Everyone remembers the friendly beasts of the stable at Christmas, but what of the creatures of field and forest? From her perch in the rafters, a small bird's heart fills with love. Out over the countryside she flies, carrying the glad tidings. Bunny and fox, mole and mouse, hummingbird and tortoise, spider and ladybug all hurry to the stable to welcome the new baby. And what a noisy greeting they give! In lilting, lyric verse and magical watercolor paintings, Laura Krauss Melmed and Jane Dyer give us a Christmas treasure sure to be a family favorite year after year after year.

Hurry! Hurry! Have You Heard? Reviews

Kittens with mittens and rabbits with hats and a mouse in a lovely little green dress all trek through the snow to see the newborn baby who is never named but is clearly the Christ child. I have always loved Jane Dyer's art and here she has great charm - a spider in a top hat, a tortoise in a stocking cap, and the (very white) baby with absolutely adorable expressions. I suppose it's one approach to the Christmas story, make it snowy and very Anglo-Saxon, but I prefer a more traditional Bethlehem setting myself.

  • Amy Brown

A fun story about all the animals that are racing to see the new born baby. Great one to use for Sunday School. Too bad I got it too late to use this year. Will have to remember it for next year.

  • Natasha

I very rarely give such a low rating, but there was very little I liked about this book. The illustrations were nice, but it was not historically or culturally accurate (and why were the animals wearing clothes?). Perhaps the story is meant to be read to and interesting for very young children, because the emphasis was definitely on the animals and not on Jesus' being born. I will not be keeping this in our collection of Christmas picture books.

  • Kathleen

It's a special day, as the animals all scurry and scamper to meet the king. No, not Simba in the Circle of Life, but the baby Jesus snug in a manager.

  • Jo Oehrlein

A bird, mole, mouse, shrew, bee, fox, dog, and others come to the manager to see the baby Jesus.

    Told in rhyme.

  • Rosita

This a good to read to preschooler and receive a new sibling in their home. All the forest was notify by a small boy that the newborn baby boy has arrived to go to see him. Everyone was so excited to meet the newborn baby boy.

Learning Experience: The teacher will give the children different box to become their personal box to put things that describe their personality.

  • Dina

A sweet book, but I was a little disappointed. The end seems a little abrupt after the drawn-out gathering of the animals to visit the new babe, but Jane Dyer's watercolors are charming as usual--especially as each animal is added to the parade.

  • Rachel

Holiday story with beautiful illustrations. Text lacks rhythm

  • Tina B

    "Christmas, animals, nativity"

  • Teri

Pretty fluffy about animals coming to visit the baby Jesus.

  • Lisa

A great story to read around Christmas time.

  • Tanya

All the animals hurry to see the new baby Jesus - sweet illustrations.

  • Kathryn

How sweet this book is. All of these adorable animals coming to see the new baby, they have hats and scarves and the cutest faces. Jane Dyer is such a wonderful illustrator.

  • Charity

My four year old daughter liked all the animals in this one.

  • Jessica

Very cute Christmas book. Levi loved all the drawings of baby animals.

  • Danette

Although it never mentions who this special baby is, this is a cute book. My 3 yr old loved all the little animals and said "ahhh" when she saw the cute baby.

    Read with Julia.
