The Frugal Life: How a Family Can Live Under $30,000 and Thrive Reviews

This book reads like a blog post written by someone who has been frugal for about 2 months. It goes over basic ideas to save money - buy cheaper coffee, grow your vegetables, and make sure you're starting off with a pantry full of every staple known to man. Have your house completely flipped, repainted and furnished before starting to be frugal, and make sure your wardrobe is ready. Now, try not to buy anything you can't afford. Yay, good job!

An informative, cute little book. Interesting and enjoyable but there were no tips or advice that stood out or hadn’t been said before.

This book is fine if you just want to find out how the author lives her life, but don't read it hoping for useful tips on much of anything.

It's sprinkled with confusing, poorly written sentences. She starts talking about family members by name without telling us who these people are first. And she suggests using a certain free streaming site that appears to be pirated movies. But hey, I guess it does save money if that's your only concern.

    Nothing new or helpful

She says she is lazy about numbers and isn't into finance ... that explains a lot.
She lists several other books she is reading but those authors are nothing to write home about.
$10 per person when cooking at home is ridiculous, those are restaurant prices! OK low quality chains but still. I have never had a problem serving a healthy gourmet meal for less than a dollar and regularly .25 cents
The book reads like bragging rights about how lazy and uneducated she is but we should all be so lucky to be kept in such style while hubby slaves away for a wage.

As an avid reader it’s so odd to read a book written by someone you have so much in common with. Many elements this lady talks about are things I have focused on as well. Not often do we sit down with a friend and both find a deep love of coffee and focusing on family and friends instead of consumption of material things which is pushed on us from every angle. Focusing on us, the real us and the time we have.
So that aside if you are new to one parent being home or facing that situation and asking yourself “how will we survive?” this is an excellent book for you. If you’ve been at it a while you might fewer helpful tips. I disagree with the author and think single parents can use some of this information too as I was once in that position.

Useful lifestyle advice for the aspiring frugal person

This was a great summary of a lot of what you can do to live frugally. I am not a homemaking parent who homeschool their kids; I am in a place where I am working three jobs, am in no debt, and live with my partner I graduated from college with. This book can be applied to anyones life who aspires to be frugal, wherever they live, and can be customized to accommodate any situation. I only wish the author mentioned this or mentioned it more in this book as not everyone can or want be in a situation like hers. I wish she would acknowledge the part of her audience that is not a stay at home patentable who is interested in practicing frugality in their lifestyle.

    Kate is Amazing!

I read this book in one day. I felt like I was sitting with Kate at her kitchen table ,drinking her fabulous coffee with her.
I just live how she lays it all out. So much information! I love her lists, of her pantry, her cleaning routine.
I love how she refurs to The Tightwad Gazette! I have every one of the newsletters from Author. I even have my letter published in the Tightwad Gazette! So I know all of Kate's advice is worth it's weight in gold!
I recommend this book to any new or old housewife, who wants to have her house a Home!
Way to go Kate! Can't wait for your next book!

    Inspiring and Motivational

Katie does a wonderful job of giving a quick read but it is packed with suggestions and resources (I.e. YouTube links, book recommendations, and websites). This is not as in depth as say, Marie Kondo, but it is a great tool to get you motivated and off your tail.

    Abundant frugality

Practical and useful ideas to live frugally and joyfully. Kate Singh shares how abundance and beauty can and should be part of saving money and living on a small income.

    Rehashed but charming

Mostly references to other books but the author's sincerity is engaging. The desire to see you succeed seems to be only outpaced by your own. Wish more practical advice was given.

This book had no idea what it wanted to be. Was it a cook book? A cleaning guide? A health book? A mummy blog? Not to mention the few tips it had that were actually about living frugally were the most basic tips that anyone picking up this book would already be following them.

  • Sandy Allred

Okay this is fabulous! Straight and to the point with no fluff. Just what I like. We already do 90% of this so I wish I had read it years ago, but still good reminders and a few new things to implement!

  • Nancy Bryant

3.5 stars. Lots of good ideas for saving money. The author chose to stay home with her children and she explains how they managed to budget and live a good life on one income.

  • CYIReadBooks (Claire)

Nothing new that we all haven't learned already.

  • Gwen Bevers

    Great ideas

Really good ideas to save money. I’m still not convinced we could live on one income however ;) maybe when the kids are out of the house. :D

  • Kelly Van Howe

Love all of the frugal tips and ideas. Kate's books are always delightful!

  • Sophie Gist

    A very sweet book

I love Kate's YouTube channel and this book was so relateable and helpful. Reminds me of the Tightwad Gazette in the slow friendly conversational style.

  • Jennifer Bennett

    Informative

I learned that there are many ways to save and now I'm working on paying off bills. I can't wait to use some of these ideas. A great read!

    Not healthy

This woman has no idea of a healthy diet. She actually eats white flour and sugar. I just couldn't take this book seriously
