Most people don't think about where they're going to be when the world ends. On the beach drinking margaritas? In the arms of a lover?

How about in a shit-ass resort run by your shit-ass parents?

I have always lived my life as the perfect daughter. At seventeen, I had no other option than to follow my parents' strict regiment. Did I mention that they're assholes?

The world didn't decide to suddenly end. Oh no, that would be too easy. Instead, it was a series of events that led to its eventual demise. Earthquakes, tornados, and a mysterious virus that turned people into raving lunatics. Fortunately for me, I have the help of seven handsome men to combat the coming storm. Literally.

Declan, an enigma from my past. Ryder, a flirty musician. Asher, the sweetest boy I had ever met and probably the only one that I don't want to kick in the balls. Tamson, shy and timid, with a past I'm aching to uncover. Ronan, my sarcastic leprechaun. Fallon, the stoic leader. And, finally, Calax (but he doesn't really matter because I kind of hate him and want him to fall on his head and die).

I will have to learn to rely on these boys and myself if we're going to survive the apocalypse.

This is a slow-burn reverse harem series.

Warning: This book deals with sensitive issues such as abuse, rape, and suicide that some readers may find triggering. Reader discretion is advised.

The Darkness We Crave (Together We Fall, #1) Reviews

  • Al *the semi serial series skipper*

I'm not sure what this book wanted to be. The entire premise was confusing. At first I thought it was going to be a contemporary RH, then a PNR RH but now it's going into the dystopian area so I'm really confused. Before picking it up I was aware it was RH, that was all I knew. I didn't read the blurb or anything, just got a copy after I saw a friend add it to their tbr.

Addie was a hoot, most of the time. I can certainly connect with her, she really didn't know how to talk to people because she had been home-schooled her entire life and she literally had no one to talk to so she had to talk to herself and have pretend conversations. I could understand why she said everything that came to her head. She also didn't know how to interact with other people, she knows how people act from show on tv and it's outrageous watching her act that way.

The guys on the other hand have no personality. There is nothing to differentiate them, it's RH after all so they are all connecting to her for some reason or the other. I will be checking out the next book though. I want to see what's caused this plague.

--- contradictory confused review alert ---

I don't know how to better explain how I felt with this story but I'll try to do it anyway...

This book is a 4 stars at the same time that it isn't! It is a 3 stars at the same time that it isn't! It's enjoyable at the same time that it isn't! I liked at the same time that I didn't liked!

Saw? I'm super contradictory and I'm confusing your minds but it is this!

We follow our main character - Adelaide - and her rich life with her bad abusing parents. She is only 17 years (what I 50% revealed). Even though her parents are abusing to her/beat her/spank her, she still defends them which I was a bit ''Girl, don't! The apocalyptic part starts at 70% of the book (which I was sad cause I picked this book for it) but I have to give to the author the fact that this part was really well writen and angsty.

In the end I enjoyed the reading experience but the book isn't up to my reading experience. I just don't know... Has books that we simply give big ratings because of the experience and you just have to accept it.

    Ok.
    So.
    What the F??

To say this book is confusing is an understatement.
Please check book 3 for some kind of review
    here.

Trigger warnings: Those are super real. Torture, physical and mental abuse, mention of rape, PTSD, gore, psychopathic behavior and more and more coming in the following books. Some scene are fade to black, some are really graphic and some will just break your heart. To read at your own discretion.

  • Paula

Best book ever!!! Maybe even more than Ariel Kimber series. I'm in love guys ❤❤❤

  • Annette

I'm so ashamed! I already discovered Katie May over a year ago, I won one of her books, I really loved the Supernaturalette series and somehow I never read anything else. I devoured the books already out for the Damning and now it's time to start her completed series. I have to admit that I kinda regret getting the omnibus of this book, since it's big to hold, but I'm very excited to explore this world and to get to know these characters.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect of this story, which means I just trusted May and dived in, happy to welcome whatever would come. And although the title already speaks about Darkness, I was quite surprised HOW dark this book actually is. Quite a lot that happens to our heroine is only implied, but implications alone are enough to paint this horrible picture of her daily life. Which means I rooted for her from the very start.

I have to admit that the introductions of the seven guys went a little quick. I love big harems, but I usually need a little time to get to know everyone, to link the right personality and history to the right name. In this case it took a while before we actually got the backstories, or at least parts of it, and therefore for a long time it felt like these guys were just one big group instead of seven different people. I'm very excited though to learn more about them in future books!

Just like I can't wait to see more of the new world and to explore everything that's going on. A big part of the first book is used for world building, the world as it is before the virus and before the disaster, but in the finale a lot of exciting things happen and it feels that the plot has really started now. There are loads of questions that need to be answered and loads of mysteries that need to be solved. I will therefore certainly pick up the second book soon! I want more!

    Ragers!

So this really is dystopian... It's kinda like if you mash together all those apocalyptic movies about natural disasters, only in book form, and throw in the beginning of Fear the Walking Dead...like when everything is just beginning to go to hell. That's the setting of this book.

Then you add in a FMC that's got a tragic past of abuse who also has a severe case of verbal diarrhea... plus some terrible parents and seven hot guys made for an end of the world scenario who are totally all in, all out.

Yep, and it's actually good! This was one of those series I put off because I didn't think it would be that good. I was wrong. It's great.

The characters - Addie, Calax, Declan, Ryder, Ronan, Tamson, Asher, and Fallon.

To be honest the only ones I can't keep straight at this point are Ronan and Ryder. I am sure that will be sorted in the next book though.

There is a lot of room for character growth with Addie right now. She is a hot mess right now. I look forward to seeing her come into her own though.

  • S.R. Harris

This book was better than I was expecting.

I love, love Addie, she is truly a female MC who I want to wrap in a hug and kill her parents for her!!!

The storyline is confusing and it is not, there are still a lot of things that have not been explained that I hope will be explained as the series continues.

What I really want to know is just who is these guys??? And who is Addie's father that no one raises an eye at the type of abuse she is subjected too???

I was freakishly disturbed by one particular scene in this book and I could not wrap my mind around the fact that people, grown adult men and women stood around and watched this happen. If I could have jumped into the story and hurt everyone there for Addie, I would have.

I really hope the guys are planning on getting her away from her parents or again in this case, kill them and if you read the story than you know I am not being harsh...

  • Sharon Mariampillai

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this book series to me. This was an amazing read. I thought the story was fantastic and funny. I loved the heroine, Addie. She was hilarious and snarky. I want her as my best friend. Also, the guys were individually amazing. I love them for their individual style. I am glad that Addie has these guys in her life. I think it will make living in her family a bit easier knowing she has these guys to protect her. I love the ending. Can’t wait to see what book 2 has in store. Overall, an incredible read.

  • ❀ Crystal ✿ - PEACE ☮ LOVE ♥ BOOKS

Another good series start from Katie May, this time about a girl whose everyday life at a luxury resort is utter hell in complete contrast to the ambience of everyone's opulent surroundings. Addie is nothing but a pawn to her parents, two evil and unfortunately powerful scumbags who care so little for their daughter, a daily torture session of some kind is not off the table. With her parents power there is no one to help Addie but herself and so she copes alone with sarcasm and wit her only friend. She blames all the bad things in her life on herself and really has some issues she needs to deal with including cutting which is the only thing that steadies and focuses her mind. The book was a bit outrageous at times. There’s clearly a zombie issue going on but it sort of takes second stage in the story and gets brushed aside. While I really loved Addies snark I hated how often the guys found themselves bowled over with laughter or rolling on the floor, it was too unbelievable and cheesy for me and it took a lot of the fun out of it. There’s so much going on with her guys and so many secrets I can’t wait to unfold. I really want to know what they are all really doing at the resort. Are they undercover? Planning to take out her parents, take them down maybe?! Either way there’s a lot more going on and my interest is peeked. With Addie so injured and now wheelchair-less I imagine she’ll get used to the idea of sicken easily given how much she’ll need their help lol. Then again is Sarge now also going to be a contender for her heart? He would make seven and I still don’t have a handle on all six lol so I hope she takes it slow. Really enjoyed this and looking forward to seeing where things go. Can’t wait to see how these weather anomalies and zombie outbreaks are related!

    2.8-3 stars

Oh boy, so this was an interesting ride and i totally forgot it's supposed to have an apocalypse undertone but you don't really see that until closer to the end and speaking of that ending... talk about a cliff hanger.

The cringe level of this book is probably right up there with Armentrout's work (only JLA is one of my faves) just not executed as well. I still enjoyed reading The Darkness We Crave as it was fast paced and interesting (plus seven hot guys.. oof) however, the constant "oh I must've said my thoughts out loud again. whoops. I'm so quirky and not like other girls" got OLD fast. We get it, MC, you're super special and ordinary how could anyone ever love you? but what is this?? GASP! six insanely hot men are now fawning over you?? must be a joke. Lets talk about our tits and their boners and be all "wait so am i like your sister now? no? ok so i'm NOT your sister?" NO, YOU AREN'T CAUSE THEN THESE MEN WOULD BE IN JAIL YOU DENSE TWIT. *deep breath*
phew now that i got that off my chest... let's discuss the men.

Honestly i only remember a few of their names but i do like the deaf guy, Declan, with the pretty green eyes and bad attitude and the faux hawk.

Trigger warning: abuse, rape, and suicide

This is a reverse harem x zombie book. Yes. You read that right. It's a short book so everything is compacted and fast with some triggering scenes. The reason for the low rating is that the protagonist has a weird thing where she verbally vomits any thought she has and it becomes a game if you think her thought is said aloud or not. It definitely irked me.

  • Patron Saint Fitzwilliam

I know what you see. You see an ethereally beautiful book review about to be read. And, dear reader—what’s that? The fourth wall being broken? Come along for the ride, anyhow. Nothing makes sense anymore!

    Commence bitching:

Why, oh why does the author let Addie tell us she’s “ethereally beautiful?” Really! Addie tells us so many times she knows she’s pretty. This bothers me. And i get it, life has been one big bag of flaming poo. She knows first hand about abuse and pretty much the most terrible things that can be done to a young woman, and yet the basic mechanics of friendship don’t make sense to her? And human interactions? She is at certain points “knowing” and manipulative (yeah! Be fierce, Addie!) and most other times TSTL (sad trombone)?

...And about her abilities with the basics of human language: Why is she always thinking out loud?

...And why don’t we know what her back story is with Callax?

Why didn’t she recognized Declan (ughhhh)?

It takes place in Aspen and the entire book I thought, you know, ASPEN. And then the author says they are in Michigan? So maybe this is a fictional town Aspen, Michigan?

So, much like this review, this book makes no sense. I think if you let Jesus take the wheel (and have a firm stomach for high drama) you’ll enjoy it. I’m not sticking around...

  • Nadia

    boring

  • Kay

    Three things baffle me:

    1) How anyone could be confused about what this book is supposed to be about, genre-wise or otherwise. I mean, if you've read it, you should know, right? It's a slow-burn reverse harem romance, with lots of dark moments (aka physical abuse), crappy human psyche events, and sad personal histories, coupled with some zombies, natural disasters, and the end of the world (approaching dystopia). Oh, and possibly some mafia elements. I mean - super clear! ;) But what it also is, is awesoooome, so rather than finding suitable lables or 'shelves' to put this book on, just read it and enjoy! Embrace the chaos!

    2) How I haven't read this book sooner. Because it rocked. I loved, loved, loooooved Addie, aka the FMC, who is just a whole rainbow of lovely, sad, weird, and funny things. I wanted to hug her, shelter her, listen to her jokes, and be her friend. Oh, and the boys were ok too.

    3) How I'm still writing this review and not reading the next book in this series!

  • Theowlsnest

Great read to start the new year ! I love Adelaide she is so strong and funny she is abused in ways anyone would break but she stays so strong with a lighthearted way about her she makes fun jokes and is slightly clueless about day to day life oh and the men in her life I swear .... yes they seem pretty much perfect !!! And they are all obsessed with her (in a non creepy kind of way) the zombies like thing and world falling apart thing is just creepy enough .. but not too much since I’m not a huge zombie fan but it ended on a crazy cliff hanger that definitely makes you NEED to read book two all I hope is that her pos parents get eaten by a zombie or two .... just saying 😂🤞🏻

This book was a riot. I loved addie!!

“Ryder!” a familiar voice screeched. Dear lord, that voice sounded like a dying bird receiving anal while simultaneously taking a shit.

I seriously laughed out loud most of this book, the main character was just my type of person. I wish i could be friends with her. This book had its dark moments and some action, a few heart string pulls. I enjoyed this book and i cant wait for the next one. I feel like this author is just going to get better n better!!

What did I just read? It felt like the author was grabbing themes out of a bag and stringing together a story: mafia, child abuse, psychological abuse, compound living, reverse harem, apocalypse!

Despite the RIDICULOUS nature of this story, I was entertained.

Addie was quirky and funny. I actually liked her. The boys all fell a little flat by comparison.

I have so many questions. Nothing makes any kind of sense, and I have no idea where the story is going. Since this was a super quick read, I'm going to grab book two to see if there is any sharpening of the storyline.

  • Pamala Hunt

    Loved it!!

Okay so I got this book for free due to the c-19 virus madness. I'm so glad i read this book!! I wasn't sure i was going to like Addie at first, then she met the guys and her personality totally made since, had some lol moments with her inner commentary that becomes talking out loud. I really Loved this book!!

  • Mummy's Naughty Corner

Well I'm on the fence. I'm not feeling the romance and I feel the zombies have left more questions then answered. How did it happen? Was it bad drugs? a virus? it also affects animals as the dog showed that. I liked the cat that was a nice moment. I feel that Addie and her thoughts were funny. I love the fact that she never really knows if she thought them or said then aloud even though it gets her into so much trouble. Her life is really crappy but I feel it's only going to get worse.

I'm about halfway through and I don't know what is going on. Nothing makes sense. The prologue starts with her talking about a friend who died and how she made friends with this boy on the other side of a fence, but the boy doesn't feature in the story at all. In chapter 1, the story starts and it is so disjointed and weird. I know she has been abused and she self-harms. She says the scars and cuts on her arms are her secret, but how can they be that secret if her father strips her and beats her and burns her on a regular basis? Surely he, his business associates, and whichever resort staff happen to be around when he "punishes" her would see those scars, so they can't possibly be a secret.

She says she doesn't socialise with people, she was homeschooled and isolated. But she appears to have the freedom to roam wherever in the resort she wishes to? Plus, it's stated that she has known Calax for years. How would this be possible if she doesn't socialise with anyone? Her father would have gone ballistic if he knew she was talking to a guy, just like he did when he found out that she was hanging out with the boys. And she has had therapy? Why would her parents send her to therapy when they don't care how she feels and what happens to her?

More questions: How did the boys get into her hospital room? Surely she'd have been locked away from prying eyes; her father would have trusted his employees to keep quiet about her, but he wouldn't have wanted anyone else to accidentally walk in and discover what had happened to her. Why doesn't she tell the boys that there would be repercussions if they were to stick around in her hospital room? She doesn't even tell them that the punishment was because she had been sitting with them in the first place. She's not worried about further backlash from her father? And what he might do to all of them, too?

And suddenly Calax has a gun? And then they're inviting her to the slopes with them for skiing and she actually goes? When she could get beat up by her dad again for it? Nothing about this whole scenario makes sense.

I like Addie's quirkiness and right now I'm just reading on because I find her character amusing. But nothing in the story is making sense to me.

UPDATE: Okay, I've finished the book and suddenly we have tornadoes and earthquakes and zombies. I knew there were going to be zombies because it was in the book's blurb, but everything had been so 'normal' up until then that it took me by surprise. And it seems the guys are on some kind of covert mission that involves her parents in some way (hello, cliffhanger!). So they aren't actually high school students? They're 17-year-old spies or some sh*t? (Well, Tam is, at least. The others are older) Who knows...

What I really want to know is how come Addie didn't get infected by the virus or whatever it was when Shannon chomped on her neck?

The revelation about Declan was interesting, I didn't really expect that although I can see that the author had prepared us for it, in a way. But that whole thing also didn't make sense. And we still don't know how she met Calax. She is very clueless about relationships due to having been so sheltered and isolated, although she has watched movies (but still... she can walk all over the resort and talk to staff and guests, how could she really have been that sheltered? -- Still extremely perplexing to me) so she doesn't always know what's appropriate or inappropriate to say in certain social situations, and doesn't understand that when the doorman asks her to go for dinner with him, he's asking her on a date. Hmmm is that likely? If she has watched movies about mean girls, surely she'd also have seen guys ask girls out in those same movies. Again, it all doesn't make much sense.

And yes, she is hilarious but roll around on the floor hilarious? That seemed like an over the top reaction on the boys' part. I've never actually SEEN anyone roll around on the floor laughing. You need to reach a very high level of funny to get that kind of response. It makes the boys' response seem forced, like the author was trying too hard to show how funny she was or how unusual they found her.

I'm going to keep on reading the next book because, like I said, Addie is entertaining and I want some answers. I hope things will start making more sense soon!

Eyy, this is gonna be a rant because I utterly disliked the book.

    Possible spoilers.

Also this book has mentions of possible rape/sexual abuse, depictions of abuse and pretty much torture and severe mental abuse.

This was terrible, what the f*ck, why does it have so many raving reviews?
Am I just not getting it or is everyone insane?

There seems to be a thing with some rh books where the h is fucking certifiable insane/ and or serverly socialy challenged and usually also heavily abused by parents/caretakers.

I don't like this "trope" or whatever you want to call it, since it always feel like a very cheap way to make conflict happen in the book.

The whole zombie angle of this is whack and illogical to the max, the timeframe is strange and doesn't add up for one.

Then we get to the whole abusive parents issue, which seems weirdly glossed over, like okay you profes to love this chickiedee and have found out about the abuse and you tell her you'll keep her safe and then let her get back to her parents??? What!?

Also severe third degree burns don't magically heal themselves nor is it easy to go fucking skiing with them the day after , what's up with that??

I finished it, barely but I struggled through to the end, which btw was a very disappointing cliffhanger.

It also has weird ghostbird( I think that was it) vibes that makes it even more confusing leaving us with a book that wants to be 8 different stories all at once and because of that succeeds at none.

If you're into this kinda books there are definitely some better than this around, ones where the h actually does have some sense of self preservation.
