  A heavy storm has all the Lumberjanes stuck in the games hut where a number of them get caught up beat testing Emily's new games as three of the Roanokes find a little adventure underground. Back to feel-good almost-horror adventuring with multiple character development and some ongoing mystery deepenings. Now that;s a mouthful! Love the volume artist's name is Dozedraws! 6 out of 12. In the land of exclamations using iconic women from history, did I hear a Maria Sibylla Merian? Here's some of her ground breaking naturalist illustrations:

  I enjoyed this one! I think in this one, the creators took a step away from the traditional plot of the Lumberjanes novels and they did something a bit different and I really liked it! I liked how we were following two different stories throughout the volume and we were flipping between the two. I liked how there were other characters besides the Roanokes who were actually getting screentime!! Barney, aka the love of my life and the reason I'm still reading this series. Unfortunately, I still find myself a bit disconnected from the Roanokes, but I am determined to keep trying.

  This series is so uneven, blech. Just when it had gotten good again, this volume is pure filler. Slim on action, no character advancement, no plot. The only appeal is the celebration of board game nerds.
  
  Another new artist takes over, someone named “Dozerdraws” which I can only assume is some kind of art A.I. I was not impressed.

  3.5 stars. An improvement over the previous volume. This felt simpler but fun and a different story structure. New artist - I like better than some previous ones. Wish the series would get back to the longer story arcs though.

  I don't normally read graphic novels, but one favorite series of mine has been the Lumberjames which are a bit like the Girl Scouts but with a magical twist. It has been a wee while since we have had a Lumberjane graphic novel but I noticed the other day that we had on order volumes #13 -15 and so I put them on hold. I have to admit this wasn't a favorite volume of mine as the team was split up and it just didn't have the same oomph and connection that the Lumberjanes main girls have in the past graphic novels. We also saw Ripley obeying Jen - like when have the Lumberjanes girls ever obeyed Jen? It's by normally disobeying her rules that they find themselves in trouble which of course Ripley, Mal, and April do end up being chased by ancient insects as A) they disobeyed the rules and went hunting for snacks but then at the end, Ripley has this sudden attack of guilt - it didn't fit her personality that we have seen in all the previous Lumberjanes novels. I think that the other reason this wasn't my favorite was that the Lumberjanes cabin didn't go exploring as a team as a few stayed behind to play indoor games during the storm. In saying that though, It was good to be reunited with the Lumberjanes crowd and I am looking forward to reading the next couple of volumes and seeing what adventures, mayhem, and mischief they get up too.

  This was a fun volume with two diff stories happening between the group. I always rate them high because it’s so filled with friendship, fun, and exciting adventures.

  Another cute volume of Lumberjanes! Not a lot happens in terms of the overarching plot, but it's still fun to see what kinds of shenanigans they can all get up to even if it should just be a rainy day where they are all supposed to stay inside. ;) I liked that we got to see two separate and extremely different ways of passing the time, and I always love seeing more of Barney and Artemis and campers from other cabins.

  This volume really made me aware of exactly my issues and praises for these.
  
  Volume. 13: Indoor Recess is told in 2 distinct story lines, one where a few of our characters play an intense board game, the other where the other half of our main squad discover secret magical creatures and end up in mortal peril. One of those sounds like the obvious filler section, but Lumberjanes has showed us so many similar vaguely spooky creatures for the girls to run away from and beat with the power of friendship that the board game segments were by far the highlights here because you knew there you'd at least get some kind of resolution.
  
  I don't have anything against Monster of the Week stories, but normally even those are slowly building up to something and these books keep teasing an overarching plot only to instantly fall back into the formula and its really getting old. That being said, I am physically incapable of giving up on these because of how endeared I am to these characters and how invested the writers can still make me in the outcome of a made up board game.

  Such a fun read that really brought me back to indoor recess as a kid!
  I absolutely loved the transitions between Mal, Ripley, and April in the tunnels and the remainder of the group (with our returning side characters) playing a vicious and complicated board game. They were very entertaining and kept the pace moving.
  The tunnels were super cool (and such a mystery as to why they exist) and the idea of massive ancient bugs terrifies me.
  Also I would totally lose a board game like Penterra - but I'd have fun losing at least!

  The story was fine, but nothing special. I feel like the series has sort of been running in place a bit. I still enjoy spending time with the Janes, but I'm kind of glad they are planning to wrap things up.

  I've lost track of who the artists have been. I couldn't really tell you if this is the same artist as the previous volume or a new one. I think the artwork is always fine, but has never really blown me away.

  There wasn't much of a story for this volume. The characters didn't seem to be true to their past selves. The drawing was really different; Mal looked like a different character. I'm not sure why things changed so dramatically from the last volume to this one, but it was a disappointing read.

  These are really a lot of the same. Which is... Fine. I'd like some more variety of situations or interests. I gave it a 4 star bc I really liked the art, I'm glad they moved on. I did not love the artist from 11 & 12.

  By stretching the definition of "inside" in a way that is very much in keeping for these characters, what sounds like a bottle episode manages to turn into one of their more active adventures. There are two stories going - one exploring oversized insects and dark paths below the camp, and the other a tabletop game that continuously grows in size and complexity. I enjoyed both plots a lot, although I think the game story gets the nod as the favored just because of Artemis' involvement.
  The art, the characters, and the humor are all perfectly on point for the series, and it manages to pass along its upbeat messages of friendship, support, and positivity in as pleasant a method as always. Definitely recommended.

  It's a rainy day and the 'Janes have promised Jen they'll stay inside the mess hall with everyone for the duration of the dangerous storm. Molly, Jo, Barney and Diane end up playing a fellow camper's new game with unexpected twists, while Mal, Ripley and April go on a snack run and end up finding some brand new creatures in an underground excursion that doesn't *technically break the rules. This was hilarious and delightful. I loved Emily's new game, and all the different ways of playing it. The adventure was very Janey, and oh, sweet baby Ripley, ha. This felt much more slight of plot and stakes than normal, but it was a very fun diversion.

  Indoor recess for me always consisted of movies, reading, or sometimes games. I remember constantly being herded into a big room with all the other kids and watching the same movies every time this happened hah. Lucky for the Lumberjanes, they seemed to get more of a game day and adventure. In this volume, we follow half the girls who get wrapped up in games - which of course ends up having magical elements, and then the other half of the girls go off to explore an underground tunnel they found. This definitely felt different that the usual storylines and I enjoyed following multiple stories instead of just one.

  I love the two storylines in this one! Ripley is so endearing in her commitment to obeying her promise to Jen. And that game that one of the girls came up with looked amazing! I loved how Molly was just chill and knitting the whole time and that Barney turned into a complete tyrant. This is such a fun series!

  I very much liked this one! From the out of control tabletop game to the glowing random caves underneath the mess hall, this volume was a very lighthearted affair all around! (Also, I like the new illustrator's work.)
