Very short story about two siblings marooned on a Welsh island who make a wish on a mermaid’s purse.

Interesting and mysterious, I wish it was longer.

  • Bren fall in love with the sea.

The Siren's Curse: A Haunting and Chilling Short Story by Angharad Thompson Rees

    My review:

The Siren's Curse is absolutely beguiling and is beautifully written.

It, of coarse is about the Sirens..a subject I find fascinating since reading the incredible "The Wicked Deep", a book that landed on my favorites of all time list.

This mournful book will appeal to fans of the fantasy genre, short stories or people who just have a deep hunger to read and devour books about the sea.

I love reading stories where the ocean is omnipresent and that is certainly true here. Benedict and Summer are on their way to boarding school when tragedy occurs and they are the only survivors in a sea accident that leave them stranded on an island, desperate for rescue.

They find the purse of a siren..the legend has it that if you make it wish into it and throw it back into the sea, that wish will come true.

    Will it?

This is such a short book but with such depth..Characters are written wonderfully. I adored Summer! The book is vivid and gorgeously written. And it stings too, stings and beguiles, like a Siren's call.

Highly recommended for a quick but not light read. I loved it.

    From the Deep

Benedict describes sirens of my nightmares...of all our nightmares! Pray you don't go into the deep. Knowing how to swim isn't a guarantee. There won't be a beautiful siren coming to the rescue. This siren is coming to claim her prize..

Angharad's writing is hauntingly sumptuous. This is how you tell a story. Brava.

A random freebie I found on Amazon. I wanted something quick and different. This fit the bill!

The story follows siblings who are stranded on an island after their boat was wrecked. They are the only survivors and it has been days and they are losing hope. Things happen and Benedict gets a good face-to-face with the siren of the sea.

I felt for Benedict. He really blamed himself and he regrets leaving shore.

I do not want to spoil anything, but the ending was good. I loved the twist and it really makes sense. It also is scary. *shudders* The ocean is a scary beast. Beautiful, but scary indeed.

Honestly, I really wanted this to be longer. I wanted more story to learn about our characters and get more of a glimpse into the truth of the siren.

    Plus I adore that cover!

If you are looking for a really good short story, this is the one for you. Super quick, but makes you think and feel. I'll give this 5 stars even though I felt like it could've been longer.

    A haunting short story.

I have to say this short story quite surprised me. Very thought-provoking, a little haunting and very entrancing! I really loved the end. I would read more stories similar to this and would recommend this to anyone wanting a quick bite- sized read.

I gave this short story three and a half undersea stars.

The story is simple. A brother and sister are stranded on an island. They hope to be rescued, but haven't seen anything for days, maybe even weeks. With supplies quickly dwindling down to nothing, the brother and sister duo risk a swim out to their partially-sunken ship when something strange occurs.

Overall, I really did enjoy this story. It's not my typical read, and that was what enticed me to read it.

The brother and sister in this story were believable as being related, and you could definitely feel the desperation of their situation.

I will say that the blurb feels a tad bit overstated. Of course you want to get people to read your work with a stunning blurb, but in this case I was slightly disappointed.

This short story did briefly toy with the concept of a siren, but I don't feel that it explored/focused on it enough.

I also don't feel that it had enough adventure for the brother character to tell this tale to others and make it sound epic (the dialogue in the blurb, hint hint) when in reality the story is pretty short and straight to the point. Maybe if there was another element of mystery in there I can see him doing that.

I believe the story was well-written, but could have been a tad longer to explore this concept just a little more fully.

Overall, this is a fun short story if you're looking for a temporary escape from reality. Happy reading!

Highly impressed with this 14 page story! The poetic writing flowed beautifully and the imagery was great! I would definitely agree this was haunting and chilling. I was fully invested by the first page. This isn't centered around the characters and I don't think the author intended for it to be. Highly recommend if you're looking for a short, easy, dark fantasy to disappear into for a few minutes.

This book was a little too short, without much character development.

    Nope!!

This short story really missed the mark on what could've been a pretty interesting premise. One dimensional characters, no real plot and a really stupid ending. This one is a big pass. I'm glad it was free and only took me 10 min to read. I would've been upset if I wasted more time than that.

Frankly I can't recommend this to anyone. It's just a bunch of nonsense that I had to force myself to keep reading.
