This doesn’t need to be a book, but a series of blog posts. I was hoping for more critical analysis and self reflection from the author about policing and the future of the profession. This read like a high school essay. I understand what he is trying to accomplish—speaking frankly and simply to a group of aspiring 18 year old police officers. But the reality is this was infantilizing of those interested in the service. When I was exploring the literature around combat prior to joining the Army, I wasn’t really helped by the simple and obvious. I was most inspired by those authors who dug deep into their own psyche and prepared me at an emotional level, not just a logical level, for the journey I was about to take.
The author is well intentioned and clearly a fantastic cop. I simply was hoping for a bit more “peeling of the onion”. -
This book may be useful for someone starting out in law enforcement or looking to join. But otherwise it is a collection or rambling stories, anecdotes and advice that seems like they have been hastily thrown together. I genuinely think the author has good intentions but there are much better books from the work of business, leadership and biographies that will delve into more detail with more relevant information than this book contains.
