Detective Inspector Michael Angel is soon on the trail of a serial murderer in the south Yorkshire town of Bromersley.
The only common factor linking the victims is their association with the late Lord Ogmore. But there are no clues, no fingerprints and no DNA.
ANGEL HAS ONLY ONE EYE-WITNESS . . . AND HE'S BLIND.
A glamorous schoolmistress with a past, two men with ponytails, a set of needle-sharp silver handled stilettos and a fluffy toy elephant all play their part in a scramble to find the killer.
DI ANGEL’S TOUGHEST CASE YET.
Perfect for fans of R.D. Wingfield, Colin Dexter, Peter Robinson, Reginald Hill, and Agatha Christie.
THE DETECTIVE
Michael Angel is over fifty, married to Mary. They don’t have any children. They are a devoted couple but the relationship sometimes breaks down due to his job or due to the problems of Mary’s sister who lives in Edinburgh and imposes on their easygoing natures. Michael works at the small local police station and is devoted to defeating crime, murder, and dishonesty of any sort and has no personal ambition beyond being a good husband and a successful detective. He doesn’t want promotion with all the routine office work and stress that goes with it. He is incorruptible but always short of money. He is always at odds with his immediate chief, Detective Superintendent Horace Harker, who is lazy, a hypochondriac and not a bit interested in assisting Angel in serious police work.
THE SETTING
Bromersley is a market town at the bottom of the Pennines surrounded by stone and hawthorn-edged fields grazed by cattle and sheep. It is cold as anywhere in the winter but its closeness to the mountains protects it from many gales and heavy falls of snow. The town’s industry today includes the manufacture of ball bearings and whisky bottles, and a huge brewery produces Bromersley’s best bitter, which is considered the finest beer for miles around. Wednesday is market day, and the town centre is host to the frequent cries of stall-holders hawking their wares while the enticing smells of cheeses, coffees, foreign spices and fish and chips tempt your taste buds as you wander through the stalls. The police always find it difficult to catch pilferers and pickpockets in such a crowd. Bromersley folk are easy to befriend but many of the old people are stubborn and still buy their fruit and veg in pounds and ounces, not kilos and grams.

The Auction Murders Reviews

Another good one from Mr. Silverwood
Detective Angel continues investigating crimes that don’t seem to add up. There is a series of murders, starting at an auction of the contents of a manor house whose owner has died, and his wife can’t afford to keep living there. The killer uses the same method every time but a different weapon but from the same set. We take up the tale with all the familiar characters from previous episodes, with Mrs. Buller-Price playing a rather important part.
Mr. Angel is an unreconstructed authoritarian and when he gives orders he expects everyone of lesser rank to jump — in the next 2 seconds or suffer his extreme displeasure. But his supervisor is incompetent and he’s willing to bend the rules when orders come down to him. He’s doing something right because the other characters recognize he’s unraveling cases they can’t. As usual a fast entertaining read. -
The Auction Murders is book 5 in the Yorkshire Murder Mysteries series by Roger Silverwood. Detective Inspector Michael Angel caught the case of a man stabbed to death in an Auction House. For Detective Inspector Michael Angel, this was not the last murder he had to investigate. However, there were no links to the victims except they both worked for Lord Ogmore. The readers of The Auction Murders will continue to follow Detective Inspector Michael Angel investigation into the murders.
The Auction Murders is another fantastic addition to the excellent Yorkshire Murder Mysteries series by Roger Silverwood. I engaged with The Auction Murders from the first page and continued until the end. I love Roger Silverwood portrayal of his characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. The Auction Murders is well written and researched by Roger Silverwood. I like Roger Silverwood description of the settings of The Auction Murders that allowed me to feel part of the plot of this book.
The readers of The Auction Murders will learn about living in the historic town of North Yorkshire. Also, the readers of The Auction Murders will understand the devastating for the victims when someone takes advantage of their grief.
I recommend this book. -
After young Lord Ogmore died, everyone came to know about the huge debts he had incurred during his lifetime. His castle along with all the furnitures, paintings and cutleries were up for an auction. His widow had to shift down to their servants' bungalow, with no servants of course. They did not have money.
All of their household was on auction. She was broken. The Ogmore diamond, a priceless piece, could solve her problems but it was already sold.
And their Butler is killed in the same auction.
Followed by their housekeeper and their doctor. Lady Ogmore's house is attacked when she is out. Someone is searching for something and can kill to get it.
DI Micheal Angel, man overburdened with too many cases, now has to solve serial murders too. To top that he has a broken leg, a fraud case involving ATMs, a crook who wants to buy him off, a dishonest colleague and a séance that his wife wants him to believe in.
Silverwood has done a great job, punching 3 stories in the lives of "detectives" into the daily life of a detective inspector, who gets shouted at for not completing his work on time. He has to be fast and has to make the charges stick. -
Roger Silver wood keeps up the fabulous DI Angel journey, with yet another great book.
God love Michael Angel, he has old fashioned, immoveable morals & keeps going until he gets the job done!
I love him a little bit more with each book! -
Angel does it again!
Another fun mystery as Angel tried to trap a killer, expose a so called psychic and find a huge diamond. Always fun, these light little mysteries are well written and not easily solved....at least by this reader. -
A proper mystery
Roger Silverwood has written another proper mystery for Angel. Actually the good Inspector solves three this time. A determined murdered takes life after life without hesitation in a search for who knows what. -
Tempest in a teapot
Somethings evident early on but the chase was the best. No clues! No DNA! No evidence! Angel and his crew found everybody responsible with a neat bow. -
This is a very good story in this series. Full of plenty of surprises and twists.
-
A good read
Pretty much on par with all of the previous Yorkshire Murder Mysteries. Some happenings are a bit far-fetched but still is an enjoyable read. -
Really enjoyed this book, the more I read about Angel the more I like him!
