Morrin has waited a long time to claim his throne, and even longer to have a real family. It may not be a conventional family, consisting of his closest friends, his brother Istari, and Istari's spouse and children, but it's one he loves and is proud of. No odious brothers, no abusive father, no cowardly mother.

The very last thing he wants is to upset the balance by taking a wife, but his friends are right in that seeing him married will go a long way toward repairing the damage caused by his war-mongering, tyrant father. He just didn't expect them to suggest the blandest princess in the castle.

    Aro representation FTW!

Thoroughly enjoyable continuation of this series. Loved the whole relationship dynamic :)

I enjoyed this one but it wasn’t my favourite of the series. I enjoyed a further look at Morrin and his poly relationship. ( I enjoy reading poly stories so this part didn’t bother me at all). I thought the poly aspect of the story was handled well as each person had their own personality and the only thing I could say against it is that I would have liked a bit more to delve further into the relationship.

I liked the Princess and how strong she was, I just didn’t quite understand how Morrin didn’t see through the disguise himself and felt that once she was pointed out to him he was attracted very quickly without actually getting to know her. I did like the inclusion of her intersex character as I not sure I have read one before, so it was interesting to me,

Lovely short story that tells the story of how King Morrin's lovers find him a queen and that expands on the Unbreakable Soldiers setting.

Content warnings include: violence; mentions of: slut shaming, misogyny, abusive parents, human trafficking, suicide.

I liked Morrin and his group of friends, who are in an polyam relationship. The plot around them having found the perfect queen for him was lovely, and I liked how Morrin worked in getting to know her, and she herself was great as well.

There were frequent mentions of the characters and events of
The Painted Crown, which I adored! I also liked that there was an intersex character, and that Morrin's being aromantic was always respected as well as mentioned directly.

The aromantic representation was great, I only wish the book had been longer and there was more focus on Morrin and his future queen getting to know and like each other - as in, they got to know each other more slowly and gradually rather than the rather aprubt way it is in the book.

4.5 stars. Delightful! Not only do we have an aromantic and omnisexual main character, as well as his four lovers, we also have one intersexual and one asexual character. And those are all strong characters, some more cunning and with shrewd business minds, others more physically strong and well-trained, but all with strong personalities. I loved it! How can you not love such skilled kick-ass characters interacting with each other.
With all those sexually involved characters there is of course some sexy time on page, m/m, m/f and in the background f/f.

I have liked the two previous stories in this series but this one was definitely not my cup of tea. I get that characters have had affairs with different people and that's fine but somehow so many people at the same time is just .... nope not for me. It was a very short read and most of it takes place in the bedroom. I need more story, more character development that I got in her other books. So I would not recommend this to anyone, I just disliked it.

I don't know what to say about this book. My rating is not necessarily related to a lot of the things my ratings usually cover. I didn't mind the story or the writing. I actually enjoyed getting to know Morrin a little more after being introduced to him in book 2 of the series.

BUT when what I really wanted was a book about Bertin and Kessel, characters introduced in book 1, I wasn't really going to vibe with this little novella as much. I am also not a fan of polyamory, though I did appreciate the aromantic representation, since that seems to be more rare. I just don't like reading about relationships with multiple sexual partners. I don't identify with it personally, though I try not to judge others, but it's such a strong personal thing for me that I can't really seem to enjoy any stories that involve polyamory.

Anyway, that's why I gave it 2 stars. Yeah.

    Okay

For being a short story, it was okay. I'm astonished by people saying there was nothing but sex. I was expecting it to be every other page like in the last few books of the Dance with the Devil series. I wouldn't say there was a ton of story going on but it's certainly more than a mouse bite. The book gave enough to get a feel for the characters but most definitely could not have made for a full length novel without becoming drawn out and cumbersome. The thing I like about her stories is that she tells a characters story in just one book but continues to include them throughout others in the series. I'm looking forward to book 3 so on we go.

Megan Derr always leaves me wanting more.

I love Megan Derr’s work and this book, though considerably more raunchy that usual, is no exception.
Well written, engaging characters with a fairytale flair. What’s not to love. I hope to see more from this universe in the not too far distant future.

A more lighthearted entry in the series

After downloading this one, I reread books 1&2 before starting it. And cried—a lot. I was glad to read a much more lighthearted entry in the series, and the sex scenes were erotic and fun.

There is a lot of sex, which I wasn’t expecting. Aside from that, the story had a nice mix of backstory/history and light action. Morrin is a pretty good character so it was nice to get a bit more of him.

    2.5
A short story with too many sex scenes (it doesn't matter to me if they are with one or many partners) and not that much of a plot. One aromantic pansexual MC and one MC, so I round the rating up for inclusivity.

I loved reading this! It's been a while since anything new from this series came out, so I was quite delighted. I absolutely loved reading about Morrin and his lovers.

This short tale features the king Morrin and I can't say I was a fan. I loved the previous two books but this one was pretty meh. First off, it's a short story, which always irks me. There's so much less room for an author to convey all the needed things, and someone who doesn't write very well needs that extra space far more than someone who can convey 10 meanings with 5 words.

Secondly, I really did not like how Morrin's sexual lifestyle works. I honestly don't mind polyamory or any of the sexual pairings in any of Derr's books. This is specifically Morrin's lifestyle as a king with his advisors and servants and constant sex and no romance that I personally dislike. I read these books especially for the romance. And the previous book (the Painted Crown) was very high on the romance low on the sex, which is my preferred ratio. This one seemed to have flipped that, given us scant character or world to work with, rushed through introducing a 6th member into this 5 group orgy. Even her The Mercenaries of the Stolen Moon did a better job at polyamory than this book did.

There wasn't enough plot in this story to make a full fledged novel, which I get. However, I wish Derr had spent more time considering a better plot and then executing it in a novel form to give this story the nuance it deserves.
