A Horus Heresy story
The webway war is over, the Blood Angels have arrived on Terra and preparations for the final battle have begun. But can Arkhan Land solve a problem and fix the issues that stop the Blood Angel Zephon from fighting alongside his brothers once more?
READ IT BECAUSE
The deliciously amoral tech-priest Arkhan Land was one of the highlights of The Master of Mankind, and this story delves further into exactly what he's willing to do in order to solve a tricky problem – and what consequences can arise from his actions.
THE STORY
At the height of the Webway War, renowned Mechanicum technoarchaeologist Arkhan Land ventured into that alien labyrinth in defence of the Imperium. At his side was a wounded warrior of the Blood Angels, Zephon. Now, Land faces a great challenge – to repair the damage done to Zephon, partly as a result of the tech-priest's own tinkering. But how can Land succeed where the greatest of Apothecaries have failed? And when all is done, will the only person the tech-priest comes close to calling friend still be the same man?

May 2024 Re-Read using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Omnibus XVIII Omnissiah II End of Empires (
https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...) as part of my Oath of Moment to complete the Horus Heresy series and extras.
Enjoyed returning to this bittersweet amuse bouche and having nothing more to add beyond having a great time with the Ravoc Reading Fan Reading and sharing a link to that and the A Border Prince one I'll checkout eventually, which has lead me to starting *another* document lol.

I've been missing ADB so much and I often think back to the halcyon days of Omnibus X Shadow Crusade III Chosen of Chaos. Ah, such good times sad times... But now you come back into my life with a mind-blowing book about what the unchecked unchecked self-confidence of a man can lead to and you follow it up with the most sweetly silly toned ace buddy story that ropeadoped me into forgetting about the whole grimdark thing. Curse and praise you!
The famed Technoarchaeologist Arkhan Land. Ever heard of him? Well, you may have heard of a certain Raider and Skimmer that are the back bone of the Imperium? They ain't named for the surface they move on baybee! They're named after a meglamaniacal genius, ace king, heretek edger, and complete and total manipulative bastard. If you played Horus Heresy: Legions he was a featured Warlords a season or so back--very fun card game and can be viable to play without engaging with all the lootbox BS and there is a lot of lootbox BS, but it's a fun game #NotAnAd
What about Zephon? The Bringer of Sorrow? Once a captain Captain, Crusader and the canary, but always an Angel? Only Space Marine to see action in the Impossible City? A genuinely fascinating character and one of the more thoughtfully handled disabled characters I look forward to talking more about when I eventually return to The Emperor of Mankind.
This unlikely pair found a strange kind of acquaintaneship forged in the ancient battleground under the Palace and below the Below, more from the fact that Zephon is just a genuinely sweet and angelic soul, truly a side of the IX we haven't seen for some time, which makes him somone Land hates less than everyone else. With Sanguinius finally touching down on Terra and Zephon's reaction touching my heart, Land does his absolutely illegal genius to finally give the Blood Angel augemetics that work smoothly and without constant agony. Surely, this is just a kind and selfless act between friends?
A super quick little story with a joyous, whimsical tone that endears itself to you, just so it can stab you in your heart like the poison tail of a monkey.
Bastards be bastards, but damn if Land isn't compelling and other words beginning with C. I absolutely love Zephon and I really appreciate the way ADB has written about the Astartes' disability and difficulties with his augemetics.
A little bittersweet treat!
Through using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project (
www.heresyomnibus.com) and my own choices, I have currently read 39 Horus Heresy novels (including 1 repeat and 4 anthologies), 22 novellas (including 2 repeats), 117 short stories/ audio dramas (including 6 repeats, but not including a number of additional repeats for clarity), as well as the Macragge's Honour graphic novel, All 17 Primarchs novels, 4 Primarchs short stories/ audio dramas, 2 Characters novels, and 2 Warhammer 40K further reading novels and 1 short story...this run, as well as writing 1 short story myself (
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1t...). I can't say enough good about the way the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project suggestions. I'm loving it! Especially after originally reading to the releases and being so frustrated at having to wait so long for a narrative to continue. -
Following on from The Master of Mankind, this continues the story of two unlikely friends – the Technoarchaeologist Arkhan Land and the crippled Blood Angel Zephon. In the wake of the Webway War, as the Blood Angels and Sanguinius return to Terra, Land turns his genius to the problem of how to permanently repair Zephon’s failing bionics.
The focus is on Land in all his grouchy, socially awkward glory, and through his interactions with Zephon we get a further glimpse of what their relationship means to him. It’s very much a quiet, focused character study, with an intriguing reversal of the usual legionary/human dynamic.

Masterful short story. Engaging enough from the start with subtle character work but you really don't know quite where it's going until BANG POW RIGHT IN THE FEELS and then a nice little button to follow. I haven't read Master of Mankind and this still had me in (a couple, manful) tears.
-
I had no idea Space Marines could be so adorable.
-
I would read a full set of books with these two characters in them. And I would definitely read about Land's adventures. Loved it.
-
A pretty short but interesting story building a little bit further on the odd couple that is Arkan Land and Zephon from their introduction in Master of Mankind.
-
Arkham Land. The Cawl before Cawl was a thing.
-
I can't wait for Land to go missing in a technotomb and/or be devoured by flayers.
-
Arkhan Land is a delight to read. This makes me look forward to
The Master of Mankind as I enjoyed this short and sweet story immensely. Even if it was just these 17 pages
Black Library Celebration 2020 would have been an amazing gift from Black Library.
