The study of ancient Greek religion has been excitingly renewed in the last thirty years. Key areas of interest have the relationship between religion and politics; new and unexpected perspectives opened up by archaeological finds; the symbiosis between myth and ritual; the role of gender differences in the practice and perception of religion; conceptual problems raised by the very notion of "religion." This volume gathers together challenging papers by many of the most innovative participants in this renewal. Almost all the articles have been revised by their authors and/or provided with Addenda, to take account of the most recent scholarship. One article has been translated specifically for this collection; another is for the first time provided with illustrations. No single school or style of approach is the aim is to illustrate a range of possible methods which may be adopted in the investigation of this endlessly fascinating material. The volume also
contains an important introductory essay by Richard Buxton.

Oxford Readings in Greek Religion (Oxford Readings in Classical Studies) Reviews

Includes some very informative essays on Greek "polis religion" by Sourvinou-Inwood as well as some helpful sections on ritual and procession at Greek festivals such as the famous Panathenaia at Athens. Definitely one of my favorite secondary sources from this semester: I ended up using it for my essay on divine justice in the Odyssey and for another essay on the function of ritual in Athens after the Persians sacked the city and Pericles came to power in the mid-400s BC.

An excellent sampling of classic articles on ancient Greek religion. Many of the articles, particularly those on polis religion by Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood, are excellent. All are reprinted from various sources, and so are unevenly edited. While some are directly helpful for the student of Greek religion in general, a few of the articles are really for specialists of one aspect of Greek religion. Even so, well worth the read for students of Greek religion or scholars of other disciplines who need insight into the critical questions.
