Angels Reviews

I will state from the beginning that I am the author of just one drabble in this book (Storm, on page 294), and seeing as it makes up such a small percentage of the total story count here, it in no way affects my review or rating.

This is the second book in a dark drabble series by ambitious Australian publishers Black Hare Press, who are carving out a reputation for not only supporting new and established writers but also publishing a very impressive number of dark anthologies in the year 2019 and proposed into 2020.

The themes here as outlined on the back cover are beatific angels, holy wars, kitty saviours, epic battles between good and evil, devils and demons, and fallen angels. Some writers have really gone to town with their knowledge of the genre, including names of demons and angels which even surpasses mine significantly, despite my 13 years at Catholic primary and secondary schools with compulsory bible reading and mass.

And honestly, it’s not a genre I would usually write in, nor choose to read for these very reasons. However, I was pleased to see that there were still so many great pieces in here for someone like me. The stories which stood out for me (in bringing something a little different without relying too heavily on the bible for inspiration) were:

    • Fresh Meat by Gregg Cunningham
    • I Pray with My Fists by Morgan Chalfant
    • Lack of Faith by G. Allen Wilbanks
    • Duty by Joel R. Hunt
    • The Sacrifice by Eddie D. Moore
    • In the Deepest Pit by Joel R. Hunt
    • A Troubled Seraph by Beth W. Patterson
    • The Experiment by Alanah Andrews
    • Lucky by Andreas Hort
    • First Revenge by Shawn M. Klimek
    • Gospel Truth by Joel R. Hunt

I am extremely excited for the coming anthologies and I know I will definitely see some more great stories which push the limits of the 100-word story.

*Disclaimer: I have a drabble in this anthology*
For 100-words, some authors managed to really surprise me. Though reading over 300 stories with the same theme and given the low word count, there were a lot of Micheals and Gabriels. That said, there were a tonne of great stories.
A few stand outs for me were 'Apocalypse Denied' Jonathan Inbody and 'Girdle' by Umair Mirxa and I absolutely loved 'Prisoner in Stone' by George Nikolopoulos. That should win a prize or something. Short and sweet, an entertaining read.

This is a collection of drabbles. What's a drabble? It's an exactly 100-word story. Each of these tiny tales is about an angel. Lots of variety here.
