Although the death has worrying similarities to an event in his own past, Harry’s fortunes are given a sudden boost when he is made a rather strange offer, which is hard to turn down. It provides him with the opportunity of a to spend serious money on several high quality racehorses at the yearling sales. This investment in bloodstock comes with only one objective - to win the Gimcrack, a top class race for juvenile colts, run at York’s Ebor meeting. Harry soon realises the stakes are much higher than he imagined. He can’t afford to fail. He must train the winner of the Gimcrack; the lives of his friends and family may depend on it... This is the second racing thriller from Richard Laws. His first, The Syndicate Manager, was published in 2018.

Gimcrack: A British horse racing thriller Reviews

Brilliant story, I'm getting to love this author. Well rounded characters, violence well handled and not being explicit made it menacing. Racing and computer details well handled and to the right level.

This book started slowly for me but by the middle I had to keep reading. I appreciate that Mr. Laws knows the horse world and writes accurately about it without 'talking down' to those unfamiliar. There were a great many unexpected twists and turns, almost too many, but in the end it was an entertaining story and a fascinating concept.

    Twisty page Turner!

A genuine page Turner that kept me guessing until the end. A likeable hero, a family element, racing, horses, and organised crime all wrapped up in a cracking story, can't wait for the next book.

  • Samantha Martin

Really good story - full of surprising developments and likeable characters. Occasional errors but well worth a read if you are looking for a gripping horse racing mystery!
