This is another highly addictive series I am really into at the moment, so as soon as I knew it was available to read, I wanted it! I ended up with a migraine with all the stress of the present situation in the world or I would have read it even quicker than in three reading sessions. I warn you it will be one you will hate to have to put down!
I think the covers are really great, well thought out and represent the series well as well as being cohesive as a series too. The genres I have seen listed I totally agree with as being post-apocalyptic, along with some mystery, a lot of thriller like sections with a little suspense thrown in all because something has happened, in this case an EMP and ripped people out of their comfort zone and some element go out of control. It makes for a fantastic mix to read that should appeal to a wide audience. On another note all the food shortages and illness with not enough medication and other problem from within the book have become even more believable when you compare it to our world at the moment.
In this book the whole gang of characters are back to being featured. We get Hannah & Liam still trying hard to stay one step ahead of Pike who is still ruthlessly trailing them intent on revenge. Hannah & Liam have to make the difficult decision of whether to stop to get the treatment that Ghost badly needs.
Then there is Noah heading into a strange situation where certain people he would have trusted with his life are soon seen in a different light. There’s the aftermath of the Crossway Massacre where Noah’s own son Milo only made it out alive thanks to the quick thinking of Quinn and a sudden hesitation, maybe a small act of love from her mother Octavia.
Fall Creek wants retribution, but in what form. It’s already been proven that a jail cannot hold this local gang, and why should they sit in relative comfort and be fed everyday whilst locals do all the work finding what little food is available. A decision is made by Superintendent Rosamund Sinclair and Sutter the man in charge of the heavies she has brought in to protect Fall Creek. Its not a punishment that Noah is comfortable with but how can he argue with Sutter when it is him and his men that have sourced and brought back vital medication for his son Milo.
Sutter and his men are put in charge of collecting “tax” in the form of 10% of any food supplies people have in their home. This has also been rubber stamped by Rosamund Sinclair. When the men arrive at Molly and Quinn’s home, they seem to enjoy antagonising them and go further taking over half the supplies Molly has built up by canning and prepping for years. When Quinn protests, she is just threatened and her grandmother tells her to be quiet, fearful of what the men could do.
Molly continues helping out her local neighbourhood, explaining to them how to purify water and sending them a little food. Molly enlists Quinn & Milo into delivering the packages. Its on one of these deliveries that Quinn makes a grisly discovery, which she once again bravely shields Milo from.
There’s an out break of stomach issues due to people not boiling their water enough which means Noah, and best friend Julian going out on a search looking for medical supplies. Julian isn’t impressed when they are joined by another friend of Noah’s (who I won’t name as it, kind of could be a spoiler). It is this third person that eventually realises somewhere they may find the medical supplies they need and others may not think of trying there. All the Doctors surgeries and Hospitals are either empty, little or no supplies, or have been requisitioned and taken to the nearest FEMA camp.
I could seriously go on and on, so much happens with both sets of characters yet they have yet to all meet up in person. This book left me with so many questions as not everyone agrees with how Rosamund is running the town with her heavies, the fact they all have power, heat, and running water in the houses they have taken over in Winter Haven. Some of the Winter Haven Homes only housing one person despite having four bedrooms!! When Noah asks Molly and Quinn to move in with him and Noah, Molly immediately refuses saying she is used to her own home she shared with her husband and her and Quinn can manage how they are. Molly isn’t so keen on how Fall Creek is being run and despite stopping Quinn from getting in an argument with Sutter and his men I think she has a plan or two up her sleeve.
I don’t know which side Noah will end up on, for his sake and his sons, Milo, I hope its on the “good” side which I personally think will be tied in with whatever it is Molly will come up with for the future to help her friends and neighbours. I think Noah has some difficult decisions coming soon and though she may say she loves him like a son, I think Rosamund will do almost anything to make him toe the line on her side. Noah is well liked in the community, so that reflects well on Rosamund. With Noah appearing to be in favour of her rulings the rest of town follows someone they like and respect more easily. So far Noah has been one of my favourite characters but dependent on what happens next, I might have my mind changed about him. Perhaps he is in need of a little back up from my other favourite character, Liam. I can’t wait to see how things will change in the next book.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing the book were, Oh wow! Scarily realistic on how people behave when things go wrong. This series honestly just keeps getting better & better!
I have so many thoughts on what might be in the near future for Liam & Hannah ... as well as Noah, Milo, Molly & Quinn and the rest of Fall Creek....so many possibilities.
So strange to be reading this during the current situation we are living through!!
To sum up. . . .hmm brilliant book containing all the characters with lots happening on both sides. This seriously is a must-read amazing series. I just want to read even more right now! -
I'm not sure I'd continue with this series if I wasn't already buying the books for my daughter. There are parts that are good, but overall it's just ok.
Liam's continuous circle of thoughts gets old really fast, so I prefer him in action mode, or just seen through the eyes of Hannah. Ghost the dog continues to be awesome.
Noah is still meh, bordering on terrible. I hope there's more focus on Bishop in the next book, he makes Noah a little more bearable.
Quinn is the best character, and I love her grandmother too. The best parts revolved around them and how the town is dealing with the fallout. -
Genres: Dystopia/Sci-fi
This is book #3 in the Edge of Collapse series and I liked it as much as I liked book #2. It toggled between the characters introduced in book #1 as well as the ones from book #2. It felt more like a complete story with all the POVs represented. They are still in survial mode and the big reunion has yet to happen....it better happen.
I liked the father/son relationship. And Quinn provided perfect balance, as well as her grandmother. As they were anchored to the story, it opened up some new possibilities.
This one seemed a little more violent then the first two books, but it went with the dark and dangerous world the author was painting. So 4 stars. -
The Edge of Collapse series is one of the best for fans of fast-paced post-apocalyptic EMP fiction.
-
Another book in the Edge of Collapse series that was full of nail-biting moments. This one brings all of the characters from the first two books together. There are many characters involved now but I’m not finding it difficult to keep track of who’s who. That’s probably because I now feel like I know them all and am so invested in the story.
I liked this one slightly less than the first two only because some parts of the story seemed too drawn out.
Overall it was another great addition to the series and I’m looking forward to book four. -
Loved that the first book introduced one set of characters, the second book introduced another set of characters, and the third book intertwined both sets of characters.

Book 3 - the post apocalyptic saga continues...
Everything and anything in town escalates on every end and this book was much more aggressive than the other. It still had the backstory of our main characters and how they were coping and moving forward; surviving through this chaos, but there was a lot of hostility, shooting and killing as one group tries to fight back and band together to cast out the dissidents and the homemade militia and save themselves and their town. It was very real and not pleasant to read, but it was the will to do whatever it takes to survive.
Wow. I’m now really addicted to this series - never thought I would be, so this is an interesting turn of events for me.
There are more survival tips in this book too. Onward and forward! -
This is book three of the Edge of Collapse series and follows both Liam, Hannah and Ghost, as well as Quinn, Milo and Noah. Their stories are now being told in the same book and you get to see them edging closer together as the journey home continues. Liam and Hannah are recovering after the attack in the library and need to find some treatment for Ghost who was badly injured, protecting Hannah from Pike. Life for Noah and his son Milo is changing and maybe not for the good of the community. Noah and the other police in Fall Creek, accompany the new militia brought in by the town’s superintendent, to the Carter’s stronghold outside of town.
It has been a number of days since the massacre at the church run by Bishop, Noah’s best friend, and they force are going after the people responsible for this atrocity. The type of revenge wanted by some will make Noah question his own actions and those of others in his community. To be able to protect them from what may be coming, how far outside his comfort zone will he have to go? Another immense snowstorm has hit the area and people are freezing, in modern homes with no way of heating them. There is a lack of food and some have had to move to a community hub, just to get warm and have a hope for being fed.
Forceful action by the new militia in town, puts a lot of backs up and leads to some very aggressive and extreme behaviour. But, this new force may be more of a danger to the community than they could ever know. Forced regulations and sharing of food stocks no longer voluntary, lead to charged confrontations and differences of opinion. On the other side of the story, Pike is getting closer and with Hannah near to popping out her baby and Ghost being badly injured, travelling by snowmobile is no longer suitable, but leaves them more vulnerable to attacks on the road and travelling much slower on the blocked roads.
The action is definitely ramping up in this instalment of the series and brings you more details of what is happening to the characters from both sides of the story. There are more dangerous people in the storyline than just Pike, and we finally get to see more about them and one in particular is uncovered by their secret actions at the end. Pike is a tenacious foe and the hope is that Hannah will reach Fall Creek safely, but whether that will go as expected is anyone’s guess. There are other issues growing in the storyline, being weaved into a complicated web and leading to some interesting and exciting developments to come.
I can’t wait, each time, for the next book in this series! With the present worldwide crisis we are all learning about social isolation and death coming without warning. This series at least can take your mind away from reality and give you something more extreme to take your mind off matters and make you realise that the world is not falling apart quite as badly as it could! I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and absolutely loved it. Anyone who likes a bit of post-apocalyptic EMP survival reading, then you need to read this one! More of us may want to follow the lifestyle of preppers, with supplies being low for lots of essential items presently. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above. -
Day to day survival
Challenging survival techniques are constantly tested with the towns citizens. Taking in a militia group to protect the town is starting to take its toll on the local citizens with total political corruption in charge. Taking from the citizens while the elite is living in luxury. Citizens are starving, freezing to death, and dieing from sickness. Hannah finally has her baby but the psycho monster after her is still out there hunting for her. The book has now brought the previous books closer in line for the build up of the plots climax. So we have Hannah, ghost, the baby, and Liam getting closer to home. We have the psycho Pike still hunting down Hannah to rid what's his. Then we have Quinn the teenager becoming more aware of what's really going on in her neighborhood and sticks close to her grandmother Molly especially after her mom gets killed by the militia. Noah and his son Milo are going through survival motions. Milo has an endearing relationship built with Quinn as she watches him while Noah does police work. Noah finds himself in positions he doesn't want. It will all come to a head soon. I look forward to the next book.
I don't think this book could stand as a stand alone because you have to know the other stories before anyone would understand the characters actions. I will say this, every character is brilliantly created. You either love them or hate them. Page to page thrill of humanity cruelty has become the norm for the day to day survival.
Excellent Read! -
Wow, things are getting worse in town. What bothers me the most is that Noah sees it happening and doesn't speak out. The woman running things knows how to keep him quiet, get his son the medicine he needs and makes sure to subtly let him know they will get him more. I get it, as a parent there is much you wouldn't do for your kid. I love how Quinn is seeing things too, how Noah doesn't speak up and I think she is starting to loose respect for him. But it's Grandma Molly who is my hero in this one. She knows what's coming, knows what battles to fight and what not to. She may be old, but she is wiley!
On the other front things with Hannah and Liam were a bit crazy! I was glad they got Ghost taken care of, but then in their bid to get Hannah home, Pike was back. They took some risky moves to try to get rid of him, I only wished it would have worked better. The one bright spot was the baby coming, I'm so glad that that came out ok, not sure that I (or the characters) could have dealt with it not. -
Post apocalyptic thriller
Great book. This book really picked up and was fast paced. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next book. -
I was and am entertained. Onto the next book!

While this entry isn't quite as stellar as the previous three 5-star reads in the series, it ain't like it sucked. Not in the least. It was still a fantastic 4-star read that kept me on the edge of my seat in more ways than one, some of those ways good, and some of them a bit less than good. Not bad. Never bad. I'm still LOVING these stories, and it's so far not slowing down. My interest hasn't waned and I'm totally very much invested in where it's gonna go.
For this go around, we get all the characters who were in separate books finally converging into one. This was excellent for the most part, because it's getting me more excited for when all the characters finally crossover with each other, which they don't do yet in this book, but I just KNOW it's coming. I adore Liam the most of all the characters, and I'm immensely curious how his endgame is gonna come about. There's directions I'm hoping for when it comes to him, but I obviously have no idea. It's gonna be great when everyone crosses paths.
Unfortunately, putting all characters in one book, as great as it was, also kinda backfired in another way. The balance of perspectives felt a bit lopsided, like there wasn't room for everyone in the same book. More often than not there was too much time spent on one perspective for several (even too many) chapters in a row, which contributed to my frustration as I was reading. I was eager to return to other perspectives left hanging and it felt like ages before getting there. I suppose that's very telling on how invested I was in the story, which is a good thing, but ugh. It got kinda annoying being forced to wait, especially when the perspectives I'm sticking with often were repetitive in content.
Another minor gripe is the ease in which I can see how things are gonna go wrong. Much of what's happening, as fun and stressful and thrilling and gruesome as it can be, is still very predictable. The setups are easy to figure out and, like I mentioned in a previous review, many forthcoming key plot points are a matter of WHEN they happen as opposed to IF they will. Fortunately, I'm still enjoying the journeys towards even the predictable outcomes, mostly because I'm attached to the characters. Thus the importance of getting me to LIKE characters! Props to Kyla Stone on that front.
Despite my grumblings and the lack of the 5th star that I so readily gave all former entries, I was still so into this thing, and I'm still super eager to move forward. -
Another awesome installment in a great series! I love the characters and the storyline. In this book, she begins to bring the characters from the first two books more closely together. Hannah, Liam and Ghost are still on the run from Pike and Quinn, Noah and Milo are just trying to survive back in Fall Creek.
Kyla Stone has created likeable (or hateable) characters that you can relate to and cheer for (or against!) You will feel all of the emotions: fear/terror, hatred, love, and hopelessness. I found myself wondering how I would react if I were living through a post-apocalyptic world. What happens when the lines between right and wrong are blurred? How far would you go to keep your family safe?
There is also enough humor in the book to keep it from being a downer. I love the dialogue between Quinn and her Grandmother and could almost picture some scenes in my mind.
Ms. Stone does an amazing job in describing medical issues and survival tips and has obviously done a lot of research in order to make her books more realistic. As a Medical professional, I appreciate the amount of time she has obviously spent in making the book truthful. The scenes with the Veterinarian were spot-on and her description of Hannah's pregnancy were perfect.
The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, does a wonderful job and adds a lot to my enjoyment of this audiobook. I can't think of a better person to do the narration.
I can't wait to continue this series and see what happens next! It is definitely nonstop action and is a great way to spend a few hours. -
I didn't enjoy this as much as the first book.
The story in Fall Creek just isn't as interesting as the story of Hannah and Liam and Ghost.
That part is riveting. The towns people, not so much. So I really like about 60% of the book. It's not that the towns people aren't interesting unique characters of their own, it's just that I want to read the first story more.
I've begun noticing a few author "ticks"- some phrases and styles that are repeated a lot.
I'm going to pause this series for a while and come back to it so those ticks don't get annoying.
Sorry for sounding so negative. I really do enjoy the story. -
Things are ramping up
It's frustrating when you feel for characters and want the best outcome, but can see the trials and tribulations they have coming. I say that in the best way which is one of the signs of a good book in my opinion. I look forward to the next book in the series and only hope that June comes quickly. -
Natürlich wurde hier das Rad, was den Storyverlauf und bestimmte Charaktere angeht, nicht neu erfunden, aber es macht Spaß und bleibt spannend.
Weiter zu Band 4. -
Great in Parts
Edge of Darkness is a good addition to the Edge of Collapse universe, picking up right from where both the stories left and trying to present them concurrently in a coherent manner. It did start a little slow, however, it made up for that in the latter half. The Liam-Hannah part of the story was phenomenal and spellbinding throughout. The Fall Creek part was kind of a mixed bag: the story following Quinn was quite interesting due to her character and the events that took place, however, the Noah part felt a little tedious. Sure, it was necessary as the majority of the world building took place in it, but it could have been done a little better, made a little more interesting. As a whole, Edge of Darkness was a pretty nice read. -
A week after an EMP left them with no power or electronics of any kind, Hannah is still struggling to be free from her past and find her way home. Liam, the man who found her in the woods and saved her life, is helping her find her way while Ghost, the giant white dog, has a serious wound he acquired while protecting Hannah from her captor who continues to hunt her. Ghost isn’t the only one hurt, as Hannah has bumps and bruises as well. They must find help for him; she can’t handle losing Ghost.
This need leads them to a veterinarian’s office in a small town. While there, Liam begins teaching Hannah how to protect herself, as Pike was still tracking her. She knows he won’t let up. She was correct to worry. Pike’s actions lead them to an empty home to hunker down for a while. All kinds of hell breaks loose while they are there.
Noah tries to care for his son and for Falls Creek. It is an impossible task. Friends are changing, and not in a good way. The people are restless, food is scarce, and everyone is scared. The townspeople are demanding justice for the killing of many of their people. The only good Noah can find through all of this is his son and their relationship with Molly and Quinn.
I find myself on edge as I continue reading. I feel the fear and stress that these characters are experiencing. It is easy to immerse yourself in this series. I want Pike gone, yet the bad guy always adds to the story. The good characters are easy to attach yourself to and I find myself rooting for them and concerned when I feel they have made bad decisions. This series is phenomenal! I can’t put these books down. I am reading book six right now and haven’t taken the time to write the reviews in between because I didn’t want to lose reading time! The Edge of Collapse Series is currently free with Kindle Unlimited. Do yourself a favor and read Edge of Collapse, book one. Be ready to kick it into gear as you will want to continue on! I’d give this book 1 star if the plot wasn’t so good. It has so much potential but the author really dropped the ball on this series.
The characters are so flat and lack any sort of personality. They all talk the same way and use the exact same phrases. They explain things the exact same way, as if it was cookie cutter snippets from a textbook. It’s so frustrating.
After the power outage, everyone somehow landed on the idea that it was an EMP and everyone just agreed. All “rumors” were facts and all of them were about explaining EMPs. It really is just one of the examples of how everything is handed to the reader. No thinking is required to read this book. Any question you might have, will be answered with copy-paste definitions. I’ll try not to give anything away but at one point Hannah mentions a poster she saw 8 years ago and then explains the definition of a possible diagnosis. Then the next sentence she is 100% certain that is what she has. We really didn’t need to know. Leave some mystery! We could’ve looked up the symptoms ourselves and figured it out or it could’ve been mentioned in a following book. But no. Diagnosis, with definition, AND outcome if left untreated were handed to us on a platter so that we wouldn’t have to waste precious energy thinking or wondering.
There is also such lack of creativity in her word choice to describe scenarios and feelings. There’s always a “tightness in his/her chest” or their “chest ached” or “their mouth went dry” and my favorite they “chewed on their lip.” The story is set in dead of winter Michigan but the author has such a difficult time exploring other ways to describe the cold. It’s as if she had never experienced winter herself. Or heard of a thesaurus.
There’s so much more I could nitpick but I’ll just say that overall the plot is great and this series had a lot of potential. Don’t expect this book to be anything above mediocre. -
Things are definitely picking up in the story. We finally combined all the characters from the first two into one book, but they still haven’t met up yet. And I’m looking forward to that. While a lot of the characters are a little long-winded and boring, things are definitely more interesting in the town. Especially Quinn, who is by far the best and most fleshed out character.
I almost quit reading after the first book, and I’m so glad I didn’t because I do believe I will probably see this series to the end. The writing is pretty good, the editing is pretty clean. Aside from some weird, random typos. And the story has managed to keep me engaged throughout where I only find myself skimming certain parts. Finally, the only remaining thing that still irks me is the description of the different races of people. They are just awkward and pull me out of the story… in a previous review I mentioned how much it annoys me that all the white people are referred to as Caucasian, but all the African-Americans are just referred to as black. That being said, there is a lot of diversity in the story, Quinn‘s grandfather is Chinese American (which is the author of course took the time to spell out🙄), and Quinn is partially Vietnamese. There are others referred to as Hispanic. But come on… Black? If you’re going to take the time to spell out all the other ethnicities, take some time with us as well. Although, in the story, the word white was finally used to refer to one of the Caucasians ONE TIME.
But I digress, aside from this annoying nuance, the stories are very engaging. -
Things are About to Get Crazy...er
This has been the only post-apocalyptic series to grab my attention in a long time. I love the strength and tenacity of the characters. I love that Hannah and her husband Noah are both pining for each other even though she's been missing (and presumed dead) for 5 years. I love that Noah is such an amazing father to their son. I also love that Liam has put his plans on hold and risked his life repeatedly for a very pregnant woman he didn't know until Black Christmas. His life would have been much simpler if he'd just walked away from her in that snowy forest.
These characters and others make this a series I want to come back to. The times are as bleak as they can be. But it's in the dark that a person's true character comes out. Some that seemed good, aren't. But these guys, this core group of people who are working their way toward each other, although they don't all know it, are the ones that shine a light in the darkness. These are the good guys that give us hope.
The author does a tremendous job of balancing the dark with the light. Of offering hope, joy, comfort, and even peace in a world that seems to have none of those commodities left to offer. It's this balance that allows such a dark subject to be so approachable. These good- but not perfect- people, who are intelligent, focused and driven continue to show that the good in people did not die with all the electronics.
The characters. The storyline. The pace. The heart. These are the things that keep me coming back to this series. -
In this book, Kyla Stone blends the two stories she began in Edge of Collapse and Edge of Madness. The female protagonist, Hannah Sheridan, aided by the ex-military Liam Coleman and Ghost, the Pyrenees Mountain dog, and the male protagonist, her husband, Noah Sheridan, move slowly towards an eventual meeting. I'm generally not a reader of series, so I find the ends of each novel a bit jarring and annoying. Once again, Edge of Darkness is fast paced, and reasonably believable, well as long as you discount the odds of actually meeting a violent psychopath who kidnaps you and holds you captive for five years, only to be released by an electromagnetic pulse attack that takes out most of continental North America. I did like that the toilet paper motif continued: "She didn't want to think about a time when toilet paper was no longer available. What would people use? Magazines? Corn cobs, like in the old days?" (p. 5) See us Aussies aren't the only ones who think of our butts in a global pandemic.

Edge of Darkness - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Edge of Darkness is Book 5 in Kyla Stone's Edge of Collapse, an EMP Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller series, that continues this devastatinglty unputdownable what if...? dystopian drama.
Having suffered five years of trauma at the hands of ruthless sadist, Gavin Stone, MC Hannah Sheridan - and her new baby, the result of rape - are reunited with her husband, Sheriff Noah (and her fast-growing son Milo, who was himself only a baby when she was taken), thanks mainly to ex-military man-turned-saviour, Liam Coleman.
Others also take their chances in returning to their homes in Fall Creek - but what fortune or disaster attends the outcasts' arrival? Who holds the reins of power now - and with what result?

Edge-of-your-seat Thriller
Each volume of this series shows Kayla Stone to be an excellent writer with a keen insight into the human mind and nature. I hope never to have to experience an apocalyptic event. Our nature is to not think such a thing can happen. But as we develop and invent newer and more sophisticated technologies we set ourselves up for just such an occurrence. Until we discover a way to "harden" our delicate devices and technology we WILL be future victims of the will of evil people and nations. My fervent hope is that we don't become like the victims in these stories. Three volumes down and endless possibilities lay ahead for our heroes, heroines and villains of all stripes. Hold on for dear life. I'm sure there are more perils to endure and victories to be won.
