I am a princess in the castle keep.
I am a pirate on the high seas.
I am a cowboy on the lone prairie.
I am a wild girl, alone in my stouthearted tree.
So begins the story of Wild Girl and Gran - a young girl and her grandmother who become companions in imagination, schemers in adventure and free-spirited in friendship. Together they create a whimsical world that is beautifully charmed and safe. But a shadow falls over this special place when Gran falls ill and leaves the world. Wild Girl does not feel safe or adventurous anymore. One spring day, Wild Girl's mother begins to tell stories about Gran. Wild Girl sees how, together, their love for Gran, and each other, will survive. Wild Girl and Gran is the hauntingly beautiful tale of how imagination renews the human spirit and how love passes across generations, from mother to daughter, to calm a wild girl's heart and make her adventurous again. Wild Girl and Gran (Northern Lights Books for Children) Reviews

A girl goes from isolation to an open heart with her playful Gran, whose death she must also meet and learn from.

I have no criticism of this lovely book (paintings are marvellous, too), but I was sorry to predict the gran's death as soon as she entered the stage. Are old people only for dying? Asking for a friend.

I think I can see what this book is trying to do but am not sure that it accomplished that. Or, I totally missed the point and the book failed in whatever it was trying to do. I suspect the former but admit to the possibility of the latter. But, I am sure that I do like to have to guess.

For me, the rating is between two and three, but I rounded up to three stars because overall I did enjoy the story and the idea of what I think it was trying to do. Also, the illustrations were good.

A girl has a special relationship with her grandmother centred around their wild imaginations. The grandmother gets sick and dies, and the girl must deal.
I would recommend this story to older elementary children, as there is some challenging vocabulary and poetic language.
The illustrations really capture the emotions of the story.
