This book is divided into the sections . The first is an overview of the Vikings and includes the stories of Eric the Red and Leif Ericsson. The second section focuses on Eric the Red and the tired on Leif Ericsson.
For those who know little of the Vikings, the first book is quite informative although fairly brief. It has citations for those who want to follow up. It discusses the history of the Viking Age, including a timeline. It outlines their technologies, laws, society, beliefs and mythologies. It also discusses their voyages, explorations and discoveries, and their colonising efforts. Lastly, it theorises on the effects the Vikings had on the history of the world.
Unfortunately, the last two books are largely a rewrite of the first book with little new information. In fact some parts are word for word the same. Very disappointing.
Not a captivating read as advertised but the first book is worthwhile as a starter. -

This book is one of several in a series that provides an overview of several historical peoples and life in their age. The publication discusses the ascendancy of the Vikings during the 790 through 1066 A.D. time period. Readers learn that the Vikings did not have a central government but a culture that easily adapted to and assimilated the cultures with which they came in contact. Vikings were more than warriors and conquerors, they were farmers, traders, and craftsman. Some of them plundered established settlements but others used their dragon ships to extend their reach into Europe, Russia and the coast of North America.
The authors give profiles of a few of the most famous Vikings like Eric the Red, King Olaf, Ragnar Lothbrok, and Bjorn Ironside. The Age of Exploration is discussed in some detail including the reasons for success and decline. They discuss the order of society consisting of many chieftains, the jarls and the few who rose to the rank of king. No discussion would be complete without mentioning Norse mythology. Asgard, the gods and goddesses, dwarves, giants, and demi-gods played an important role in the culture.
The publishers give a list of references at the end of the book. Young readers will find easy access to them in most libraries or online. Certainly, not an advanced treatise on the subject but highly recommended for ages ten and older as an introduction to the subject. -

In and of itself History of the Vikings isn’t terrible. It’s decently written and has enough information to keep most history buffs at least marginally interested.
The problem, though, is that it’s by no means exhaustive, and it’s incredibly repetitive.
I know this is technically a collection of 3 separate books, all loosely related to each other in subject matter, but i counted at 3 three different moments where the same information was presented, almost word for word, or with very little change. 3 different times we read about Viking houses. 3 different times we are given info on the Viking sagas. 3 times we have to read the same story of Erik the Red. By themselves, it’s fine, but combining them together, the editor of Captivating History should have found work arounds or at least a way to not present the same information so many times.
And yes, History of the Vikings is actually quite simple in that it barely scrapes the surface of Viking history and lore. Again, this is fine for a very quick read, but there are folks out there who want deep, juicy details and personally, this one just didn’t do that for me...not a dig on Captivating History or the authors, especially since it’s well stated this series isn’t supposed to be dense...I’m just giving a heads up for those of us who need more. -
