Her Works Praise Her: A History Of Jewish Women In America From Colonial Times To The Present Reviews
-
_Her Works Praise Her_ provides a great history of Jewish Women in America, starting from the very first women who set foot on soil. Diner believes it was the presence of women, and not men, who arrived earlier than the women, that changed the atmosphere of America for Jews and other immigrants. She follows the religious and economic shifts they experience, from factory workers to white collars to degrees. They go from strict observance to Reform and then shift back to the middle with Conservative Judaism. She also spends a good amount of time talking about the feminist movement and how it affected the Jewish home, for better or worse. Filled with great information and a little bit of who's who, I enjoyed the information and writing style, dense as it is.

I learned a lot of history. Good stuff about Portland, OR. Read with Forest Glen neighborhood book group, Nora Howley's choice.
