    Noah, Milo and Quinn's story:

Surviving in a post EMP world is proving to be survival of the fittest ,so to speak.Food is becoming scarce and people's tensions are high. Noah,a police officer and Milo, his son are Hannah's family. All they have in this world are each other. Enter Quinn. A snarky sixteen year old. Resilient and brave. She's estranged from her Mother,a heroin addict and lives with her grand parents. She turns out to be quite the heroine and there for Milo in a big way.

    I'm addicted.

There are 7 books in the series. 😱

  • RedRedtheycallmeRed

It started strong, and ended with quite a bloodbath, but the in between dragged a bit. I was a little annoyed that the characters from the first book aren't in this one at all.

It's a little crazy how fast things fall apart after the EMP, literally less than a week and things are in utter chaos.

Noah was a "meh" character, I kept waiting for him to wake up and notice what was really going on around him. His priority is keeping his son Milo safe, but it seems to blind him to everything else. Several times he has a "prickle of unease" but he frustratingly ignores it.

Quinn was a much better character. Snarky and resourceful for a teenager, I enjoyed her character much more than Noah.

  • Tapasya

Awesome beginning but dragged later on.

Overall this book was nice as the previous book. But it was not the exact continuation of the previous book. It was about what was happening at other side.
I hope the next book will continue from the first book because I really want to know what happens next.

    Truly Heart Wrenching!

She has a way of telling this story that really tugs at your heart. So very detailed! I love how she jumps from Hannah's point of view in the first book to her husband Noah's point view in the second book. Keeps the reader interested and wanting to continue reading!

  • Michelle

I was aware that this instalment was taking a slightly different direction and I was not sure whether I would like it or not. However, I loved it. The pace & atmosphere is different to the previous book. I loved that I learnt more about the characters mentioned in the first book, that there is more occurring.

At the beginning I needed to stop reading for a little while because I have a phobia of heights and the way in which the author described a situation was very real. I felt as unwell as I would if I was that situation. There also are truly heart breaking moments in this book.

I am looking forward to reading book 3. I’m interested to see what happens when all the characters combine. It will be epic. This isn’t a bog standard post apocalyptic book, there are elements of a thriller in the storyline ~there is a lot to be revealed!

Kyla Stone’s post-apocalyptic series is gripping and well worth a read for every fan of the genre looking for action, adventure and a terrifying psychopath.

    Shocking and thrilling

Wow, constant action and thrill after thrill kept my attention glued to each page. I thought the author did a great job catching the devastating environment, the desperation of everyone trying to just stay alive and keep from starving. I thought the author did an excellent job showing how human beings being in desperate situations change for the worse and are capable of doing unspeakable acts out of character. Constant Danger around every corner has become an everyday routine. Some of the scenes are brutal and horrific and not for the weak mind. Survival becomes challenging and full of sacrifices. This story was such a shocking and thrilling read. I'm totally hooked and looking forward to reading the next book in series. I want to see the bad guys taken down and the good citizens survive the cruelty of humanity. There is only one other thing worse than a desperate person trying to survive and forced to do unspeakable acts like killing others and that is a government or person of power setting their community up for failure just for their own personal gain and power over individuals they think are beneath them. Between the EMP, crazy murders, desperate citizens fighting to stay warm and having food to feed their children or themselves, and power hungry politicians full of greed that only look out for themselves, the idea that war or another country has attacked them is all forgotten and doesn't matter. No, the only thing that matters is surviving from day to day. Humanity has become sick and twisted.

    Excellent Read!

    ONE MAGNIFICENT ADVENTURE!!!
It's getting deep! Kyla rocks this baby to it's core as we witness the struggles and strife, heartache and defeat, pulling closer and supporting one another through thick and thin. A raging tempest of inexplicable circumstances and catastrophic events explodes with intense drama, spiraling intrigue, unnerving danger and electrifying suspense blasting this little fella to life spectacularly. Add turmoil, loss, anarchy, misgivings, massacre, desperation, torment and gut-wretching situations along with a boatload of sinister deeds, you have one chart topping, masterpiece. Forging ahead, throttle wide open, dodging petrifying twists and horrendous turns, propelling it into a tailspin with a mind-blowing culmination. The characters are authentic and original with qualities and traits that transforms into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. Remarkable job Kyla, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

    Book 2 of the series.

Here we meet Quinn, a feisty teenaged girl, who through the book turns out to be just as capable, if not more, than some adults. Quinn and Milo (Hannah and Noah’s son) become somewhat of a “team” looking out for each other throughout the book. Without each other, I don’t think either would have survived. She’s smart, honest, has been given hard knocks in life from birth. Her loving Gramps and Granny were currently taking care of her until Gramps had an incident in the ski lift after the EMF -electromagnetic malfunction. Which caused most everything electrical in the world to collapse. Some things can be jimmied to work, others not.

Unfortunately something catastrophic like this, causes people to panic. Sheer Chaos ensues. Some people come together for the greater good for self and others. Others lose their senses and panic and are out of control. They either don’t want direction or they need direction. And then there are the others who use incidents like this to take over and control in a predatory, manipulative fashion for their own selfish reasons.

As in the other books of this series, I learned of some new survival tips.

  • Endangered

The first book was a little slow but had an interesting and unique plot. This book doesnt include any characters from the first one, but I understand that they are clearly setting up for book three in the series... which I will not be reading.

This was one of the most dull and predictable stories in I've ever read from this genere. I suppose those who deem it exciting probably haven't read dozens of EMP survival series. If that's the case, the carnage at the end is enough to lock you in for the next book. After 2 complete books, the story is only about 7 or 8 days into the EMP event.

    1. EMP Event Begins.
    2. Good guy established.
    3. Bad guy established.
    4. Good guy faces moral dilemma
    5. Bad guy attacks.
    6. People die.
    7. Resources become thin.
    8. Battle begins.

Had the author merged book 1 and 2, taken out all of the babble bullshit used to increase page count, and focused on the unique story line this could have been a phenomenal read.

A Sockwalloper Of An EMP Series By Kyla Stone

Okay, I get it, my higher power has commanded me to become a Stone Clone and read everything Ms. Kyla writes. Message received, this gal has got her finger firmly on the EMpulse in this second book in this series. Real characters, real villains, realistic events, the feeling that this is the way things could really go. Where is number three?

  • Jena

Sometimes authors just kick your ass with their writing.
Kyla Stone writes characters you love, and in the harsh reality of this postapocalyptic winter, that can be heartbreaking.
    Amazing series!

  • RiShin

    Wish i could give this a 4.5
This book to me is much better than the first book since it shows the actual effects/consequences of the EMP attack on a society relative to the first book which only had a few charcters.
This will be a series, I finish as I cannot wait to see Pike Liam and Hannah encounter Noah Julian and co.

  • Phil

The 2nd book in the Edge Of Collapse series was thrilling and dramatic. It really makes me think "what would I do if there was an EMP? Would me and my loved ones survive?" Great story telling, character development, and excitement in every chapter. I can't wait to read the 3rd book.

This is book two of the Edge of Collapse series and covers the story of Hannah’s husband, Noah Sheridan and their son Milo. Hannah disappeared from their home on Christmas Eve five years before, after they had a fight and she left to cool off. She has never been seen since. Noah and Milo have coped with her absence, but Noah has found it hard to combine his role as a small town cop, with being a single dad. He always takes Christmas Eve off and spends it with his son, this year out at a ski resort about an hour away from home. He gets a call asking for him to come into work and his son wants to have one more ride up on the ski lift.

They start up the hill, on the ski lift, with only a couple of other seats filled as the lift stopped briefly before continuing. A minor fault maybe? The ride stops again suddenly, as all the lights go off all around. Noah’s phone no longer works and nobody seems to be taking much notice of the fact they are stuck on the ski lift, with a blizzard beginning. Other disasters occur all around the ski resort and they are left hanging there. Behind Noah and Milo are one of their neighbours, Quinn and her elderly grandfather. In another seat is a young college couple. Noah realises no-one is going to come for them and they have to make an effort to get down. The young lad volunteers, as Noah has his son to look after, but it doesn’t go well.

The fight for survival has begun and they will all have to dig deep to get off the ski lift and make their way home. No cars or phones are working. Aircraft are falling from the skies and they have been left alone in one of the worst storms in Michigan history. When they get back to the town, Noah soon realises how difficult it is going to be to keep his son safe as his medical condition doesn’t allow for him to be stressed. It could be fatal! A lot of the town folk are ill prepared for what is to come and arguments over food, water and wood for heat are all too soon to raise their heads. Noah has to return to work to help keep order, but this means taking Milo with him after their usual babysitter succumbs to the loss of power and cold.

The whole country has gone dark and there are some from the dregs of society, who use this situation to take what they want with force. The town has some well-known local criminals and ‘bad families, with numerous cousins, brothers and extended family about, all with their own needs and lack of control. Some of them are drug users and getting their next fix is all they want. Stores of food are now the new currency and they will rob anyone they can to get food to trade for drugs. They are armed, operating on the fringes of society and live mainly on the outskirts of the town. The local church is well prepared with a food bank, built up and stocked by its congregation and a strong pastor called Bishop and his wife. Bishop is a good friend of Noah’s since their college days, as well as their town councillor’s son Julian. But the other son, Pike, is a weird one and Noah doesn’t like him at all. He hasn’t returned to town as of yet, which if you have read book one, you will know all about.

The friendships between neighbours and others in the small town are starting to collapse within less than a week. The town councillor is trying to use the small police force and military volunteers to help out, but she wants the local church to help share its food stocks with all, even though it is already putting up residents, mainly from its own congregation, who need food and heat to survive. Others without the ability to get water or to heat their homes are being helped in the local school hall, but stocks are dwindling fast. There is a very disturbing event near the end of the book, which left me thinking I knew exactly who it was that set it up, and left me completely shocked and horrified with what some will do to get what they think they deserve or want! Quinn, just a teen herself, is a really strong character and makes the book along with Milo. Noah has some serious decisions to consider about whose side he should align himself with, as some friends are not really the friends they are pretending to be. There are wolves dressed up as sheep in his close proximity and he may be getting played!

Another shocking tale of events after an EMP strike and the post-apocalyptic world that the survivors are left in. The normal morals of most are soon discarded as the strong take what they want and those from the fringes of society use force to get what they can’t be bothered to work for or help to provide. The weak will soon fall and those who were ill or disabled often have little chance of making it, unless they have a strong person at their side. This is certainly a genre that the author writes about extremely well and always leaves you waiting for the next instalment with great anticipation. I can’t wait for Edge of Darkness to see what will happen with Hannah, Liam and Ghost from book one and hopefully more of Noah, Milo and Quinn as well. They are fascinating characters and deserve to be loved. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

  • Gerri Johnson

I seem to be loving this series of stories. However this book was a bit slow at times and it dragged on. I would like to read more interaction between the other books too Excellent stories!

  • Sj

The first book I didn’t find was as awful but the second book of the series very obviously shows that this author has an obsession with murdering black and brown people. And no less in a church and the author had to let you know what race certain characters were before being murdered when it had no use to explain their race. And the talk of a militia in Michigan after we clearly witnessed what the militia’s in Michigan prepare themselves for. I can’t believe there hasn’t been more said about this author and her disgusting very obvious racist views in a book. This book is truly awful and I can guarantee the rest of the series will follow along the same path of just murdering black and brown people. This author needs therapy.

  • Sandra "Jeanz"

I was looking forward to reading this one after really enjoying the prequel and bk1 Edge Of Collapse too. I knew this one was going to be introducing and following the new characters of Noah & Milo, the husband and son of Hannah who is featured in Edge Of Collapse.

I really like the cover which is depicting a scene from within the book, of police officer, Noah holding his 8 year old son, Milo’s hand in one hand and a rifle in his other hand. It also shows the awful snowy weather conditions that are occurring throughout the book too. The cover does its job well, it makes you want to know more about the characters featured. The genres I have seen listed for this book are Sci-fi, Post-Apocalyptic and Thriller which describe the book well.

The book is told from the point of view of Quinn, Noah and Octavia. Noah is Hannah’s husband and is still grieving the disappearance of his wife, though he tries to hide it for the sake of their 8 year old son Milo. Milo has Addison’s Disease which can be exacerbated by stress so could quickly become a problem because of the world they are now living in. Since the power grid has gone off. With no communication there will be no trucks delivering the medication Milo needs to lead a fairly normal life. The book begins with Noah talking to a police colleague and close friend Julian about a body he has just found. Julian is explaining that Chief Briggs is calling everyone into work on Christmas Eve for this job. Noah usually takes Christmas Eve off to spend time with his son Milo, to keep their minds off the anniversary of the disappearance of Hannah. Before going and sorting a sitter for the now disappointed to be going home Milo, Noah says they can ride the “rocket launcher” ski lift up the new ski slope, though they will not be skiing the intermediate slope, they will ride the lift back down too. It’s whilst they are in the air on the ski lift that the power grid goes off! Stranding Noah, Milo and the others on the lift up in the air. Noah tries to keep everyone calm, talking to the others riding the lift. There are a young couple called Brock and Phoebe, and a teen girl Quinn with her grandfather too. It soon becomes apparent that someone needs to get down off the lift and find a way to help the others stranded quickly when Quinn’s grandfather’s pacemaker stops working and the stress causes him to become very ill, very quickly.

Later the book deals with how Falls Creek copes with the prospect of no more supplies of any kind, and no government help on the way to help with their situation. The residents of Fall Creek struggle with heating their homes and food supplies pretty quickly. Though the local high school is opened as a centre for people to stay in and a local church has food supplies that they are handing out to help people too. Sadly, we see the worst of people in a rapidly worsening situation.

Quinn’s mother Octavia isn’t a great person to be around at the best of times as she is a drug addict who thinks of her next fix and her no good, violent boyfriend Ray Schultz before her own daughter. Quinn spends a lot of time at her grandparents who are more like parents to her and being at the Bittersweet Ski Resort is a treat with her Grandfather for her sixteenth birthday, that day. When things get tough Octavia plans on taking whatever she wants and needs from Quinn’s grandparents and when Quinn stands up to Octavia and Ray, things become violent quickly.

Noah has to juggle caring for his son, Milo and keeping track of his medication as well as the increasing pressure on the small police force in Fall Creek. His best friend and colleague, Julian’s mother Rosamund, is the Town Superintendent and she tries to co-ordinate help for those in need whilst worrying about her older son who has not made to Fall Creek yet. Some of Rosamund’s suggestions are not so popular to begin with but she is trying her best to come up with solutions to the problems her community is facing.

I soon became attached to the character of Quinn, who is going along with her birthday treat despite not being really into it. She knows her grandfather is trying his best and for Quinn the real treat is the time she is spending with him. Quinn knows she is lucky to have such caring grandparents and appreciates the fact she can turn up at their house anytime she needs to escape her mother Octavia her latest boyfriend Ray. Quinn has her own bedroom at her grandparents and knows she is always welcome there. The skills Quinn’s grandparents have taught her such as survival skills, and hunting skills will soon come in very useful. Quinn is a quiet, yet strong resourceful character. What starts out as Quinn babysitting Milo soon turns into a job for Quinn caring for three children in exchange for earning some food and supplies for her and her grandmother.

One character I am a little undecided on whether he is “good or bad” is Julian, he seems to have a temper and comes across quite arrogant, moody and prone to maybe violent outbursts a few times within the book. He seems to want to do the best for the community of Fall Creek and isn’t afraid of perhaps straying into a grey area to do that rather than only upholding the exact rules of the law. I hope we have more to come from this character in the future books. This may sound a little cryptic but it will be interesting to see who he would choose to side with, his half brother or best friend who is like a brother.

My immediate thoughts were that I really enjoyed this story, even though it did not contain the same characters that were in Edge Of Collapse. This book has left me wondering if half-brothers Gavin & Julian are more alike than perhaps I first thought. Or does the apple not fall from the tree with Gavin taking after his mother Rosamund maybe? Who is the mystery person whose actions have devastating consequences?

To sum up I could honestly go on and on about this book and this series so far, but I am trying so hard not to give any spoilers or hint at anything. (Sorry for being vague, but you will understand when you read the book) You need to read this book, as I did! I did not want to put it down. This is the third book by Kyla Stone that I have read and I certainly intend on trying some of her other series as well as continuing to read this series.

  • Jackie McMillan

"It was surreal. Like something out of one of her favourite science fiction novels. She read all the classics she could - I, Robot, Ender's Game, 1984, Snow Crash, Fahrenheit 451. She'd even read some of those crazy end-of-the-world books from Amazon." (p. 14)

It's funny when a book references itself as a crazy end-of-the-world book from Amazon (exactly how I came to be reading this one). While it's a continuation novel, running on from Hannah Sheridan and Liam Coleman's story outlined in Edge of Collapse, this story deals with Noah Sheridan's perspective during the same time period.

Reading this EMP survivalist style fiction during COVID-19 has shed light on some issues for me. It seems like Australians being mocked for stockpiling extra toilet paper were only doing what was sensible: "She had a bunch of salt containers, jugs of bleach, jars of instant coffee, and oil, which could be used in lamps, not just for cooking. At least ten packages of toilet paper were stuffed in the rack underneath the cart." (p. 115)

While again, there's nothing earth-shattering here, this is a competent, fast-paced novel that's enjoyable to read when you're trapped inside during a pandemic.

Since this is the second book in the Edge of Collapse series, I was expecting to have the story pick up where book one left off. I was very surprised when this book instead focused on different (but closely related) characters to those we met in book one.

Noah Sheridan is still reeling from his wife's disappearance 5 years ago. Now a single father, he struggles to balance his job as a policeman with taking care of Milo. When an EMP hits Michigan, Noah and Milo are stuck on a ski lift on one of the coldest days of the year. What a horrible place to be stranded!

This book is full of tense moments from start to finish, with plenty of action along the way. Be prepared to be horrified by the cruelty of some residents and the big hearts of others. I shed a few tears at the deaths of some characters and cheered at the resilience of others (Quinn).

The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, does a fantastic job and her performance makes an already great book even better. I can't wait to see what Kyla Stone has in store for her characters in the rest of this series and look forward to having the different groups reunite at some point.

  • Donna

This story starts out with Noah and his son at a ski resort. They decide to take a ride up the ski lift. It stalls while they are riding up. There are others on the lift too. They all wait, assured that someone will fix the problem or come rescue them. It is snowing hard and it is cold.

Good things do not happen on a stalled ski lift while it is snowing and very cold.
Noah and his son do manage to survive this and return to town to find an EMP has shut off everything electrical and no shipments are arriving to replace the ones used up, like food.

Noah is the husband of Hannah from the first book. He is a good man and cars for their son.
Hannah has been missing for five years. He has no idea what happened to her.

Noah is a police officer and as usual when civilization shuts down and people get desperate there are those who want to take everything and use their power to do so.

I can't wait to see book 3 and I hope that Noah and Hannah and Liam will reconnect. This is an excellent story!

  • Pam Shelton-Anderson

This book 2 focuses on 2 characters mentioned in the first. I always thought that being in a small elevator during an EMP would be the worst, but on a ski lift has to be a close second. We get to see how a small town tries to cope with this unprecedented disaster while in the midst of a Michigan winter. We have the standard evil miscreants as well. I rather like Quinn who is young but made of the strong stuff. Presumably the next book will runtime these characters with those from book 1.

  • Vicky Quenault

I enjoyed this book even more than the first one in the series. The characters are vivid and the emotions evoked by their stories are gritty and raw.
Cant wait for the next book when hopefully the two story lines converge and all the characters come together.

  • Sue Stinnett

    Excellent

Just reading this book showed me just how unprepared I would be in this scenario. This is not an unrealistic book but a book of reality.

  • Chris

Author is clearly very anti-gun and uneducated about firearms. Trying to tell a survivalist type story and the evils of the AR-15 at the same time just doesn't compute.
