A Very Fiona Christmas (A Fiona the Hippo Book) Reviews
-
This picture book was a perfect Christmas read. And I'm not going to lie, I read it aloud to my pups. It's Fiona's first Christmas and she is strolling through the zoo spreading Christmas cheer and learning about the true meaning of Christmas.
The first thing that sticks out about this book is the artwork. I love how all the zoo animals, especially Fiona, are depicted. There's so much to look at in each and every picture and the coloring and details are wonderful. I love animals of all kinds and knew when I saw this I had to grab it.
This book is a definite must for any animal lover. I am hoping this summer I can make the trek to the Cincinnati Zoo, which isn't that far away, to see Fiona in person. -
Super cute! The illustrations are fantastic.

A VERY FIONA CHRISTMAS is an adorable children's book about a hippos first Christmas. Set in a zoo, there is a host of other animals that help Fiona discover what Christmas is.
This is NOT a Christian title so there is no mention of the true meaning of Christmas. The focus is on having fun in the snow, presents, Christmas trees, friends, and love. There is also no mention of Santa.
I love the artwork and the sparkly cover.
A mainstream children's book, this is suitable for anyone, of any denomination or belief. An excellent addition to any children's library.
I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

I received an audio copy of this in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Obvious, as a picture book, this would be better served by actually reading it. But I think the narrator did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. Fiona had a consistent voice, and the other characters were distinct enough that I could tell them apart. There were a few times I could tell the narrator was reading a sign on the page, and that felt a little jarring considering it was breaking up the story and the flow of narration. Despite this, I'd still recommend this story, and the audio for anyone that prefers or needs it. -
Beautiful illustrations and a cute story!

A young hippo in a zoo learns about Christmas. This book had really great illustrations!
-
Cute tie in if you already follow Fiona's story. Seriously, someone needs to write a book about Timothy, the SA Zoo hippo.
-
Nice book

Fiona, the famous hippo from the Cincinnati Zoo, has her first Christmas. This is a sweet (but not too sweet!) sharing of the love and friendship that blossoms during the holiday season.

My Review:
Excitement was building at the zoo as the animals that lived there could feel the anticipation and excitement draw near. Everyone there knew what Christmas was all about, everyone except Fiona. She was the sweetest little hippo baby and she was full of questions about what this "Christmas" was all about. Her friends never did tell her what it was and her Mama explained that its a feeling. Come along and watch little Fiona experience the wonder of Christmas and find out the true wonder of it all.
My children love this story! It was a great story and introduction to Fiona. She is just precious! And we loved the illustrations, too! -
The illustrations are darling, and the gentle storyline makes this one ideal as a bedtime story.
Although Fiona is a real hippo at the Cincinnati Zoo, this story is pure fluff and fantasy. I honestly would like to see more info about Fiona or hippos in general, as hers is an amazing story.
Once again, we see a white tiger cub frolicking amongst the other animals. The American Zoological Association
bans the breeding of white tiger cubs by its member zoos out of concern for both animal welfare and conservation. The animals suffer a myriad of health problems and they do not contribute to the conservation of tigers in the wild. -
A Very Fiona Christmas is a delightful story of a baby hippo discovering Christmas for the first time. Living near Cincinnati, I am familiar with Fiona. She was born six weeks premature at the Cincinnati Zoo. She survived and thrived and has become a favorite of young and old. Richard Cowdrey's illustrations are fantastic. The color and movement of the beautiful characters will delight children. If you are looking for a gift for an animal lover, and what child isn't, pick up a copy of A Very Fiona Christmas. I won't spoil the ending, but I'll say it is perfect. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

While I generally love all things Fiona-related, this book was not one of them. There were no clever nods to other animals mentioned (by name) in the tale, no reference to indicate that this hippo lives in the Cincinnati Zoo or that Fiona is growing and thriving despite her rocky start to life. It felt more like a flimsy excuse to further the author/illustrators alternative agenda of promoting Christianity where it does not need to be mentioned. I honestly regret purchasing this book and giving money to this author.

Challenges: Book-A-Day in May 2021 (21/31); Reading Goal Posts/Stacking the Series - Priority Three/Tier Seven. The first of three books to read for this date in May, Fiona learns what Christmas is, not just the lights and fun with her friends, but for everyone to be included in the heart of giving on this special day. Note the little Koala bear from the new animal enclosure that shows up in many of the illustrations. Detailed and heart warming illustrations as usual by the author. Loving this visit with little Fiona.

This is a fine story about a hippo named Fiona, worthy of 3 or 4 stars. But as a story about the "Fiona", the book just doesn't work. Richard Cowdrey has the association with Cincinnati and thus the Cincinnati Zoo, so he should have been able to include details about her home and about her personality. Sadly he failed to write a story about the social butterfly that is the real Fiona just like he failed to reflect her home.

This is such an adorable children’s book!! It is a story about how the hippopotamus, Fiona from Cincinnati Zoo learns what Christmas is all about and how to celebrate. The illustrations are lovely and there is a great message in this book that Christmas Is about others. I appreciate the importance that is showed how giving to others was a beautiful thing.
-
Ah! Love this new Christmas title! So sweet and fun--the kids and I loved reading it together! A definite recommend for your own Christmas library or for a gift. Thanks for sending a copy my way for review, Zondervan!
-
It's important to note that this is not a book about the actual hippo, Fiona. It is a fictional, illustrated story of what Christmas is to Fiona. I thought it would be another book of actual photos of the hippo. I was disappointed. The story doesn't feel cohesive, and it also feels forced.
-
I love Fiona and I just loved this book. Fiona's First Christmas and how the other animals in the Cincinnati Zoo show her exactly what Christmas really is. I love all the bright and cheerful holiday illustrations. I highly recommend this book to kids of all ages.
-
It's Fionas first Christmas at the zoo and all the animals are excited to show Fiona what Christmas is all about. Fiona finds out Christmas is more than just presents it's also about sharing it with the ones you love and friends old and new even if you live in a zoo.
-
Delightful illustrations help tell the story as Fiona the Hippo discovers the spirit of giving love and friendship at Christmas as she meets a new friend, Chloe the Koala, and helps Chloe fit in with the rest of the zoo animals.
-
A super cute Christmas book about everyone's favorite hippo, Fiona!
-
Loved it!
-
Cute children's book with the real meaning of Christmas. It's better to give then receive. I loved it!
