Toby gets blamed for the damage. The owner is the father to his sister's best friend, a most annoying pest. His decision to become a doctor did not sit well with his father. Toby tussles with his fate as the war move towards them. Facing the aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg, plus the arrival of one of his bullies from childhood gives Toby the push he needed. Realizing that just growing up in the church did not mean that he was saved. Toby finally has faced himself; he finds the one true love for him and has made his decisions for the future. Join him in his pursuit of these answers.
What did I like? I have read the other three books that Madeline has written and knew that I was going to love this one as well. She has that special bond with her characters and knows how to bring them to life in her storylines. Her faith along with the way that she grew up adds a flavor to her books that most don’t have. Be prepared Madeline has thrown in some wonderful surprises all through the book.
What will you like? Humor, excitement, and down to earth characters will keep your nose glued to the pages and you will not be able to put it down. Her characters are so unique and loveable even the loath ones. I loved her descriptions and the details that she added to the storyline. I could hear the guns and felt the quiver of the ground as they exploded. I saw the battle raged men in the aftermath of the attacks. The storyline is distinctive and yet it is one that has been told before but not with the emphasis on faith. When I say this, I want you to understand that this is a beautiful story, with all the emotions and turbulence of growing up in the mid-1800s. Toby’s problems are age-old, Life was tough, and the war did not make it easier for anyone. She takes those problems and the horrors of the battlefields and added a little humor. She gives us the facts and shows how some managed to live through it with grace.

3rd book of Upward Way Chronicles serie, but you can easily read it as a stand alone book.
Tobias, as the title suggests, is the main character of the book.
set in Philadelphia, year 1856, Tobias is shy, sensitive, unlucky, and the son of a minister of the local church.
Thanks to the war, Tobias and all the characters learn
how a boy become man during the war,
how sentiments become love and missing,
how home and family become a place eager to return to,
how childish enemy can become friends,
how studies are important,
how God presence can help a suffering time.
very nice and interesting story, love it. -
Wonderfully Written
This book is such a beautiful continuation of the saga starting in book one Tatiana, and two Malchus . I want the Book 4. I want to know Naomi’s story. I loved the conversion. Of Toby. Many people still thinking that because they’ve raised in church, they are save automatically. Keep the good work, Madeline! -

Great story
This was such a good book. Written of an era when there was an air of innocence in young people even in college. O f a young man who although totally respected his father and always tried to do the right thing, did not understand salvation until he found it on the battlefield. About young people in love, living with war and loss. A very good read!
