, things get even MORE complicated. Meanwhile, Noah's handle on being a cop in a town that is falling more apart is becoming a heavier load to bear. Can any of these folks still hold on and stand strong in their various burdens?

As expected, there are a few new revelations in this book, a couple of which I didn't see coming. Now that folks have finally met, adversaries and their motives are more revealed and fleshed out, though there's still more work to be done in that department (no doubt stuff that will come later). As I said earlier, though, my issues with this book (and all its predecessors) stemmed mostly from the predictable and way-too-obvious aspects. In addition to this, I feel like some character arcs and/or personalities, once coming further into fruition, were grossly exaggerated. Villainy felt over-the-top, even cartoony. Character feelings and/or expressions towards others often felt sophomoric, like I'm reading a high-school drama.

That's probably why Stone (author) may have had some of her characters make decisions that were uncharacteristic, bizarre, or counterproductive to their own missions. Some sort of shock-value to shake things up, perhaps? For example, Pike had a massive advantage over Liam and Hannah when he survived that snowmobile crash at the end of the previous book, and he KNEW he had this advantage. So instead of being a smarter villain and maintaining that advantage, he decides to advertise his presence with another dead carcass like he did in book one. I was legit like, "Damn, dude, why would you do that? Now they know you're alive." Liam, too, KNEW Pike was luring him out, but still pursued anyway, making some choices that nearly got him killed.

The fact that these complaints of mine have been consistent with each book is, I admit, KIND OF worrisome, even despite the fact that I'm still enjoying myself, which I so am. I guess I just don't want things so much handed to me as I read. Let me WORK for something, ya know? Let me be SHOCKED. I don't like so many obvious things, such as Hannah and Liam being set up as love interests. Thing is, in order to do that, you have to remove the complication that is Noah. So, it's my prediction that Noah is gonna become more and more unlikable as a character so that it can justify Hannah being with Liam instead. I mean, I love Liam and Hannah and I certainly wouldn't complain if/when they become official, but...I just think it's just sorta tragic to taint another character to achieve this.

Anyway, I'm rambling now. But it ain't like anyone's out there reading this stuff anyway lol. Onward!

This is another great book in a wonderful series. Definitely not a standalone, but well worth reading the whole series of books.

Liam, Hannah, Ghost and baby Charlotte are still trying to reach Hannah's family in Fall Creek, Michigan. But, what will they find if they finally reach their destination? Hannah is desperate to get back to her husband and son after 5 years of captivity, but will it be a dream come true? Or, will the events of the EMP make it something less desirable?

Without giving away too much of the story, I will say that this book brings out all the feels: Love, anger, redemption, fear/terror, betrayal, and sorrow.

The characters in this series are totally relatable and grow on the reader until you feel like they are family. The villains are truly horrible, the heroes are just that, and the other characters are regular, flawed humans.

I judge a book a lot by how I feel while reading it. This book totally consumed my emotions from start to finish. I found myself crying, cheering, wanting to throttle someone, and more as I listened to this book.

And, Ghost is my all-time favorite doggy hero! What an amazing animal he is and the author really makes him feel real.

The narrator does a great job and keeps the story moving at the perfect pace. My only fault with this book is that it ends on unfinished business and I have to wait for the author to get the next one written! I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/publisher and chose to review it.

I liked the pacing here. It was so satisfying when she killed Pike.
The story is still good enough that I want to know more.

I'm having more trouble with the character of Noah. I never liked the story from the perspective of the people in Fall Creek but now it's getting worse. In the prior books his character is of a solid person doing his best under conflicting pressures. But he appears to have been hit with a stupid stick.

The whole set up of the characters emotions is good and plausible. The emotional ties between Liam and Hannah are well done and believable. Noah's reactions to the new baby and Liam and Hannah herself are all believable and tragic, all good drama. But I just don't buy his gross stupidity. Nothing in the previous story makes me think he would hide information from Hannah or Bishop and nothing makes me think he would help Rosamond.

I find his reactions hard to fit in to the existing universe. He would Run or Fight. I could more plausibly see him try to get Liam killed because of his jealously than seen him on his current path.

Okay, that is a lot of text about the interpersonal relationships in a story .... which should be taken as a further endorsement of the book. The people feel real and I care about them.

Finally the long pursuit of Pike chasing Hannah has ended. Liam and Hannah are getting closer and I’m having mixed feelings about that. I want her with her family, but Noah is killing me. So I’m leaning more towards Liam at the moment. I know it will hurt Milo. But I think my mind is made up about Noah after this book. Your son was choked by one of the militia and he didn’t confront the guy! Am I missing something? When we got to the part with him afterwards, it was like he didn’t even know about it. Maybe he doesn’t know, but it seems like Quinn wouldn’t leave that part out. You finally get your wife back and you don’t think to ask who took her or what happened? No matter how horrible I would want to know what happened. Rosamond in no uncertain terms threatened Milo, and Noah is still “acting” like she’s blameless. Hannah has to know eventually if Rosamond believes Pike is Charlotte’s dad she’s gonna take her. Especially after losing both sons. But maybe she won’t believe it.

She’d stayed alive for five torturous years for her son. For her daughter, she’d come back to life.

Odio a Noah "como-sea-su-apellido". Lo supé desde el primer libro. Solo hay una palabra para describirlo COBARDE.

Uf al menos tenemos uno fuera ya. Pike? púdrete.

Milo y Quinn se roban la escena. Son preciosos. Quiero entrar allí y abrazarlos.
blockquote> Someone’s pissed off,” Milo said.

“Don’t say pissed. Your dad will think you got it from me.”

“I did get it from you.”

Solo sigo leyendo por ellos dos.
    “Go to hell!”

    “Language, Small Fry,” she said.

    “He deserves it!”

    “Can’t argue with you there.”

Y por Hannah y Liam. Ellos son el endgame.
“You’ll likely lose. People you love will die. A lot of people.”

“Did I mention that he’s also an optimist?” Hannah said.

Ah, y Bishop merece su felicidad después de todo lo que le ha pasado.

    The suspense is killing me!

I've been with these characters through four books now and feel quite close to them. All along you could feel the suspense building and you just knew eventually certain things were going to happen. Nevertheless, when the characters finally found themselves at the climatic point the suspense felt like it was killing me. I had a hard time - had to take breaks! That seems like the mark of a successful thriller doesn't it? When the reader holds their breath so much they have to take a break !?! Then, just when the end comes and you think it's going to be over, there is a new twist entirely and you learn there is going to be a sequel! I can't wait for the next one, really, I don't know how I'm going to make it - the suspense is killing me!!

  • Sherry

I absolutely loved it. I love this whole series. And I love Ghost-He is my hero! Very well written, has unexpected twists & turns...very likable characters (well mostly).
The journey has been hell for Hannah to get back to her family. She's battled the freezing cold snow, hypothermia. Being chased by a madman, all while being 9 months pregnant. But, is this what she envisioned for her homecoming. It is nothing like she hoped and dreamed it would be like all these years. Now she must face more dangers to keep her family safe.
I cannot wait until the next book to see what happens in Fall Creek. Totally fantastic read...I may have to read it again.

  • Naz

OMG finally!!! Goddamn Pike is finally dead. Like a horror movie I thought he’d get up again but Ghost took care of that, Thank goodness! So satisfying. So, I’ve been holding off judgement on Noah since his appearance in the second book but I can now really say I don’t like him at all. He’s a spineless coward, and I agree 100% with Liam’s assessment of him, “indecisive, and willfully blind”. There was another word he used too but I just can’t remember it now. Still love Hannah, Quinn, Milo, Liam, and Molly. Great characters. Love this series, can’t wait to see how it ends. Please don’t kill off my faves!

    🎧 Audio Review 🎧

I knew I was going to hate having to wait for book 5 LOL. This book was different for me than the others. The beginning was amazing with so much action and excitement going on. Then towards the ending it started to change. I still really enjoyed it but I won't say I'm thrilled that a character I loved and thought was one of the good ones is starting to go weak and change. It feels a little like he was made to change so the other characters fit into the story which made me sad. I hope it's just me and he will be himself again in the next book.

Narration was great again, thankful that they don't change narrators.

    Not sure how I’m feeling

I’m loving the story but I’m finding myself increasingly annoyed by hannAh. The fact that she is contemplating taking milo away from Noah? Like what? You are a stranger to him and Noah has been a great dad. Yes they have him over a barrel with the medication thing yes he’s starting to see the light but she’s just seems so against him even though she fought so hard to get back to him. I’m kind of hating the whole love triangle in this story I think I spent three books hoping she gets home to be thrown a weird last minute twist with the Liam angle and it’s not doing it for me feels off. Quinn and ghost are amazing. Love love Bishops story line.
