Derrick

I'd been fighting all my life.

Making it my career choice seemed...logical.

Sticking to what I was good at seemed...illogical as often as I ended up in the ER.

Then my occupational hazard began to feel like more of a perk when I met, Katy. She was a night nurse at the ER I frequented. She could barely hide her contempt for me, which naturally made the curvy brunette with long wavy hair all the more irresistible.

Katy

They called him Dagger, for the looks he gave.

He knew I hated him on sight, but still, he teased me and tried to sway me.

There's no way it would work. I was on the run and still healing from a relationship with a 'roid-raging powerlifter. No way was I going to give it a go with someone trained to cause pain for a living.

Then my ex tracked me down. And suddenly, having a fighter in my corner didn't seem like such a bad idea.

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

This book was a mixed bag for me. On one hand, there were things that I genuinely liked about the book, and on the other hand, there were things that just didn't mesh with me.

I'll start off with the writing because the book was very easy to read. The prose was written very smoothly, which I really enjoyed. The part of the author's writing style that I didn't care for was how the author would tell the reader instead of show them or add the information into the story in other ways. When I read pages of backstory, it really puts me off. Other than that tidbit, the writing was very enjoyable.

I really liked the characters. I felt that the author developed very genuine characters. They had very good advancement in the story as far as the character development is concerned, especially for Katy. The characters' wants and needs are clearly defined and the reader can easily connect with them. The characters were also very relatable.

The romance was a little yay and a little nay for me. First of all, the main characters had really excellent chemistry and connection with each other. I never for a moment felt like they shouldn't be together. The part about the romance that was a little sour for me was that the main characters got together way too quickly. There was no build-up to their relationship. They know each other for a day before they jump in headfirst. It was way too instalove for me, though it was more instalust than instalove. They do spend some time together as the story goes on but at this point, their relationship is already established.

The plot of the story was another thing that had a little bit from each column for me. I genuinely enjoyed the premise of the story. I really liked that the author wasn't afraid to shy away from sensitive topics in the story. Domestic violence is at the heart of this story and I really feel like the author genuinely portrayed what some people have experienced as a result of it. This wasn't an easy read, especially for anyone that had experience with domestic violence, but it is a powerful read. What I didn't like about the plotting of the story was the timeline. Everything happened way too quickly in this book. I strongly think that if this had been a full-size novel and there had been more added to it that it would have been great. As it is, it is just way too short and lacking in some areas. When things happen so quickly in the story it makes things feel unbelievable.

Overall, this was an intense story with many good qualities but in the end, it just wasn't for me. There were parts of the story that I really liked but there were just as many things that I didn't mesh with. If you are someone that enjoys novellas or fast-paced stories then this may be the perfect read for you.

This is the 1st in a n new series and what an amazing beginning this story is. Dagger is an MMA fighter who is a regular visitor at the ER, and when he meets the new nurse Katy, he is thrown that she does not like him. No spoilers: this is a definite must read, you will not be disappointed. This is a well written tale which is action packed, with an abusive ex, and with drama, intrigue, danger, suspense, complex characters, which all lead to a thrilling and steamy addictive page turner. I highly recommend this talented authors’ work for all.

Got to love me some Dagger! I loved the story as it was heart felt and one that tugged on one's heart strings. The story had really great characters Dagger aka Derrick was a MMA fight that was rough and tough on the outside but, we found him to be a big softie at heart on the inside. We loved no matter how bruised and battered and in pain he was he always retained his sense of humor and that sexy smile of his was panty melting and he left a many broken hearts in his wake.

Katy was one of those character you first meet and she seems a bit standoffish and unapproachable but, once you get to know the real her below the protective armor she is a sweet and kind and a loving soul who has been battered and bruised and abused by her ex and she is just trying to survive day by day.

We loved the chemistry this couple had and the easy friendship that turned into so much more. The story had a bit of intrigue and suspense and personal struggles for both characters who were both surviving in the only way they new how.

Overall this was a real good story with love-able characters that found love in the mist of the chaos that their lives were currently at at this particular moment in time and we loved how Katy woes although, were not the same as Daggers he could in some way relate to the things she was currently going through as he had a crazy ex himself and we loved how they easily bonded over crazy ex's and after everything Katy has be through Daggers size and job alone should make her run for the hills but, it did the exact opposite it made her feel safe, cherished and protected. I think this new series got off to a real great with Katy and Daggers story and we are looking forward to the next book in the series to come.

PS - Everyone should have a Dagger in their corner....

I loved this story. Dagger is my kind of hero...tough on the outside but soft on the inside. Katy is a fighter and I love that in a heroine. Great story that I sure did hate to see end....looking forward to the next one

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! DAGGER by S.L. Sterling was OUTSTANDING and Tugs at your Heart Strings at the Same Time!!
Derrick aka Dagger has always had to fight for his life literally since he was a child and later to decide to do it for a living as a MMA fighter. Then of course after a fight, goes to the ER which turns out he is a Regular there after taking some physical hits. Derrick is taken from the waiting room after some time to get his vitals done then waiting some more for an examination room.
Finally one the regular nurses Mollie takes him to a room and let's him know the doctor will be in to see Him soon but also mentioning a new nurse will be assisting. Derrick is taken by surprise after the so-called new nurse enters with the Bluest Eyes he has ever seen.
Katy walks in to find a Big Muscle guy with a bloody towel on the side of the head and swollen eye. As she examines him and notices that he has pain in his lower back, barks at him for not telling them since it was not noted on his chart. After Katy is finishing up his examination, walks in the doctor who is familiar with Dagger's injuries. Katy is looking over his chart again while ignoring their banter when they are calling her out.
Dagger trys to put the charm on Katy but doesn't fall for it and calls him out. Katy knows the type since she is on the run from her Ex and vows not to go there again.
Days later after ER visit, Dagger runs into Katy but Not in good terms. Katy feels threaten that her Ex is out to get her and confines in Derrick when she feels comfortable with what he did for her.

Derrick and Katy's storytelling is suspenseful and Heartwreching at the same time. And there is chemistry between the two characters that are Off the Charts Hot! I Could Not Put It in Down and devour it in ONE Sitting since it Captivated me from the Very Beginning!
DEFINITELY A MUST READ BOOK!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    ONE ROUGH AND RUGGED TREAT!!!
Whoops, there it is! Sterling threw caution to the wind, rocking this jewel right on home with this refreshing spin, mixing it up and laying it down, fusing this gem together sleek, shiny and tight. One action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, page flipping bombshell hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. A surging vortex of fervent events and distressing circumstances, blow this bad boy wide open. Producing incredible, well rounded scenario's that punch dead center with such exuberance and style, with such intensity and precision, blazing this gem to life spectacularly. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, kicking this bad boy into a raging tempest, blasting it into a tailspin with a mind-blowing culmination. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, doubt, turmoil, danger, mounting suspense and precarious situations along with a boatload of trouble while dodging calamity, you have one block busting masterpiece. The characters are complex and authentic with depth and traits that blend and flow, transforming into genuinely relatable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and depictions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Remarkable job Sterling, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.

This was my first book by this author and I am kicking myself for not finding her sooner! I devoured this book in one sitting and I'm a little sad we have to wait until 2021 to meet more of the MMA characters!

Katy is on the run from her ex, trying to keep a low profile. The last thing she needs or wants is to attract the attention of a local MMA fighter that goes by the name Dagger. When he see's her, he is instantly taken with her but she wont give him the time of day. He figures it's because she's too good for him and tries to forget about her. When they both end up at the same extended stay she confides in him about her past and he knows that he can't walk away from her. He has to protect her no matter the cost.

This story was so freaking good! It tackles the tough subject of domestic violence and the lasting impact of it but it was so well written. The plot was set at the perfect pace, lots of suspense and the chemistry is off the charts.

    I definitely recommend this story!

Love, Love, Love Dagger! I wanted to wrap myself up in this book and not let go. Dagger by S.L. Sterling is perfect. This book has all the feels wrapped up in a strong hug. One of those hugs that hold on to you and you know you are safe.

Yes, Dagger is an MMA fighter but this book is so much more than his fights. This is about survival. It is about the future, hope, and love. S.L. Sterling builds these characters and you feel their struggles. Each has its own demons and issues they are working through but these two are fighters in all sense of the word.

This is a book you will keep and pull out in those book funks and you just need to feel that comfort and warmth. I know I keep saying it and it may sound crazy but from personal experience, the entire book, descriptions, feel of this book is spot on. If you need a little hope and warmth please pick this book up.

Dagger meets Katy one night after a fight when he needed to get stitches. The nurse caught Dagger's eye but she didn't seem to keen on him, so he went on his way after he got patched up. Through a series of events, Dagger ends up moving into an extended stay place and the very next day he ends up with a neighbour.. Katy. After getting Katy's story out of her, now Dagger is bound and determined to make sure that she stays safe, and if he loses sleep then he will. For Katy she hasn't felt safe in a very long time and now with Dagger she finally feels that way. Will Dagger be able to keep her safe?

So, I must be the odd person out. This was a good story, but it could have been way better. I felt there was a lot missing from the story, the meat without the potatoes kind of thing. There was drama, danger, some ok spicy moments; but something was just missing for me. I give this 3.5 stars.

  • Sissy's Romance Book Review

Dagger by S.L. Sterling is the First book in the Vegas MMA Series. This is the story of Katy and Derrick 'Dagger'. Derrick has had to fight his whole life but turned that into a living which leads him to the ER a lot. So when he is taken to the ER for one of his routine visits he sees the regular workers there but then he meets a new worker...Katy. Of course she takes his breath away but she isn't giving into his flirting. Katy has her own issue by staying away and safe from her ex. So when she meets Derrick she knows how things would go and she just doesn't have it in her to take a chance. But then he starts to show her who he really is and of course he is there for her when she needs the help. Really enjoyed their story and can't wait for more stories from this author!

I really enjoyed Dagger by S.L Sterling it would be one of the many books that I've read by the author and it was one of those stories that keep you hocked from the first to last page . This is also a start of a new series and I can't wait to read what's to come for future characters in the Vegas MMA series . Right from the start you could feel the chemistry with the couple even though the heroine really wanted to fight the attraction but in the end he won her heart along with mine . This was such a page turner I didn't want it to end but was so happy with how it ended . I can't wait to read more by the author and of course the series .

After reading this book I had to take a little time to compose myself and get my thoughts clear in my head before I put them in a review.
Wow this book was amazingly written. Once I started I couldn’t put it down till I was finished. This book has twists and turns you don’t know what’s happening. will they all get there happily ever after or will it all go wrong. To find out what happens go buy the book. You won’t be disappointed I wasn’t.

Sterling delivers a fast-paced, quick read with Dagger. I was immediately intrigued by Dagger and Katy and I was eager to learn more about them. I enjoyed the initial push and pull dynamic between them. As the story progresses so does their relationship which I loved to see. Sterling also included an element of suspense and danger throughout. I was so caught up in that aspect. The excitement and unease it created had me tearing through the book.

Very sexy romance and hot characters I felt for the heroin in this story and did tear up. This story does touch your heart on what some of us women have to or have actually dealt with.

Derrick is back in the hospital again after his MMA fight to get his wounds fixed. This trip was not like every other thanks to the new night nurse, Katy. Derrick was determined to show Katy that he is not just some dumb fighter. She tried to ignore Derrick when he came in on her shift at the ER since she thought he was no different than her ex-boyfriend who she was running from. Her ex-boyfriend tracks her down and suddenly having Derrick around is a great thing.

Dagger is the first novel in the new Vegas MMA series by S.L. Sterling which is told in the dual first-person point of view. This was my first novel by S.L. Sterling and I enjoyed the way she was able to create the suspenseful feeling while reading the book. I could actually sense the fear in Katy she was experiencing while being on the run thinking her ex had found her. Once the trust was gained between Dagger and Katy your heartstrings are tugged at hard.

Derrick “Dagger” Delgado is a MMA fighter who is trying to catch a break and make it to the big fights in Vegas. But until then he frequents the local hospital where all of the nurses and doctors know him well. One night he meets a new nurse, Katy, who isn’t easily swayed by Dagger and wants to stay as far away from him as possible despite all of the nurses raving about how kind he is.
Katy was on the run from her ex, Jonas, a roid-filled bodybuilder and had no desire to get involved with a MMA fighter. She had already escaped one abusive relationship and didn’t want to be near anyone who may hurt her again.
Yet when Katy thinks that Jonas has found her she may need someone like Dagger in her corner.
This was a great quick read that I really enjoyed.
I thought Dagger was a great character and I liked how well he treated the nurses and how much he joked around with them. I was definitely worried about what he was putting his body through but I understood why he did it.
I gave Katy so much credit for escaping Jonas and how much effort she had to put into it. I was shocked though when Dagger revealed how much information Jonas could find by having her gmail account. Now I need to look into that myself! I knew why she was weary about getting involved with anyone, no matter how nice she was told they were after everything Jonas had put her through.
There was chemistry between Katy and Dagger right away but it wasn’t until certain events happened that Katy began to trust him and let him know everything she was facing. I loved how much Dagger helped her with everything and did what he could to keep her safe.
As soon as a certain event happened I knew what was coming and I wasn’t wrong. It broke my heart on how guilty Dagger felt but I knew he would get to Katy!
The end was awesome and I can’t wait to see more of these two hopefully in the rest of the series as we head to Vegas!

They both have been fighting most of their lives, but each for different reasons.

Derrick survived an abusive father and the bullies on the street to become Dagger, a poor but up-and-coming MMA contender.

Katy survived an abusive relationship—just barely—and is living life looking over her shoulder and in the shadows.

The two meet during one of Derrick’s frequent visits to the ER where Katy works to get patched up after a fight. There is an attraction but closed-off Katy and cynical Derrick don’t connect.

However, they each suffer setbacks which cause their paths to cross again, and Derrick goes into protective mode and Katy needs the protection… and a friend.

Told in the alternating points of view of Katy and Dagger (Derrick), this read is a good slow build romance. The problem for me was there was too much telling and not enough showing.

We spend a lot of time in the internal thoughts of Katy and Derrick, remembering past times and events, but most are only memories/descriptions with little dialogue between characters. It’s obvious these two have lived hellish lives, but the intensity is lost in the telling of their pasts. The suspense was watered down, leaving me feeling bad for their experiences, but no anger or empathy until near the end.

These two are likable characters and I couldn’t help but be in their corner as they grew closer together. Overcoming trauma and abuse is difficult, and while I believe these two characters appreciated the changes in their lives, to me, it simply didn’t feel like a life-changing victory because of all the telling.

A solid, feel-good ending ensures Katy and Derrick have a future together… and they do deserve it.

    Enjoy!

This is the first book in SL Sterling's Vega MMA Series. I really liked this book. It pulled you in from the first chapter and kept you reading to the last page. This is the story of Dagger who is a MMA fighter who visits the ER quiet often and there he meets Katy the nurse in the ER. And when she doesn't just fall at his feet like all of the rest of the women in his life then Dagger doesn't quiet get it. This is their journey together and I thought it was a great read and I loved these two character's both apart and together though I was rooting from the from the very beginning. This is a great start to this series and I can't wait to see what we get with the next book.

I really enjoyed this great start to this series. Although this book had heavy subjects involved, it was somewhat of a light read for me, well up until it wasn't and a lot of dark entered, towards the end of this book.

Now this story isn't one that is unique, maybe I have read similar before but it was well written, flowed so well and the characters were relatable and believable. Dagger or Derek was a great strong character that took no prisoners, would you expect different from.an MMA fighter. But he was so so gentle with Katy. Where she was was terrified her made her calm and protected and not so afraid when he was around. Katy however much she was broken, she was just as strong and honestly just what Dagger need to make his lonely life whole.

I do recommend this book and look forward to the rest of the series, when they come. All in all a good quick read

When up and coming MMA fighter Derrick aka Dagger drags himself into the ER after a match, he meets the new ER nurse Katy. While caring for his wounds, he realizes that she’s got something against him, and he doesn’t really know why. Is it because of what he does for a living?
Katy’s on the run from her ‘roid raging ex and the last thing she needs to do is get involved with or be around another gym rat. That’s exactly what’s going through her mind as she deals with the MMA fighter that’s taking up a bed right now. He’s a human punching bag and probably another abuser just like her ex.
When Katy thinks that her ex has tracked her across country, she picks up and moves to another no name hotel. And wouldn’t you just guess who her new next-door neighbor is?? When she tells Dagger what’s going on, he vows to help her and immediately shows her how she’s being tracked. Between the two of them, they leave a trail of breadcrumbs that they hope will lead her ex far away.
During this time Katy sees the man behind the career and is impressed. Having him in her corner is great and she’s finally able to start relaxing, if only a little.
This book is very well written, with endearing characters, and a storyline that’s guaranteed to drag you in and hold you in a headlock until you’ve read ever last word. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next in this series.

If there is one type of book I love more than the rest, it is romantic suspense. Throw a fighter into the mix and I am down. After reading the blurb for Dagger I was excited to dive in, but I I have mixed feelings about my first book from S.L. Sterling.

While I didn't quite know what to make of him the first time I met him, Dagger grew on me. He was down on his luck for sure, but he never counted himself out. He knew he was destined for better things and he worked his tail off to make that happen. But when he came face to face with the nurse who wasn't interested in his brand of alpha, but clearly needed his help, it brought all his protective instincts rushing out.

I admired Katy's independence and strength. And the more I learned about all she had lived through and came out on the other side of, the more I rooted for her. And as she spent more time with Dagger, she started to lose her pre-conceived notions she had made about him. She saw his dedication, his persistence, his goodness and she couldn't help but fall for him.

Was it predictable that Katy's past was going to catch up to her. Yes. Did it make me less anxious when it happened? Nope. I could feel the fear pouring off them both. Thankfully, Dagger was on his game and was able to cut off the threat before too much damage had been done. The ending was sweet and I was glad to see they both got what they wanted, a future with each other.

"I already knew I wanted to be the one to see to it that she got everything that she deserved and more."

5 Dagger is officially my new book boyfriend stars!!! I'm in love!!!

It's been awhile since I've "claimed" a book boyfriend as mine but, man, I found it hard with Dagger. Dagger is a tough MMA fighter but with a heart of gold, who finds himself in the ER constantly. And one night while there he meets Katy, a new nurse who isn't falling for his charm. Katy has a dark past and she's not a fool, she's guarded and she's not ready to let anyone in. But that's not going to stop Dagger.

This book is chalk full of danger, suspense and steamy romance. It deals with abuse, so brace yourself, but it's handled in the best way. It's been awhile since I've read an S.L. Sterling book, but I'm so glad I grabbed this one!! And I can't wait to see what's to come with this series!

Derrick aka Dagger meets Kay when he comes to the hospital after another MMA fight. He is drawn to her the moment he lays eyes on her. However Katy isn't having nothing to do with him because her ex was a fighter and she doesn't want to go down that road again. When his land lord boots him for complaining about repairs he ends up at a local hotel until he can figure his next move out. Imagine his surprise when his new neighbor turns out to be Katy. Katy is jumping and at first she thinks he has followed her but learns he was there first. Derrick sees how upset she is so he helps her get inside and then asks what's wrong. Katy explains things to him and it upsets him that another man has hurt her this badly and offers to help her. Things heat up between them and soon its more than just a friendly offer of help. Can Derrick keep her safe from her ex? Will her ex find her? Can they get their happy ending?

This is an amazing story that once I started it I couldn't put it down. The chemistry between them is off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Second start with a Fight! This is the first book of Sterling’s Vegas MMA series. This story is about Derrick (Dagger) and Katy. Derrick is an MMA fighter and ends up in the hospital that they know him on nick name basis. He is dropped off to get fixed up from his last fight and new nurse Katy is not impressed as everyone else is. He is Mr. Popular and not only with the nurses but the docs too. She has had enough abuse in her life that she is done with these types of men.

Dagger is intrigued with her as she is this “next door beauty” that he wants to get to know, only he feels her judgement and anger immediately. Katy is running away from an abusive ex and is never in one place for long. She moves next door to Dagger not knowing that he lives there, but this is where their story takes off. It was sweet to see a man wanting to take care of someone in a manner that Dagger does for her. Katy realizes that not all men are alike and that confidence levels can raise on their own when treated like she should.

S.L. Sterling has started her new series Vegas MMA with a BANG! Dagger was a fantastic story that I simply couldn't get enough of to be honest. Dagger is an MMA fighter, and with this career choice, he's a frequent flyer at the ER, which is where he meets a new nurse named Katy. He feels an instant zing, but she isn't having any of him. This confuses him, but he's in it to win it always, so he's determined to change her mind. I don't want to get into any more of it, since it's so much better to actually just experience it for yourselves, and trust me, you want to experience it. This story checked off all my boxes, and honestly, it's totally worth more than a mere 5 stars. The action, plus the suspense factor providing twists & turns to allow for f-bomb dropping is 5 stars all on it's own. However there's more, like angst & drama, with a sizzling chemistry kicker thrown in. The danger kept my heart racing cover to cover, and I truly loved both Katy & Dagger. So, hit those one click buttons, as you won't be disappointed. As for me?! I CANNOT WAIT for more, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

What a quick but powerful read! Derrick, also known as Dagger, spends his days going through the same cycle of prepping for a fight and then ending up in the ER to assess the injuries from the big fight. A regular in the ER, he starts his usual routine only to be thrown by the new nurse that doesn’t fall for his charm. Katy is on the run from her abusive ex-boyfriend, and sees so much of him in Dagger that she can’t wait to get him fixed up and discharged. But when she thinks her ex has found her and tries to run, she runs into none other than Dagger, and after breaking down and telling him what’s going on, he decides to help. Working together to keep her safe, Katy also realizes he’s different from her ex and they explore the chemistry and feelings they develop. When Katy’s ex finds her and kidnaps her though, everything changes and Dagger gets involved in the fight for her (and his) life. A shorter story but a great storyline and can’t wait to see what happens next in this series.
