Agatha Lapp lost her brother and sister-in-law when a car plowed into their buggy. They had moved to the Texas Hill Country to open an Amish B&B and were just getting settled. To honor their memory Agatha, a widow, decides to leave her home in Shipshewana to take over the operation of the B&B. She's got things running smoothly and has even expanded by adding some cabins.
When she discovers one of her guest's dead just outside his cabin, she runs for the help of her neighbor, Tony Vargas. Tony is a retired police detective still mourning the death of his wife. But this case has awakened a renewed interest in life, and he quickly finds himself determined to find the killer. What he didn't expect was the friendship that he formed with Agatha. Along with Agatha's assistant, they are motivated to solve the murder before their guests leave for home.
A "whodunit" cozy mystery that also offers some Amish wisdom and the benefits of friendship.

When Agatha Lapp’s brother and sister in law are killed in a buggy accident, Agatha moved from Indiana to the Texas property near the Guadalupe River. The plan is to honour them by continuing with the bed and breakfast they started.. When she arrives the property is more unkempt than expected but Agatha is resourceful and a hard worker. She sets to work to establish a property that will appeal to both Amish and Englischer. A widow, fifty five year old Agatha is friendly, efficient and capable .Ten months later Agatha has the the bed and breakfast and three cabin all filled. When she discovers the lifeless body of Russell Dixon in cabin 3 she runs next door where retired detective Tony Vargas lives. Was Russell Dixon’s death of natural causes as the local police initially conclude? Agatha and Tony are not convinced that is the case. But who would murder this man and why? They are determined to find out.
I settled very quickly into this cosy mystery. I liked Agatha, and the easy relationship with her employee Gina as well as the friendship that develops between Agatha and Tony. The pictures of Amish life make for interesting reading. There is a glossary of Amish terms at the front of the book but I found t wasn’t needed. It is easy enough to pick up what each word means by the context. I liked the way the story plays out and how several of the people staying at the B and B were revealed as not telling all the truth and coming under suspicion.
This is an entertaining mystery. Nothing heavy or gory but cleverly pieced together and with great characters. It captured my interest early on and maintained it throughout. It was easy to settle back and go along with this one. Well resolved, I found it an easy and enjoyable read. This is the start of a series and I would be keen to read more about these characters. -
This is the first book in Vannetta Chapman's new Agatha's Amish B&B.
Enjoy Amish cozy mysteries? Then this will be right up your alley.
This newest cozy mystery series will grab your attention as a murder takes place right away in the book. Taking place in the new Amish community in Hunt Texas, nestled in the Texas Hill Country.
She's there to make a success of running her brother's bed and breakfast .
I enjoyed seeing the interaction between the Amish and Englishers there was a good comfort level between them.
This was a real page turner for me . I really did not know who the murder was and it kept me guessing the whole way through. Though an Amish mystery the book isn't just about the Amish and I believe if you like just cozy mysteries you'll enjoy this fast paced book as well.

Ms. Chapman is a "new to me" author and I was not disappointed in this first book in her new cozy series. A smoothly paced plot and a well crafted mystery kept me turning the pages to the dramatic reveal. I look forward to more books in this series.
I received a copy of this book from my public library. -
Dead wrong by Vanetta Chapman is a delightful murder mystery. Her characters are likable and realistic. The beautiful Texas Hill country is a wonderful setting and I loved the attitudes of the characters. Agatha Lapp inherits a B&B from her late brother. She is a good person, not a goody goody. There is a difference. I also liked her neighbor, retired detective Tony Vargas, again so believable, so human, so sympathetic. I enjoyed every part of Dead Wrong; it was not predictable. And I liked especially that at the end all the red herrings were explained. I don’t like it when dubious clues are left hanging. To me, that’s sloppy writing. So thank you, Vanetta, for another great read!

Dead Wrong by Vannetta Chapman is the debut of Agatha’s Amish B&B series. I was quickly engrossed in this engaging Amish cozy mystery. Agatha Lapp has inherited her brother’s bed and breakfast in Hunt, Texas on the Guadalupe River. She relocates from Shipshewana, Indiana and quickly begins fixing up the rundown building. Ten months later, Agatha has a successful inn that Englisch and Amish like to visit. When Agatha finds guest, Russell Dixon dead outside his cabin, she rushes to her neighbor, Tony Vargas for assistance. Tony is a retired detective who lost his wife to cancer in the last year. He has been sitting in his home mourning while life continues to go on around him. Vannetta Chapman took the time to establish the characters. We get to know Agatha, Tony and Gina Philips (Agatha’s friend and employee). Gina provided some humorous moments that had me giggling. I like Agatha’s character. She is a caring woman with faith and fortitude. The mystery is complex with several suspects and a variety of clues. I like that this whodunit was difficult to solve (they are the best type). This is one mystery that will keep you guessing with a great reveal. I was just delighted with Dead Wrong. I thought Dead Wrong was well-written and it moved along at a steady clip. There are some great characters including Bishop Jonas Schrock. I am eager to read the next book in the Agatha’s Amish B&B series. Dead Wrong is a charming Amish cozy mystery with suspicious guests, helpful friends, gorgeous countryside, a determined investigator, and a caring community.

The best part of this Amish mystery - and it was so good I gobbled it up in 24 hours! - is two little words on the front cover: BOOK ONE! Widow Agatha and her neighbor, retired detective Tony, are a great pair. Different, but so "right" together, like sweet and salty beer nuts. I CAN.NOT.WAIT. for their next adventure! I have enjoyed every book and genre from the pen of the talented Vannetta Chapman, but her cozy mysteries just can't be beat. The police action is realistic, and every conversation at Agatha's Bed & Breakfast flows so naturally that you can smell the coffee and cinnamon rolls. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Dead Wrong. There's more than meets the eye in sleepy little Hunt, Texas. 5 stars isn't enough for this heart-warming start to Chapman's new Amish B&B series.

I found Dead Wrong to be an entertaining and unpredictable cozy mystery. It was an easy to read page turner that captured me from the prologue to the last page. There were plenty of suspects that kept me guessing until close to the books ending. I wasn't able to guess whodunit but enjoyed trying to solve the mystery.
Agatha Lapp makes a move from Indiana to Hunt Texas to reopen her late brothers Bed and Breakfast and make his dreams come true. The place needs a lot of tender loving care and attention which Agatha is able to do. Ten months later she has the Bed and Breakfast up and running and a full house of guests. But Agatha finds a dead man behind one of her cabins and the police soon learn he didn't die of natural causes. Lieutenant Barrister thinks Agatha is the murderer and she calls on her neighbor Tony Vargas, retired police detective, to help her solve this crime and prove her innocence. Is the real murderer a guest staying at the Bed and Breakfast? If so they must find out who it is and why they would have killed this man, before the week is up and her guests leave to go back to their homes. They have their work cut out for them and only a few days left to solve this mystery. Can they do this before the Lieutenant arrests Agatha for a crime she didn't do?
I recommend this book to readers of cozy mysteries and fans of Vannetta Chapman.
I purchased a copy of Dead Wrong from Amazon. A review wasn't requested. All opinions expressed here are my own. -
I enjoyed this cozy mystery so much! If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, Dead Wrong is a novel that I definitely recommend. The author had me guessing throughout the entire book about who was behind the death of Russell Dixon. This story was really a page turner for me!
I liked the way the author wrote this book to include both Amish and Englisch characters. This was definitely not a typical Amish style book, where all things were focused on the Amish culture. I feel that this story could be enjoyed even by those who are not fans of Amish fiction, as it is primarily focused on solving the mystery of the murder and the various friendships and interactions between characters. Their backgrounds and religious beliefs were important in understanding who the characters were and enhanced the story and made the characters feel like real people to me.

My first Vanetta Chapman book won't be my last!
I saw these on sale this past week and thought, why not? Went to read the first and really liked it. The characters were believable, the situations plausible, and yet there were just enough twists to keep me from figuring it all out. I had the who and why but I also missed the subplot stuff. That was great because it kept me doubting everything I'd come up with.
I loved the idea of an Amish B&B in Texas and as a vacation spot for the Amish. I think we get limiting ideas of who and what the Amish are, so seeing them doing familiar things in their way makes them and their lifestyle more approachable while still keeping them "separate."
The writing style was engaging, and it left me curious about so much. I'll definitely be getting the next two and reading them! -
Agatha Lapp takes over running her deceased brother’s bed and breakfast, but never dreamed it would become a murder scene. She and her neighbor, widower Tony Vargas, a retired police detective, team up to try to solve the crime, but put themselves in danger in the process. This cozy mystery offers an entertaining read with an Amish setting immersed in the surrounding world and guests of both types at the B&B. The realistic characters have their quirks and their secrets, peopling a compelling plot as the suspense increases. All the threads and surprises make for a satisfying read. All opinions are my own.

Dead Wrong by Vannetta Chapman
I love to read books written by Vannetta Chapman and I especially enjoy her Amish mysteries. This is a great book to read. She draws a picture of her characters with words and they are so clear that I can see them in my mind's eye! The mysteries develop slowly until everything comes together in the end. I like Agatha, Tony, and Gina. I can't wait to read the whole series to see what will happen to each of them. -
Agatha Lapp moves from Shipshewana, Indiana to Hunt, Texas, a small town nestled in the Texas Hill Country. The tragic death of her brother and sister-in-law leads her there to take over the Amish B&B that her brother envisioned.
When Agatha discovers one of her guests dead on the lawn she runs to a neighbor for help. Little did she know that her decision to run that direction was the best thing she could have done. The former police detective and Agatha soon find themselves in the hunt for a killer.
This is the first book in the Agatha’s Amish B&B series. It didn’t take long for me to become interested in the storyline and characters. A friendship develops between Agatha and Tony as the plot moves along. It’s nice to see that course of events rather than an immediate romantic storyline. I look forward to reading the next book and recommend Dead Wrong. -
This is a quick read I was able to start and finish in the same day! (Though I’ll add that a big part of that was because I had to find out whodunit and how!)
I’ve read a number of Vanetta Chapman’s books, and enjoyed them all. This is definitely one of my favorites of hers, and I’m so excited she’s started a new series! Agatha is a delightful character, and Tony Vargas is so endearing. Can’t wait to see more of him! And Gina is the best friend any girl would want.
An excellent first installment in this series, and a great intro to Chapman’s work if you’re not familiar with it. I was kept guessing until the end!
I received a copy of the book from the author. All opinions are my own. -
This had enough of a mystery to keep me engaged, and I enjoyed the characters as well as the Amish philosophy that permeated the story. I only had one moment of disbelief and that was when the elderly character named Agatha jumped from the back of a rolling van. It was daring, but there were no broken bones or serious bruising. I just couldn't buy that happening.
I needed a break from the truly dark books I've been reading lately, so this was perfect. -
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author writes a suspenseful mystery in a wholesome setting!
-
BRB, checking in to this Amish B&B to solve mysteries and live a simple life with Agatha.
Did I already want to become Amish in practice? Yes. Do I want to become Amish in practice even more after reading this? Absolutely, positutely.
What a calming, and cozy story! I wanted more quirky characters, and the mystery could have been a tiny more fleshed out, but overall I'm SO excited to continue on in this serise!!!

Dead Wrong is a quick read (I read it in one afternoon). I liked that Agatha opened a B & B in Texas that honored her brother's memory.
When Agatha finds a dead body, she runs to Tony, her next door neighbor, even though they have not had many interactions. As the story progresses, Tony and Agatha become good friends.
I love that the story focuses on the mystery and not a romance. I was surprised by what Agatha and Tony uncovered during their investigation of the murder. The story kept me guessing right up until everything was revealed.
I found the characters realistic and the storyline engaging. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries. Even though this is Christian fiction, it is not blatant. Agatha is Amish, so she prays to herself before meals. -
Dead Wrong is the first suspense novel written by Vannetta Chapman in her new Agatha's Amish B&B series. This story has some very interesting characters that lend great detail to this story. The storyline never hits a full moment so the reader will definitely keep turning the pages.
Agatha Lapp is a middle-aged widowed Amish lady who has uprooted her life in Shipshewanna to move to Texas to take on a new adventure of realizing her deceased brothers dream of operating a B&B. When she arrives she is shocked at the rundown appearance of the B&B but being the strong independent woman she is, she is determined to see it through. When she accidentally stumbles upon a dead guest she runs to her neighbors house and learns he is a retired detective from the police department. As events play out Agatha is the prime suspect but together with her neighbor, Tony, they set out to uncover the truth. This story is filled with suspense, drama, healing, and friendship. This is an amazing opening story for this new series. I am excited to read the next book to discover what the next mystery will be.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions expressed are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Vannetta Chapman on opening her new series with a truly sensational mystery for her readers to solve. -
For several years now, I’ve loved Vannetta Chapman’s mystery/suspense books in both the Amish and contemporary genres. This is first book in her new series combines the background of the Amish community with quite an intriguing murder mystery. This author writes dialogue that’s snappy and witty, and I always feel as if I’m actually listening in to the conversations as I’m reading. Her plots are never simple or easy to solve, and this story kept me guessing all the way through the book.
But in every one of Vannetta Chapman’s books, it’s the characters that we come to love. In this book, I love the character of Agatha. She’s smart, compassionate, and full of faith. She’s the perfect owner of an Amish B & B. Two of her best friends are Tony, a retired detective who is also her next door neighbor; and Gina, an English friend who helps her run the B & B. I liked the way that these characters each used their own talents in solving the mystery. It was nice reading an Amish story where both Amish and English respected each other and were willing to accept each other’s differences as they worked together.
If you love the clean and sweet “cozy mystery’ genre, you’ll love this one as it’s definitely the best one I’ve read this year. I’m already looking forward to the next book to see what happens next with Tony, Gina, and Agatha.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own. -
Firstly, a huge thank you to Vannetta Chapman for providing me with an ARC of Dead Wrong in return for an honest review.
This was without a doubt a 5 star read for me. I have read several of Vannetta's books in the past and I love how she gets my interest from the first sentence and draws me right into so that I feel like I know all the main players.
This book was wonderful in that it had me laughing at times and biting my nails at others. I liked the twists that prevented me from guessing the whole plot but only part of it. It was great to be in Texas rather than in the Amish communities of Pennsylvania, Indianiana, Ohio and Kentucky. A change of scenery was great. I wish the B&B were real because it sounds like somewhere I would really love to stay.
Agatha, Tony, Gina were all such wonderful characters and my joy in this being book one of the series means that I will get to visit the B&B and with them all again.
If you are a lover of Amish fiction and enjoy mysteries this is a must read for you. If you have never read Amish fiction this is a wonderful book to get you started and make you a huge fan of the genre.
Another great 5 Star, A++ book from Vannetta Chapman and I am anticipating reading the second one very soon.
Again, my thanks to Vannetta for the ARC of this book and I can completely attest that the review is my honest opinion of the book. -
Dead Wrong was appropriately titled for the latest cozy mystery by Vannetta Chapman. Wow, what a masterful and winsome mystery set in Hunt, Texas at Agatha’s Amish B&B. The characters are dimensional along with the plot and all the vivid penned words I felt like I was right there through all the enjoyable and unpleasant happenings. Agatha’s and Tony’s story kept me turning page after page till the end. There were times I thought I knew who the suspect was but Chapman’s secondary characters with their intertwined behavior and attitudes made it difficult to truly know till later. My heart broke at times for the accusations and all that Agatha had to endure but her faith, fortitude and spirit kept her going. I appreciated the way Tony came to life after coping with grief and isolating himself in his home when tragic struck at the B&B.
I’m highly recommending Dead Wrong to readers. This is one captivating story set in the new Amish community of Hunt, part of Texas Hill Country. Chapman delivered a poignant story with a cast of amiable characters that I look forward to reading more in this series, Agatha’s Amish B&B.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and was no obligation to post a review. I have shared my own sincere opinion. -
It's probably a cliche, but all I ever knew about Amish is they are peaceful and loving people. So coming across a book where an Amish woman helps solve a murder peaked my interest.
I really enjoyed Vannetta Chapman's "Dead Wrong" set in an Amish owned B&B in Texas. Agatha, a 50s something widow from Indiana, has come to take over her brother's B&B after he and his wife are killed. Agatha is sweet and caring and offers accommodations to both Amish and "English" which is what Amish call non-Amish.
This is book 1 in a series of 3. When Agatha finds a dead guest, she panics and runs next-door to her neighbor, who happens to be a retired detective. And it's a good thing he knows his way around the law because Agatha is arrested for the murder.
My only complaint is this is such a cliche plot. So many murder mystery series start out with the main character being arrested for the crime. I don't like it and other readers don't like it so it would be great if writers (being creative and all) could come up with a new plot line. Other that that, this a fun and fast read. -
To honour his dream, Agatha Lapp restored the B&B that her brother purchased before his untimely death. She now successfully runs the expanded business, a B&B that caters to both Amish and English (non-Amish) clients. On the day that Russell Dixon mysteriously dies, she has in a mixed crowd of clients and any one of them could be the culprit. Tony Vargas, her next-door neighbour, steps in to help her through the investigation when it appears that the police are getting it dead wrong.
This was a solid, well-told story packed with beautiful nuggets of knowledge about the Amish culture. Agatha and Tony were great characters; both written with heart. My favourite character, though, was Gina who bustles around in the background with her tart advice and spirited kindness.
Dead Wrong would make a great beach read or, as we head into fall, a wonderful story to read while tucked up under a warm blanket with a hot cider to hand. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.
Recommended. -
What an enjoyable read!!! I can always trust this author for nice, clean reads that entertain me and keep me guessing. Vannetta Chapman presents authentic Amish characters and their interaction with "Englishers" in her books.
A talented author with a variety of genres in which she writes, she is a favorite.
I read book two in the Agatha's Amish B&B series first. I know, "buggy before the horse." But that is just what happened. While both Dead Wrong (#1) and Dead Broke (#2) both had some of the same characters and are both set in the same bed and breakfast area, they are definitely stand-alone stories.
I highly recommend both of these books and I am looking forward to a thrid book in the series.
I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.
