Frank Auerbach Reviews
-
Miraculously, Hughes's prose is as physical as Auerbach's painting, taking us into the studio of this famously camera-shy and reclusive artist, and getting us about as close to the action as seems humanly possible; there are times when you feel that the floating part of yourself that reads has been placed between charcoal and paper or brush and canvas as Auerbach struggles to produce the next image. And what images! The reproductions here are among the best I've ever seen, so it's a double-miracle that Hughes can hold his own against such technological swagger.
