I'm old enough now that I'm getting the little aside-jokes that the kids are too young to catch.
I see you there, lyrics-from-2000's-era-Sonic-songs-pretending-to-be-dialogue. I see you. -
this was a fun comic! i loved sonic’s character arc and the general progression of the story. i loved seeing sonic work together with the other characters to fight against neo metal sonic. i didn’t enjoy this book quite as much as i did the first two in the series, but overall it was still pretty entertaining

[This review covers the first year of Sonic The Hedgehog - volumes 1-3]
IDW's Sonic ongoing launches right off the back of the end of Sonic Forces; Eggman has been defeated, and the world is slowly being put to rights again by the Restoration. But of course, all is not as it appears as a new foe makes themselves known who looks mysteriously like Eggman himself.
It's been a long time since I've read Sonic's comic adventures. I used to read the UK Sonic The Comic for a while when I was younger, but this is my first foray into the US stuff, and it's...really good? It manages to straddle the line of being an all-ages book without pandering to younger readers, and it deals with some pretty heavy ideas at times. The second volume especially has some pretty dark moral quandries for Sonic and friends to navigate, but that's all balanced out nicely by Sonic's carefree attitude and the sheer fun of seeing him beat the crap out of bad guys.
All your favourite characters show up here eventually too; it feels a bit like an old Marvel comic where each issue has a new guest star, but they all bring something new to the story and feel relevant rather than just forced - the Chaotix help Sonic investigate Eggman, while Silver and Blaze have input from the future/alternate dimensions to add, for example, while Sonic and Shadow fighting each other never gets old. It all culminates in a big throwdown featuring everyone versus the true villain of the story with the fate of Angel Island and the Master Emerald in the balance, and I just love typing sentences like that.
The new additions to Sonic lore are great too - Tangle and Whisper fit nicely into the group without feeling derivative of any other hero, while Rough & Tumble and Doctor Starline flesh out the villain camp quite nicely. Starline especially is one to watch, I think.
The art goes through a few changes, but I'm pretty sure most of these artist are familiar with Sonic's world, as is writer Ian Flynn who I believe follows Sonic across from his previous rights owners, Archie Comics. The art is always bright and colourful, but the subtle differences between artists gives each issue its own unique feeling without being too tonally dissonant.
I'm glad I dove into Sonic's world once again; there's something comforting about this series, and yet it doesn't shy away from building and building as it goes. Now all I need is to get City Escape out of my head and we'll be good. -
The artwork and pacing of this book actually had me burning through it at sonic speeds. I really liked the spin and twists the plot had, with the ultimate reveal of the characters who are pulling the strings from behind the scenes making the long term narrative more appealing.
Sonic and his friends litearly all have to pull together to take down Neo Metal Sonic who poses more of an ideological threat than a disastrous one. Cus like the power of friendship actually works to bring down what I thought could be a longer lasting villain arc. I really hope they do something more with NMS cus he was a cool villain idea. Misguided and lost, trying to recreate what his boss once wanted but failing in that he had no goals of his own to accomplish. -
Still a fun read, I like the new characters introduced, and the art is great!! I do miss the archie series a lot, but these new characters are a great addition. These have a really fast pace and I feel like there's not a lot of proper build up for the villains yet.

Volume 3 of the new IDW Sonic series, so collecting 4 issues.
Plot: Having conquered Angel Island and seized the Master Emerald, Neo-Metal Sonic waits for the heroes. All the characters we've met so far as assembled to take back the island, although none is more ready to go than its Guardian, Knuckles. Meanwhile, a new villain using a new magical gem attempts to revive Dr. Robotnik's memory.
Issue-by-Issue Plot:
My Thoughts: A satisfying conclusion to the first year of the new series... I guess I'll have to stop calling it "new." I can happily suggest this series to anyone.
But, Archie fans, I'm still calling them the "Freedom Fighters," though. And while I really enjoyed that gang (Sally, Bunny, Antoine, etc.), I feel like this slimmed-down cast still works. There were already a lot of characters, just from the games, so it doesn't feel too much like they're missing. And maybe they're not, just living somewhere off-panel. I can dream, can't I? -
Nice! Feels like a mashup of Sonic Heroes (one of my favorite Sonic games btw!) and Sonic Forces. I’m not too familiar with the new characters Whisper and Tangle, but they seem cool, moreso Whisper with her power/connection with(?) the wisps. Not sure how I feel about another magical gem besides the Chaos and Sol emeralds. I don’t want it to become like Pokemon where the legendaries lost their uniqueness.
Also, I thought the artwork was sleek and colorful. Super looked fabulous with that golden sheen. I like the few derpy moments too. -
A blockbuster that's a tad short on dialogue, but a fun read nonetheless! There's way more focus on action in this volume. The raid on Angel Island itself is a little simplistic, but the addition of Burning Blaze and Neo Metal Sonic going all out against the resistance is fun to watch and answers some fun power-scaling questions the fanbase has had for years. A fun bombastic read that absolutely gets a recommendation from me.

As always, reading these volumes has been a breeze due to nostalgia and pure love for these characters. I genuinely adore their dynamics together as one big team!
“Man, I hope we’re getting hazard pay for this...”
I’m still incredibly invested in following this storyline and enjoying every minute of it. The underlying mystery of Eggman is slowly unraveling and it’s satisfying!
I really love Whisper and how everyone on the team is so respectful and understanding of her desire for distance. Sonic respects her boundaries and it’s just great to see! A good way for younger readers to learn how people my be “weird” and different from you, but that doesn’t make them bad in any way. Could be a great teaching moment about boundaries if reading with kiddos!
The art in this series has also just been fantastic! I love the slight variations from artist to artist and it was worth reading just for that frame of Knuckles getting the Master Emerald back. I don’t want to put it here but when you see it, you’ll know. It made me laugh for five minutes. Genuinely.
This truly is full of the humor I missed having, from the art to the banter to the plot. I’m biased, but I truly do highly recommend this series. For old and new fans alike. -
And with this volume that wraps up the IDW Sonic series' first major story arc. It is a little weird how it turned into a Sonic Heroes adaptation whilst still confirming that game's events already took place but the art and character work more than made up for it and it ultimately puts a cap on our introduction to what we can be expecting from this series moving forward.
Flynn's writing has been solid throughout so far and here he ratchets up all his Flynn-isms to 11 including nerdy Sonic deep references and satisfying interactions that only feel as satisfying through the lens of knowing Sega's limitations on the core cast.
And likewise Yardley and Stanley's art manage to feel cohesive for the contained singular story this volume has which helps a lot, especially with the colours team helping marriage their unique styles together.
A fun time whilst setting up new stuff for future arcs. -
These 4 issues have one of the greatest built-up battles in Sonic comic history. (Not counting Sonic: Endgame from the Archie run, which is my personal favorite) The conflict felt a little early, but I think that it works for the way it was set up. Super Neo Metal Sonic gets introduced in issue 9 and my gosh, it is the best fight in this entire collection. Shadow was portrayed a bit too edgy and aggressive here, but I overall liked his character. Overall a really good collection and I need to start reading about the Metal Virus Saga soon.

short series review: The 2017 IGN reboot reunites the Archie Comics team of artists and writers, breathing much-needed new life into the Sonic franchise after the events of the Sonic Forces video game. Some new elements and characters were hit or miss, but overall, it's a joy to see the gang back together. Series review to come!

I have to say, these really brought me back. Mild spoiler, but the two pages of Metal Sonic's transformation into the giant-dragon-final-boss-version made me an eight-year-old kid playing the Sonic Heroes cutscene over and over again because I thought it was so cool.

Listen, this is a GOOD sonic arc, you hear. 10/10, the best one I’ve read so far from the IDW series (I’ve only read two volumes up until this point tho so)
-
OK, tahle série je prostě komiks čistě pro Sonic fanz. Přál bych si propracovanější děj i finále, ale užívám si to. Ian Flynn má nahráno a ví, co dělá.
-
the series is getting better, as the story finally takes off for a cool conclusion to the neo metal sonic saga, and the art is as good as ever
-
Neo Sonic evolves like a Pokemon and takes over Angel Island.
-
best metal sonic appearance in recent years!!!
-
The battle of Angel Island!! Burning Blaze! That's all I have to say about this volume. The cheeky comments from Sonic to Metal I absolutely adore
-
This volume of Sonic the Hedgehog was very exciting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ~ Lizzie :)

Amazing, the book is populated with stories! Each character was seen in one of the former issues, which means each one links to another story that happened before. If you're looking for a new favorite character, here is where you would find one. It really is an incredible volume, with (Spoiler alert) a powerful rival suddenly joining forces with the fighters. I thought this would be the end of the sonic comic link, but it turns out...
There is so much more this story. -
3.5 pretty solid ending to this otherwise weak arc
