The Snow (The Mutant Rain #3) Reviews

An unexpected end to the series. If you like zombies, vampires, or superheroes, they are all in this series.

What a great series. This book picks up after the events of the fall. Humanity is facing ever growing threats, not just from the zombies but also from some newer, nastier mutations. The survivors face some really tough challenges along the way and ties are formed and severed.
The pace of this book is steady, albeit with some pretty intense battles along the way. The histories of Vasiliy and Dmitri are expanded upon and we learn more about the strange Dr. Zhirkov. There are some great scenes of how people work together / against each other in their mini societies and learn to adapt accordingly. The one thing that let's this down is the terrible editing. There are several incomplete words and spelling errors in the text which cause a minor distraction. Whether this is an error converting to E-book I am not sure but it does detract from what has been an excellent trilogy. This aside, you will be glad you read all three books in this series (as well as the short stories). Recommended for fans of Dystopian and Post Apocalyptic stories.

This is the final book in the Mutant Rain series and ties up all the loose ends from the previous books. Now that winter has struck, instead of the rain falling and giving the mutants power, snow is covering everything in New Hampton. The number of normal humans is dwindling rapidly and there now seems to be more and more mutant creatures appearing in the town, rats the sizes of large dogs, gigantic crocodiles, lizard men, enormous bears and many more.

Dr Zhirkov, with the help of his assistant Dr Fattal, is still experimenting and trying to made a female mutant, something that has escaped them so far. Dr Zhirkov is still using his enforcer Darkmore, to keep the Watchroom gangs in line and to hunt other mutants. Jed has found a new path for himself and is carving his way towards either salvation or doom, killing all in his way. Dmitri and Vitaliy, the Russian soldiers, who were recruited by the Doc over a hundred years ago, have started to question what the doctor is doing and have noticed what is happening to the supposedly supreme and immortal mutant he believes himself to be. A chance for redemption may be there for the two of them once they realise this.

The group of humans who have been using the bunker as their safe house, are beginning to realise that they will no longer be safe in the city, there are too many creatures and zombies coming out of the woodwork and too few people left to be fodder for them. Isaac and Connor have left them. Even Reinhardt has left the bunker, For Farrow, the ex-policeman, it is hard to stay with a diminishing group he feels responsible for, yet not able to keep them all safe. There are a couple of new additions to the small group to come, from the birth of new mutants, to Evaline and Aurora.

The mutants are unaffected by the snow and the cold, only the humans are suffering. The few that are left must leave before the city is completely over run and it seems an escape route may have been found. Part due to systems Dr Zhirkov put in place, part discovery in the moment of need and part investigation of its path out of the city. Revenge is sought by some and will be vicious in its conception! Major battles are popping up throughout the city. Watchmen against mutants. Zombies drawn by the fighting and various creatures arrive to mop up the remains. Even the mutants are wary of the zombie or rat bites.

The exclusive Recluse pops back up and there is also a long awaited reunion of brothers, Jed and Darkmore. Jed is childlike, but has been exposed to too much evil during his short life. His love of animals, and his attempts to cleanse the city of man, are for his own redemption and for his friends, the animals. His ability to suck the life out of others, just from a touch, had made him invincible until he found that there were other mutants so much stronger than him. He is almost back to being the scared little boy he was with an overbearing father and evil older brother. A surprise will await Darkmore.

At the end of the book, each character gets to tell their part of the story and you find out what happens to them, in a chapter of their own. It gives you the closure for each main character, you are looking for after reading about each of the characters over the series of books and various novellas. A conclusion which is parts brutal, all out mutant warfare and running street battles. New life makes a start and some find isolation and peace in their surroundings at last. Some act for others for the first time and for a sense of redemption, after being hoodwinked for decades. Some will get their come-uppance in mundane or drastic manner.

A great way to end the series. You get to easily pick back up on the series from where you last left it and can be left to discover what each of the characters are getting up to. Where they will manage to go from that point and who will survive at the end are there for you to find out. Some of it may be gruesome, but it is what you should expect from previous books and the work of Dr Zhirkov! I’m sad to see the end of the series, as these were all so different from what you may find in other books about mutants and experiments and the like. But, at least there will be some other series or books by the author to look forward to. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

After formulating the barest of plans to save the survivors of “The Bunker,” Farrow, the former New Hampton police detective and his small band of followers return to the city in search of a large truck or bus to take everyone north away from the epicenter of the mutant rain. What they find instead leaves everyone dead except Farrow himself.

It is Benjamin that discovers the old underground train system, still in working condition, and that there is a connection with the commuter line that goes to the north country. The remaining mutants, along with the pregnant Evaline, move their supplies to the train in preparation of departure.

Farrow gets cut off from the rest of the group and he goes in search of Aurora and Isaac. Isaac, however, has been whisked away to Dr. Zhirkov’s stronghold to battle Erica leaving the pregnant Aurora behind to fend for herself. Farrow eventually uncovers her hiding place and convinces her that she and her newborn son should return with him to the mutants’ rendezvous spot to meet the train.

Meanwhile, Zhirkov’s henchmen, Vitaliy and Dmitri, switch sides, rescue a previously unknown group of human survivors and take them to the ready-to-depart train just in time to join in a desperate fight between the mutants and a group of lizard-like creatures and overgrown monsters that are preventing the train from leaving.

All in all, this was a pretty satisfying roundup to all the storylines in the Mutant Rain series. Is there room and opportunity for more in the future? Oh yes. And I hope that this is not the end. I kind of miss those mutants already.

Wow, what a story this has been! From the original novel and the short stories, I've enjoyed them all. This novel is the best yet and probably the last. They fill you in more if you read them all, but this is a fantastic standalone. You'll find an evil doctor, mutants, zombies and freakish animals in here. I've loved the crazy plot from the beginning and this is no exceptions. Enter New Hampton in The Snow and you'll be up reading all night!
