J ane Lovell 's poems are both beautiful and disturbing. A deep feeling for the natural world is aligned with an acute lyric sensibility, as well as a profound ethical awareness of our responsibility for the planet and the devastation of its landscapes and vulnerable species.

A favorite poet of mine, Jane Lovell speaks in a language of love for Earth, for its beginnings and ending. In this collection, she travels through time, into caves, to islands around the globe—her raw and detailed images of places and histories, of the planet’s persistence to survive in spite of human interference.
Though I list favorites below, there is not a poem in this small book that I do not want to return to, to feel all the feels.
♥️ “Song of the Vogelherd Horse,” “The Prayer of Saint Simon,” and “Red Cardinal”
