David and Alan are in their mid-twenties, best friends since junior school in the Yorkshire mill town where they grew up. When Alan left to live in London six years ago, David was left with memories of one night together which he quickly buried. Now married to Mona with two boys, he has a comfortable life with a good job driving buses. He enjoys his work, is well thought of and has prospects of promotion.
Alan meanwhile has built a successful career in advertising, leaving his upbringing far behind. He has a circle of close friends, lives in a fashionable suburb and drives an expensive car. Called back to Yorkshire by an aunt’s illness, he is brought face to face with memories of his childhood and adolescence… and his old friend David.
When David takes a new job driving coaches to London and stays with Alan, the rekindling of their friendship proves to be incendiary. This plunges David into a maelstrom of conflicting emotions about his future, his feelings for Alan, his marriage and his two sons. If marrying Mona was a mistake, can he find the courage to acknowledge the fact and the words to admit it? And would he really fit in to Alan’s new life?
When events intervene, David’s dilemma is resolved in a sudden and unexpected way, and everybody’s lives are altered for ever.
Veering off Course (The Navigation Quartet, #1) Reviews
-
The main characters of this book were best friends since childhood. They go their separate ways after completing school and spending a night together . Even though they have strong feelings for each other, David chose to deny it and made a life for himself and lives for the sake of it. Alan however, has flourished in London. Loss of a loved one brings them back into each another’s life and they pick up where they left off all those years ago.
What didn’t work for me in this one is the that David blatantly cheats on his wife with no disregard of the consequences even though the author says he knows how his wife will react given his mother in laws views. Also, the writing style didn’t depict any great love and passion between the characters, they call each another lad and love interchangeably, which didn’t sit well with me.
This does end in a cliffhanger and we will have to wait for the next installment to see what happens after their affair has been found out. -
Emotional but Captivating Story!
The author placed me, the reader, in this area of England. I was there even though I have never actually been in that area. The story was emotional. I cried for the characters. I felt the turmoil of all of them. I felt the love of David and Alan. Usually I do not go for stories with a strong theme of infidelity. This was an exception. This is the first book that I have read by this author but it will not be the last. There were a few editing errors. I hope that changes in other books. -
A fantastic story filled with intriguing and entertaining characters. Hit you in the feels, the story aucks you in and keeps you wanting more. Beautiful, emotional, and overall amazing.
Veering Off Course by Chris Cheek is the first book in a new series and ends in a Happy for now type way. Can not wait for more.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation. -
I really enjoyed reading this fantastic, poignant, powerful, bittersweet, emotional, gripping, and grab-you-by-the-feels twist on the traditional friends-to-lovers and second chance romance tropes. It pulled me in from the very first page, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next entry of the fascinating Navigation Quartet series.

A second chance romance that involves childhood best friends who end up going their separate ways after high school and having spent a night wrapped up in each other. Despite the infidelity, I found myself wanting the Alan and David to have a successful go at it. Like most other readers have mentioned, this is a bit of an emotional read but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
